citizen of the United States, residin in Brooklyn, Kings county,'and State of ew, York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Sterilizing and Water-Heating Apparatus of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the.

accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

In some municipalities the authorities have prohibited barbers from using hot water that is prepared by heating standing or still water and require that thehot water used in this trade shall in some way be connected with a running water supply or main.

By my present invention I provide simple and economical means for obtaining a running supply of hot ,water, which may be readily drawn 011' for use as desired, and

which device is operatively combined with a sterilizer.

I have illustrated types of my invention in the accompanying'drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front viewof my improved apparatus shown as connected with an ordinary wash stand. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in central vertical section of the steamcompartment and water-heater andheating means, shown as detached. Fig. 3 is an under side view of the steam-compartment and the part. of the water-heater or coil lying beneath the same. Fig. 4 is a crosssectional view of the part of the waterheater or boiler lying within the steam compartment and shown as detached. Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view of the steam compartment with a modified form of water heater within the same. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the T-pipe fitting. Fig. 7 is a central vertical sectional view of the steam compartment with a modified form of water heater.

Referring to the drawings, in which like numbers of. reference designate like parts throughout, 1 indicates a sterilizing compartment having the doors 2 and 3 at the respective ends thereof for the introduction and withdrawal of the articles to be sterilized, such as towels, for example. This sterilizing compartment is in communication with thesubjacent steam-compartment or drum 4, and all of which parts are constructed and operated substantially like the corresponding parts of the a paratus set forth in my U. S. Patent 0. 883,463, granted March 31, 1908, and to which reference may be had in regard to said parts. In this form of sterilizer, the water, indicated a 5, is placed in the steam compartment 4, and heat applied. to generate steamwhich passes upwardly into the sterilizing chamber 1, as set forth in said patent, but as the water 5 is still water its use as hot water for shaving or shampooin purposes in barber shops is prohibited. n my improved apparatus, I combine with this sterilizer av water heater having a running water supply and which fully complies with all sanitary requirements. Beneath the steam compartment or-drum 4, I place a metallic pipe-coil 6, which is connected with a running water supply pipe or city main 7, and also with a p1pe connection 8, which runs to the ordinary wash basin 9, where it is rovided with a drawing ofi' faucet 10, which is operated by hand in the usual way whenever it is desired to draw a quantity of hot Water for the usual, purposes for which it is used in a barber shop.

Within the steam compartment 4, 1s a closed receptacle or boiler 11, which is provided with an inlet and outlet connection 12 and 13, respectively, with the pipe coil 6. The fitting 14, which unites the supply p1pe 7, pipe coil 6, and boiler inlet 12, and l kewise the fitting 15, which connects the boiler outlet 13, the pipe coil 6, and the drawing otf pipe connection 8, being T-shaped so that the water may flow from one connected part to the other and thus thewater may flow 4 through the heating coil and thence out of drawing ofif pipe 8, or it may pass through said coil thence into the boiler or part 11,

and from there to the drawing off pipe 8.

In either case, running hot water 'is supplied to the drawing ofl pipe 8. An ordinary gasburner 16, is placed beneath-the steam-compartment or drum 4 and the pipe-coil 6 in ature of the surrounding Water 5, and so there is a mutual action between the boiler and the steam-compartment in this respect.

InFigs..2 and 4, the boiler or storage receptacle 11, is a horizontal cylinder with the closed ends bowed outwardly.

In Fig. 5 I show the boiler in the form of a vertical cylinder 18, which pro-videsan' annular space of uniform width between itself and the steam drum 4.

In Fig. 7, the inner vessel or boiler is shown in the. form of a pipe-coil 19, instead of a cylinder, and this operates substantially in the manner hereinbefore described in reference to the boiler 11.

The apparatus is mounted on a stand 20,

' at a place-on the floor 22 conveniently near the washstand 9, at which place the run-- ning hot water is constantly supplied by the heater which at the same time is combined with the sterilizer. This combined apparatus has the advantage of simplicity, compactness and comparative cheapness and it presents an attractive appearance and serves to conceal the water heater, which is oftentimes very unsightly. The single burner 16, serves the double function of providing the necessary heat for the sterilizer and the water heater for the running water. Whenever it is desired to empty the water '5, from the steam drum 4 for cleaning the drum, thismay be done by meansof the faucet 21, which is'tapped into the lower end of the drum.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combined sterilizer and water heater and hot water supply, comprising a sterilizing compartment, a steam generator communicating with said compartment and supplying steam thereto, a water heater beneath said generator and a water supply connected with said heater, a reservoir within said generator and connected with said water heater my hand in the presence of and receiving the hot water therefrom, means for heating the water heater and generator, and a pipe connection and faucet for drawing ofl" the hot water from said reservoir as desired, whereby the contents of said reservoir and said enerator may impart their heat to each 0t er.

2. A combined sterilizer and water heater and hot water supply, comprising a sterilizing compartment, a steam generator communicating with said compartment and supplying steani thereto, a heating coil outside of said generator and a water-supply connected therewith, a reservoir within said generator and connected with said heating coil and receiving the hot water therefrom,

a burner for heating said generator and heating coil simultaneously, and a pipe con: nection and faucet for drawing off the hot water from said reservoir as desired, whereby the contents of said reservoir and generator may impart their heat to. each other.
