'matrices are stored in channels in a magazine, from which they are discharged for assemblage in the line, by the actuation of key levers. Owing to the frequent occurrence in print of certain letters, such as the letter e, it is customary to employ in the magazine, two or more channels containing the same letter, and to provide means whereby a single key lever may be caused to effect the discharge of the matrices from the different channels. Various mechanisms have been designed for controlling the operative relation of the key lever with the different channels, and in all'such mechanisms as far as I am aware, there is arranged between the key lever and the escapement devices, an actuating device, which by the operation of the key lever effects the actuation of the escapement devices, the operative connection of the .key lever with one or the other of the escapement devices being effected by ashifting or adjustment of the actuating device, the result being that the actuating device will operate the different escapement devices. In the use of such mechanisms, the single actuating device operating the several escapements is subjected to great wear, and to avoid this objection I propose to provide a complete actuating device or mechanism for each escapement or releasing device, and to so arrange the key lever that it may be shifted into operative relation to any ofthe actuating devices to operate the same, the result being that the actuating device for each channel is only operated when matrices are being delivered from its particular channel; whereby the parts are subjected to much less wear than if a single actuating device operated the releasing mechanisms of the different channels.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic cross-section through the key board, showing the connection of the keys to the magazine,Fi'g. 2 is a plan of thechanging-over device, Fig. 3 is a sideelevation of the device from the front, while Figs. 4 and 5 show other positions of the device in elevation.
The magazine is provided for those letters which are frequently used, with two conduits arranged side by side. For connecting the magazine channel escapement devices to the key-board mechanism are used the releasing rods (1 (Fig. 1). These rods are operated by actuating mechanism or devices in the known manner from the keyboard. On a key I) being struck, one of the connecting rods 0 c is moved upward and releases the eccentric wheel or cam (Z which is thus brought into contact with the continuously rotating roller 6 and driven by the latter, the frame f striking the releasing rod a and moving it upward.
The invention consists in arranging one single key lever for the two releasing devices of the two conduits containing the same letter. The drawing shows two sets of releasing or escapement devices for two pairs of such conduits, and consequently there are two key levers 72 which are alternatelyv moved to a slight extent by the shifting device hereinafter more fully described and thus alternately brought into engagement with each one of the two corresponding connecting rods 0 0.
The ends of the key levers, which are to be set, are placed in a frame 9 and reoiprocated by the latter. The movement in one direction is effected by a cam disk It with which the frame 9 engages by means of a roller 70, while a spring 2' has the tendency always to push the frame to the other side. The cam disk 72. which is rotatable about a spindle m, is provided with two teeth 'n. n. Moreover, there is secured to it a disk p rockable about a point 0 and made of such shape that, according to its position, it covers one of the two ratchet teeth a a while leaving the other one free. To a carriage q are secured two pawls r 1" pulled toward each other by means of a spring 8, the points of the said pawls being of such width that they can engage simultaneously with the outer circumference of the cam disk h and of the controlling disk p secured to the same. The carriage q is moved to the right in any desired manner (Fig. 3), each time that a line is completed, by means of a lever t driven from the. main spindle. A spring a brings the said carriage back to its old position as soon as it is released by the lever t.
The working 'of the device is as follows: In the position shown in Fig. 4, the carriage q is in its left-hand position, the cam disk it has been turned to such an extent that the roller 76 is on the reduced position of the same, the two key levers b engage under the connecting rods 0. During the setting, on one of the keys 7) being struck, the matrices will be therefore taken out of that conduit which is cont-rolled by the connecting rod 0. Owing to the movement of the main spindle, taking place after the setting of the line, the lever a will be moved so that the carriage Q will be brought into the position shown in Fig. 5. During that movement the pawl 1" comes into engagement with the tooth n of the cam disk, and rotates the latter to such an extent that the roller 70 of the frame 9, engaging with the circumference of the cam disk, is moved with the frame to the right, and in that way the ends of the key levers b are brought under the connecting rods 0. During further setting, the matrices are taken from the other conduit containing the same character. Under the action of its spring a, the carriage g is brought back to its position shown in Fig. l. During the next stroke, the cam disk is again rotated, owing to the pawl 7" coming into engagement with the tooth n, in the posit-ion shown in Fig. 3, and another changing-over of the key levers into their original position takes place.
The action of the controlling disk 79 is as follows: When the carriage g is moved back after it has brought the cam disk into the position shown in Fig. 8, the two pawls r and 1" are brought nearer together by the spring 8. During that time, they act on the controlling disk 29 and rotate the latter about the point 0 in such manner that the points of the pawls can come as near each other as possible. Fig. 4 shows the position of the pawls or of the controlling disk 29 after the pawls have been moved with the carriage from the position shown in Fig. 3, back to the position shown in Fig. 4. The pawl 1" has during that time fallen into the gap'of the tooth n, so that, during the advance of the carriage q (toward the right), the pawl 1" engages with the tooth a, while the pawl 7" slides along the surface of the controlling disk p and is lifted over the tooth n. The disk 79 cannot be forced back by the pawl 1", as owing to the engagement of the pawl r with the tooth n, the controlling disk is prevented from turning back. When the return movement of the carriage q again takes place from the position shown in Fig. 5, the controlling disk 10 will be again rotated, owing to the two pawls coming nearer together, so that the pawl 9" will be able to engage with the gap of the tooth n, the tooth n being covered. During the next advance of the carriage, the pawl 9" will be again lifted over the said tooth a, while the pawl 1" and the tooth 'n will be in engagement with each other.
From the construction described, it will. be seen that each magazine channel in which the same letters are stored, is provided with a matrix releasing or escapement device operated each by its own actuating device, in the present instance consisting of a rod a, lifting cam (Z, the frame f in which the cam is mounted, and the tripping rod 0, and for these two actuating devices there is a single key lever Z) adapted to be shifted into operative relation with either of the actuating devices to effect their operation alternately. As a result of this construction each actuating device is operated only when matrices are being delivered from its particular magazine; whereby the wear on the actuating devices is much less than if a single device was employed for operating the escapement mechanisms of both magazine channels.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In a typographic machine, the combination of a magazine containing channels for the matrices, a releasing device for each channel, a lifting disk for each releasing device, a continuously rotating roller for operating the same, a key lever shiftable to different positions relative to the lifting disks to control the action ,of either lifting device, and means for controlling the shifting movements of said key lever.
2. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine con taining corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, lifting disks one for each releasing device mounted over a continuously rotating roller and key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character, said key levers being shiftable to different operative positions relative to the lifting disks to alternately operate one or the other releasing devices after the setting of each line, substantially as described.
3. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, lifting disks one for each releasing device mounted over a continuously rotating roller, shiftable key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character and means for shifting said key-levers to different operative positions relative to the taining corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, lifting disks one for each releasing device mounted over a continuously rotating roller, shifting key levers one for each two corresponding magazineconduits containing the same character and means for shifting said key-levers to different operative positions relative to the lifting disks to operate one or the other releasing devices after the setting of each line.
5. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices extending into the conduits, key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character, a frame, in which the said key levers are mounted, said frame being shiftable to different positions relative to the releasing devices and means of adjusting said frame to shift the operative relation of the key-levers to the releasing devices after the setting of each line, substantially as described.
6. In a matrix setting machine, the combination of a magazine provided with conduits to receive the same characters,areleasing device for each conduit, a key-lever shiftable to diflerentoperative positions relative to the releasing devices, a movable frame in which the key-lever is mounted, a rocking cam engaging directly said frame and adapted by its rocking movement to shift the frame back and forth, and means for rocking the cam.
7. Inamatrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, key levers one for each two corresponding magazine conduits containing the same character, a movable frame in which the said key levers are mounted, a cam disk for moving the frame, said cam disk being provided with two teeth and pawls engaging alternately with the teeth of the cam disk thereby producing a rocking motion of the cam disk after the setting of each line.

11. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine contain ing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character, a cam disk adjusting the key levers and being provided with two teeth, pawls engaging with said teeth and a controlling disk alternately covering one of the teeth and releasing the other, substantially as described.
12. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character, a cam disk adjusting the key levers and being provided with two teeth, pawls engaging with said teeth and a controlling disk rotatably mounted on the cam disk and being alternately set as to cover one of the teeth and release the other, substantially as described.
13. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character, a cam disk adjusting the key levers and being provided with two teeth, pawls engaging with said teeth and a controlling disk rotatably mounted on thecam disk, means for controlling the pawls for alternately setting the controlling disk thereby alternately covering one of the teeth and releasing the other, substantially as described.
14. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character, a cam disk adjusting the key levers and being provided with two teeth, pawls engaging with said teeth and being connected together by a spring and a controlling disk rotatably mounted on the cam disk and alternately covering one of the teeth and releasing the other, said spring connected pawls setting the controlling disk alternately according to the position of the cam disk.
15. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character, a cam disk adjusting the key levers and being provided with two teeth, pawls movable back and forth and en'- gaging with said teeth and being connected together by a spring and a controlling disk' rotatably mounted on the cam disk, said spring-connected pawls setting alternately the controlling disk according to the position of the cam during their return movement, said controlling disk thereby covering alternately one of the teeth and releasing the other, substantially as described.
16. In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, key levers one for each two corresponding magazine-conduits containing the same character, a cam disk adjusting the key levers and being provided with two teeth, pawls movable back and forth. and engaging with said teeth and being connected together by a spring and a controlling disk rotatably mounted on the cam disk, said spring connected pawls setting alternately the controlling disk according to the position of the cam during their return movement, said controlling disk thereby covering alternately one of the teeth and releasing the other so that one of the pawls can engage with the corresponding tooth, while the second pawl is carried over the corresponding tooth by the controlling disk, substantially as described.

In a matrix setting and line casting machine in combination a magazine containing corresponding conduits for the matrices, releasing devices, lifting disks one for each releasing device mounted over continuously rotating rollers, key levers one for each two corresponding magazineeonduits containing the same character, said key levers operating one or the other releasing devices, a frame in which the said key levers are mounted, a cam disk adjusting saidframe and being provided with two teeth, pawls engaging alternately with said teeth thereby rocking the cam disk and a controlling disk rotatably mounted on the cam disk set by the pawls and alternately covering one of the teeth and releasing the other so that one of the pawls can engage with the correspond bination with a magazine provided with a plurality of conduits and escapement devices extending into said conduits for dis charging matrices, of actuating devices, one for each escapement device, and a key lever shiftable to different positions relative to the actuating devices to operate any one of the actuating devices.

In a typographic machine, the combination with a magazine provided with a plurality of conduits and escapement devices extending into said conduits for discharging matrices, of actuating devices, one for each escapement device, a key lever shiftable to different positions relative to the actuating devices to operate any one of said actuating devices, and means for shifting said lever.

In a typographic machine, the combination with a magazine provided with a plurality of escapement devices for discharging matrices, of actuating devices, one for each escapement device, a key lever shiftable to different positions relative to the actuating devices to operate any one of said actuating devices, and automatic means for shifting said lever.
22. In a typographic machine, the combination with a magazine provided with a plurality of escapement devices for discharging matrices, of actuating devices, one for each escapement device, a shiftablekey lever movable to different positions relative to the actuating devices and adapted to operate any one of the actuating devices, and connections with a periodically operated part of the machine to automatically shift the key lever so as to operate the different actuating devices. 7
