UNITED STAWENT OFFCE# g GU'sTAvE i1. 'JANTL or WYOMING, OHIoQ cno'rrrns warnena' AND MNGLE.
Be -it known that I,' GUsTAvn H. JAN'rz,
a citizen of theUnited States of America, and a resident. of Vyoming, in' the county of Hamilton and' State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clothes Wringers and Mangles, of
f l Y which thefollowing is a specification.
-This invention relates to clothes wringers and mangles, and it ,has for its object the provision of a quick or instantaneous releasing device for use in connection with f the roll pressure-mechanism whereby the -pressure'is immediately released.A from the rolls should a'ny part of4 the operator or other .object or objects become unduly or accidentally caught between the rolls and otherwise necessitating the backing or re 'verse movement. of said rolls that would only add 4to or augment the injury to said parts or things between the` rolls.
The inventlon herein consists of certain 'novel features of construction and arrangement 'ofan auxilliary'device that is adapted to be applied to the tension or pressure n mechanism connectedl with the squeezing or' mangling rollsfof a clothes wringer or mangle, such as will be' hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed, out in the claims. y
In the accompanying sheet of drawings l Figure 1 isa plan viewvof the device shown in operative position;f,Fig. A2, a -front elevat es-wringer embodying my invention herein, showing 1t as 1t appears 1n p 4operative position ready for the re'leasingf emergency referred to above; Fig. 3, a longitudinalsectional elevation showing the device as it appears when `the tension or 'spring Apressure has lbeen released from the rolls; Figfi, a detail plan view of the releasing-lever showing its cam-formations; and Fig. '5, a fragmentary plan view of the auxiliary latch bolts or bars forming the device' forlocking the pressure mechanism in 'active engagement with the" rolls and kadapted for a quick release by the abovenamed cam-lever when it is desired to throw the pressure oil' said rolls.
In describing saidviews `of the drawings, 1 indicates the lowerroll and 2 the upper lof preventing the spreading of the u vopen ends ofthe Stiles.
roll of the' pair of rolls used .in a clothes Wringer or a mangle, and duly mounted .for rotation in bearings provided. in theupright frame posts or side- Stiles 3 and 4`as cuseach provided with open vertical .slots or; gunde-ways, as customary, forvcontainin' Speciieation of Letters Patent. pPatentedSpt, 2,6, 1911, appucauoamea June 2a, 19'11. seriainnssmoma;
455 vtomary.` The'fsaid side-Stiles 3 4and -4- are y the bearingsand journals of `the rolls 1 an 2 and, also, for containing the vertical s iral springs 5 5, and the opposite .ends o .the horizontal pressure-bar 6,' as best` seen in Fig. 3. y
The open upperends of the fslotted sidestiles 3 and 4 are provided with metal straps 7, the latter being duly secured by horizontal bolts 8 that ltraverse open-bottom slots 9 made in the op osite ends of said pressurebar 6. The sal open-bottom slots 9` permit the ready removal of the ressure-bar 6 when it is'desied. Saidbo ts 8 are provided to secure said straps 7Y in place and4 both said bolts andy straps serve the purpose Per 11, 11 indlcate headed pins whose Shanks internally engage the upper coils ofthe sprin s 5, and 12,'12 are vertical thumb-screws w ose Shanks engage screw-threaded bushings orlinin S13 provided in vertical holes made in sai opposite ends (if the pressure-bar 6 in axial alinement with the springs, the lower ends "of said thumb-screws being brought into contact with the upper surface of the headed pins 11 when it is desired to exert or apply pressure or spring-tension on the upper roll 2 which latter, in turn, is thus brought into close contact with the roll 1 underthe desired pressure for wringing or mangling clothes, as customary.
14 indicates a horizontal slot madein the upper part of each of the metal straps`7.
15, 15 indicate a pair of corresponding horizontal latch-bolts mounted on the upper surface of the pressure-bar 6 and adapted to reciprocate longitudinally upon said upper surface. Each latch-bolt 15 isprovided' with a short longitudinal slot 16 at its outer end and, also, with Vva similar slot .17 about mid-length,as best seen in Figs. l
and 3, the screw-threaded Shanks of the thumb-screws 12 passing downward through feo said slots 16, and vertical screws 18 enterfing said upper surface 'of the.pre'ssurebar Q through said -slots 17 and duly connecting `t he latch-bolts tothe pressure-bar, free tfo slide lengthwise thereover.
Each of the latchbolts' is provided with an upturned'A inner endv19', and the inner ends of both latch-bolts are shouldered or reduced in D Width, as shown at V20,` so thatsaid inner ends can'clear each other inl the reciprocal movement-s 'of said latch-boltsand a suitable Aespace 21 ,(as best seen in Fig. 5)'is pro- 'ded between said shouldered inner ends provide for the downward passage of the At "shanlr'of a vertical' screw 22, the latter, in rn, being provided to secure in horizontal,
I wing'ing position the cam-end 23 of a horizontal lever 24. An intervening washer 25 v "issupplied.' beneath; the cam pOTtOIl 23 0f the lever 24`-to provide a suitable` turning or bearing surface over the spaced inner ends 204v of vlthe latch-bolts 1 5,v as best seen in Fig; 3. The-'lever 24 is curvedor bent upward at 26}so -as to elevate it somewhat above the latch-bolts for clear and positive horizontal movementwhen emergency de-` mands.l The arc'or cam faces 27, 27 of the member 23 of the lever 24-intimately contact with ,the'inner faces of the upright ends y-19 of the"latzhbolts, and, when said lever o 24'is turnedin the direction of the arrow 2 8, seen in Fig. 1, fromv normal position,
said cam-faces'27, 27 -`force the latch-boltsf to Amove toward each other fcentrallypi4 the pressure-bar 6 and cause the outer ends 29 gagelnent with the horizontal slots 14 of the metal -straps 7, such engagement. of the4 latch-bolts with saidy slots 14 being previ# o'usly provided orwhen said latch-,boltsa're' in 'said vnormal position, such as is shown in Figs. 1Y and v2, wherein the wringer vis' in ac tivefposition or condition foruse.v c' In'such actiye condition of the wringer, the'springs 5 are under tension of the, thumb-screws 12,
' and, when said lever 24 is turned in the direction of, the arrow 28 as above'stated, the
'spring-pressure isz'instantly released from 3.,. 50 the rolls'2and 1, especially roll 2, so that any object or fabric that has become unduly or, accidentally entered or cloggedv between lthe rolls, can be readily released or withdrawn withoutturning said rolls backward 55- that would otherwise only injure said 4objects still the more, and especially if such Vobject were the human hand or the like that i Tvgould be, already suiliciently hurt by the rollsv of the wringer or the mangle without i fjsubjecting said part to only additional crushing injury tothe operator.
The operatioiofethe lever 24 is instantaneous, the
' 'passing from locking-engagment with the slots vr 14 ofthe-straps 7 when the cam-faces 27` have exerted their strong pressingforce bolts and the tension of the springs being fully released at once, the expansion 'of such against the'upturned ends19 of `the'latehi` springs forces the ypressure-bar 6 upward and the contacting-pressure vlbetween the. rolls -2 and 1 is immediately withdrawn.
It is (quite obvious that myl emergency spring-pressure or tension device herein can vbe readily applied or added t'o,.a clothes Wringer or' mangle already-infuse, as well as tonew devices of thesame character and,
in order that the opposite 'outer ends of. the
latch-bolts 15 can befdirected toengage the Y horizontal `keeper-slots 14 inf the end-straps 7, it is simply necessary to swing the lever ,24 back to the normal position seen in Fig.
1, the pressure-bar 6 brought int'V activecompressing-engagement with the springs 5 by means of the thumb-screws 12 and latchbolts l5 slid outward by hand lwhen thef outer ends 29 of vsaid latch-bolts register or are in horizontal. `alinement with the said keeper-slots 14y 'Iclaim: v vff 1.'-In a device of the character described,
