Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September'lZ, 1910. Serial No. 581,502.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that we, OorAvlos E. \VnLLs and Ennonn GHAURETTE, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in planing machines and has for its object the provision of a planing machine of improved construction and 0pc at-ion.
A further objectis the provision of an improved tool holder for planing machines and the like. p
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. l
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a partof this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool holder embodying our invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line wa: of .l ig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawing ccnnprises a supporting bar 1 having a rearwardly bent lower end 2. This bar is designed to be secured in the machine in the usual manner and pivoted to swing from contact with the work during the inoperative movementof the machine. The location of this pivot is indicated by the dottedr-circle 3 in Fig. l and lies in the vertical plane indi- R The lower end 2 of bar it is pl'OVltlWt with a recess {i into which is titted a tool block 5 having a rearwardly inclined tool receiying l'ttfcs's (i therein. A rectangular tool 7 is secured in said recess. Tool 7 projects slightly from recess 6 and is embraced by a yoke 8 carrying a sct-screw t) contacting with the rear of blot-k5 and by means of which said tool maybe readily clamped in the tool,
holder.
It will be observed that the pivotal point of the tool holder lies in front of the cutting edge of the tool so that when the work 10 is applied to said tool any yielding of the tool of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. Vi e, therefore, do not wish to be limited tothe exact details of construction set forth but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as fairly fall within the-scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention what We claim as new and desire to securebyLetters Patent is:
1. A tool holder for planing machines pivoted therein and having its lower end bent rearwardly: and a tool mounted in said tool holder with its cutting edge behind the plane of the tool holder pivot, substantially as described. t
2. In a tool holder the combination of a supporting bar having a recess therein; a. tool block fitting said recess and provided with a 'tool receiving recess; a tool in said tool receiving recess and projectin slightly therefrom; a yoke embracing saicf bar and resting against the projecting side of said tool; and a set-screw threaded in said yoke and bearing against said block on the side opposite to that from which said tool protrudes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this spcciliration in the presenceof two subscribing witnesses.
