To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN L. DENNIS VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. .Application filed May 3, 1911. Serial No. 025,544
and Josnrn IIUNTI'NGTON,"Citizens of the,
llnitedstatea, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia and State of lenusylvania, haveinvented certain new and u.efnl Improvements in Valves, of 'lllrh the following is specification,
The object of our invent-i0nis(to provide a valve of novel, simple and etlieient eonstruotion in which a plug provided with arrow threads is employed in'a ("win provided with 'nn inlet opening and an outlet opening, and inj which the screw threads are so related to said openings that the plug, may be 0 )eratedto open and'elose' the valve and to 0 bet. a tight. joint closing the inlet openin l'Vith' this object. in view, the invention consistsin the novel construction and romhinations of parts which will he hereimrfter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: 'l igme -l is a. vertical section of our improved valve in the closed position and showing the Plug in elevation. Fig. 2- is a similar view 0. open position, showing the plug: in section. and the operating handle broken away. Fig. 3 is a horizontal seotion, on line 3-3 of Pig; 1. ltig..4 is a vertical seetiou, showing a modified forth of the invention;
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 2 desiguateia a cylindrical. easing having a lateral inlet. opening! and a. lateral nut-let opening 5 therein, an'shown'. The lower end of the (was-h1g2 is closed by a bottom wall (3, and the upper end of the casing is elosed by a rap 7 screwed on to the (a -ting.

inlet opening 4 so that one screw-thread will plug 8 from other screw-thread extends around the other side/of the plug], 8 from a position above the inlet opening to a position below the same,
thusnot only closing the inlet opening by when it is In the position, shown in Fig. 1, but also elosin the inlet 0 iening by the engagement 0t the fitl'tl\\'-illltlilll$ 9 and 10 with the screw threada formed in the casing 2. The plug 8 is provided with a transverse op'eniug'or passage way 13, which, when the plug 8 i5 raised to the position shown in'Figf2, is adapted -to register with the openings 4 and 5 to afford comiminieat-ion between the same when the valve is open. The cap 7 forins a stop limitin the upward movement of the plug 8, and t to downward movement; o-lthe plug 8 is limited by the upper or inner portion of the bottom wall (l of the casing.
When the valve is closed the plug 8 is screwed hard against the screw 14 thereby forcing the upper faces of both screwthreads .9 and 10 into close engagement with the opposing faces of the screw-threads formed in the casing 2. This, with the arrangement of the'screw- threads 9 and 10 with'relntion to the inlet opel'ling 4, as pre-' viously explainezhforms ameans 'of efammny closing the inlet opening. In order to balance the plug 8 against a'n pressure llnid that; may enter the top or the bottom of the casing 2, we .provide the plug 8 with vertical openings 15, opening 13.
In the inoditieation, shown in Fig. 4, the easing 2 is provided with an outlet opening H1, in lieu of the outletopening 5, shown in l 'igs. l. 2.:md'3. The outlet opening 16 ex tends from the bottom of the casing 2 and at right angles to the inlet opening 4.- The plug S in the mmlilieation,shown in Fig. 4, is provided with aright angle passageway I? whieh is ada. )tfll to register with the.inlet opening 4- w lll'l the plug 8-.is raised, to a ll'ord eonuuunirat-ion mbetween the inlet opening 4 and the mrtletopening 16. hen the plug S'is lowered. it and the scfrew; threads thereon rlohe the inlet opening, 4, as previrl'usl vdeserihed. \Vhen the plug 8, of the llltfllllltiIi-lnll. is lowered to eloee the valve, the hub ml the hand wheel 12 mlaterally of the' .end of the screw 14 serewed into the central gages the cap 7 and limits the downward mgtherein afl'ording communication lie-t tween said inlet. opening and said outlet opening. when the 0 ning in the plug is in registry with said inlet opening, said easing bein provided with means for limiting thelon mtudinal movement of said plug, two
paralle screw-threads surrounding the plug and engaged with correspondin screw threads .in the casing on each'side 6 said inlet opening, the distance between said screw threads being greater than the diameter 0 said inlet opening, and means operative to turn said plug 2. Ina-valve, the combination ofa cylindrical casing having closed ends and a lat eral outlet opening and a latcral inlet.opening therein, a. cylindrical plug within the casing and having an'o ening therein affording communication hetween said inlet opening and said outlet opening'when the opening in the plu is in reqiitry with said ing on each side of said inlet'openinfiithe i distance between said screw-threads greater than the diameter of said inlet openmg said plug halvingn -Kassie eway therein communicating with bot en 5:01 the casing, and means 0 erative to turn said plug.
