SOLAR WATER-HEATEP specification of Letters raamt,
Patented Get. 8, itil Application ined July 2, 19de. serali No. 324.505.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
llc it known that I. Ronna'r Sari-ono .\lc.
liv'rvnn, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Riverside. in the lcounty of Riverside. and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Solar lVater-Heaters, of which the following is a specification..
Objects of this invention are to produce at minimum 'cost superior means .for supplying hot Water for domestic and other purposes, andto provide a superior coustrnction of solar heater for heating water.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure l is a view of my solar waterheater ap lied in connection with a common range boi er and heater' for use in a dwelling; a fragment of which is shown in section. Fig. 2 1s a. vertical, axial section of the solar heatingT member of my newlyfinvented heater. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line w3, Fig. 2. Fig. et is a front View of the solar heater member detached.
l designates the wall of a building; 2, a box set aslant against said wall and provided with sheet metal side Walls 3, and an internal sheet-metal reflector et extending aslant, as shown in Fig. 3, to forni a troughlike'bottom for the back wall of the box. The innersurface 5 is polished to serve as alrellector, While the outer surface is adapted tofallow passage of the suns rays into the box throueh the walls 3 and sheet-metal vretiector 4. 6 1s a coiled pipe in said box, the
a hotI Water inlet l0 opening into said boiler and an artificial heater in the form of a .l Water-backll in a stove. 18 is a pipe conmeeting the top of said coil 6 with said hot` vthe snns rays may shine to the haelt oi? the n `wound to give greater or ler-'s surface for g,
mediate. the mouth of said supply and dir- `charge pipes so that thc hot water from either ot' the heaters will readily ttor: into the range boiler. I Gc liv the construction of solar heater shown, v:uperior advantages are seeured; as Vlor instance. the sun`s ays are etl'eetive 'troni earlwsunrise until sunset, havingF access to the coil through both the side walls and the t'ront or top of the box. l`lie upper and lower ends 'li' and 18 ot the box may pret'- erably be made ot' wood, and the top or front 19 of the box may be. in the lorni ot a. pane ot' glass Q0 set in a' frame 2t movable at will to gain access io the coiled pipe t3. dSaid coiled pipe may beof'lan): suitable material; as for instance, tin. iron, or the like, and may be painted red or black for the purpose of absorbing the heat rays of the sun. The individual coils tit ofl said pipe extend oblitpiely relative to the axis ot` said coil so that openings trl are provided between said coils through which and re- .m
eoil and to the reflecting surface 5 atl the hack4 of 'he coil, so that all portions of the coil may he heated.
The coil may be morcor less cloeely the suns rays to inipinge upon.
In practical use, the. pipe 8 will be directly connected with the pressure main, and the water be drawn from the service pipe 9 by the usual valves or faucets, not shown. Arrows alongl the pipes indicate the direction of tiow through the apparatus. y lipes 13, l-L slope upwardly toward the boiler 7 and pipes l5, 16 may slope upwardly from the boiler .so thaty there a continual upward slope through the pipes of the system from the lower part ot the boiler or tank to the hot water inlet. ttl. thus preventing,r any air trapping; within the pipes.
By en'lplolving a f-oil instead ot' a hollow.v cylinder, a simili amount ot' water is caused to circulate in contact with a largrc amount of heating.r .space that is subject to the imping'cment of the direct or reflected suns 015. rays, so that a greater proportion ol the water is immediately acted upon by the heat from the -walls ot the container.
`What l claim is:-
1. lu a water heater, a box adapted be set aslant. against the wall of a imildii and provided with sheet-metal side falriVA an internal sheetgnetal reflector set aslant. to t'orm a trough-like bottom for the bar-k wall of the box, the inner Surface being polished, and a coiled pipe in said box, the
coilsextending aslant, relative to the axie4 of the box and substantially horizontal, and the coils sloping upwardly continuously from the bottoni to the top.
2. ln a solar heater, a slanting box, a refieetor in said box, a coiled pipe, the coils of which are on a horizontal plane, Set in said box with the coils arranged one above another and adapted to admit the rays of the sun to the reflector'.
3. ln a solar heater, a box adapted to be set aslant, against the wall of a building and provided with Sheet-metal side walls; an internal sheet-metal reflector forming a trough-like bottoni for the box, the inner surface being polished; and a heating coil in and extending along the box from the inlet which is at the bottoin'ot the coil upwardly to` the outletat the top of the coil, said inlet leading into the coil at the bottom of the box and the outlet leading from the coil at the top of the box, the members of the coil being so' arranged that the suns rays can readily pass between thern to the reflector.
ln testimony whereof, I have hereunto Set my hand at Riverside California thi" 25th day of June 1906.
