To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, FREDERICK HOEHN and ALBERT GERDUM, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in fall-Registers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to improvements in wall-registers, and pertains more especially to a hot-air wall-register comprising an upright metal frame adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a laterally discharging flue and having a forwardly discharging opening adapted to communicate with the said flue; a grating arranged at and extending transversely of the said opening and removably attached to the frame; a flap-valve arranged at the rear side of the grating and in position to control the passage of air through the said opening; a lever; means whereby the valve may be swung from its closed into an open position or vice versa, according as the lever is swung in the one or the other direction, and means acting to retain the lever ,in any position into which the lever may have been actuated.
.The p-rimary object of this invention is to provide simple, eilicient` and readily applicable means acting to retain the said lever in any position into which the lever may have been actuated.
Another object is to hold the valve tightly closed against the rear side of the grating in the closed posit-ion of the valve.

Vith these objectsIin view, and to the end of attaining any other advantage hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in certain features of construction, and combinations and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and illust-rated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the upright frame of a wall-register. The frame A is quadrangular` in outline and provided centrally'with an opening a which extends forwardly and rearwardly through the frame. The frame A is provided at its rear side with two rearwardly projecting side flanges A and a rearwardly projecting top flange A2. The side flanges A extend up and down the frame at. opposite sides respectively of and are spaced from the said opening a. The top ange A2 extends between the upper ends of the side langes A and is spaced upwardly from the opening a. The frame A is also provided at its rear side and at each side of the opening a with two vertically spaced lugs A3 which are arranged at the inner side of and spaced from the adjacent side flange A. The frame A is adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a laterally discharging flue B shown only in dotted lines, Fig. 5, and the opening a discharges forwardly and is adapted to communicate with the said flue. The flue B is preferably surrounded by a jacket C, shown only in dotted lines, Fig. 5. Upon reference to Fig. 5 it will be observed that the lugs A3 are arranged to project into the flue B at the inner surfaces of the side walls of the said flue, and the side flanges A and the top flange A2 overlap the jacket C exteriorly. The application of an airconducting flue B and its jacket C, and the application of a wall-register to the said flue and jacket, are too well known in the art to require further illustration and description in this specification. Suffice it to state that the side flanges A, the top flange A2 and the lugs A3 have such relative arrangement that the said lugs and flanges serve as guiding members during the application of our improved register to the said flue and jacket.
The opening a in the frame A is enlarged all around at the forward side of the said frame to receive the rim Z of a grille or grating which is arranged at the front and extends transversely of the said opening a and has its central portion D bulging forwardly. The rim CZ surrounds the forwardly bulging portion D of the grating and is flush at its forward side with the, forward side of t-he frame A.
The frame A is provided at'its rear side and in the bottom of the opening a (see Figs. 5 and 8) with cavities a which are spaced longitudinally of the said bottom, and the aforesaid grating is provided at the lower edge of its rim cZ,-that is, at the bottom and inner side of the grating,-with downwardly projecting lugs Z which are spaced longitudinally of the said edge and engage the aforesaid cavities.
A button E (see Figs. 1, 2 and 3) is arranged at the forward side of the frame A and above the opening a centrally between the side walls of the opening. Thev button E is pivoted, preferably by a screw e, to the frame A, which screw extends from the forward side of the button rearwardly and substantially horizontally and loosely through the button and is screwed into the said frame. The button E has its circumferent-ial edge arranged eccentric to the axis of the button and has such arrangement relative to the grating that the grating is overlapped by the button, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and in solid lines, Fig. l, when the button has been rotated to bring its radially largest portion into position below the axis of the button. It will be Observed therefore that the button E locks the grating in position when the button is in its operative position in which the radially largest portion of the button overlaps the forward side of the adjacent portion of the rim Z of the grating, and that the grating is released 0r unlocked when the said button is in its inoperative position in which its radially smallest portion is below the axis of the button.
By the construction hereinbefore described it will be observed that the engagement of the lugs Z on the rim CZ of the grating with the cavities a formed in the bottom of the opening a holds the grating in position relative to the frame A, that the button E constitutes means whereby the grating may be locked in the said position, and that the grating is rendered free to be removed forwardly from the said frame upon rendering the said button inoperative.
The grating (see Figs. 5 and 6) is provided at the rear side of the upper portion of its rim CZ with two rearwardly projecting lugs Z2 which are arranged near opposite side edges respectively of the grating and adjacent opposite side walls respectively of t-he opening a in the frame, and the said walls are preferably recessed or cut away, as at a2, to enlarge the said opening laterally adjacent the said lugs and thereby accommodate the location of the lugs. Each lug Z2 is provided in the rear side thereof with a recess Z3 which is spaced from the top and bottom of the respective lug and extends substantially horizontally from side to side of the lug. The lugs Z2 have their recesses (Z3 arranged in line endwise.
A pivotally supported damper or flapvalve is arranged to control the passage of air through the opening a and to swing rearwardly in opening and preferably com-A prises a pivotal rod I and a metal sheet I-I. The rod I is arranged substantially hori-A Zontally and transversely of the ope-ning a and extends between the lugs Z2 and into the recesses Z3 of and has bearing in the said lugs. The metal sheet H is bent over the rod I from the forward side to the rear side of the rod so as to embrace the rod, as at ZZ. The metal sheet H therefore constitutes the valve proper and is large enough in dimen-v sions to abut against the rear side of the rim (Z of the grating in the closed position of the valve, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8, and thereby substantially interrupts the passage of air through the said opening.
rIhe grating (see Figs. 5 and 7) is provided at the rear side of the upper portion of its rim CZ with two lugs Z4 and ZJl arranged above the rod-embracing portion Z2, of the metal sheet H and spaced longitudinally of the rod I. Each lug Z4 is provided with a downwardly projecting member Z5 overlapi It will be observed therefore that the lugs d* and their projecting members l5 prevent displacement of the valve rearwardly from the recesses (Z3 engaged by the rod or pivotal member I of the valve.
The upper part of the forwardly bulging portion D of the grating (see Figs. 1, 2, y3 and 4) is provided with a slot D which extends forwardly and rearwardly through the grating and from the upper portion of the rim d of the grating downwardly a suitable distance, and the said forwardlybulging portion of the grating is provided with two rearwardly projecting laterally spaced lugs D2 which are arranged at opposite sides respectively of the said slot. Each lug D2 is provided in the rear end thereof with a recess D3 which extends substantially horizontally through and from side to side of the lug and is arranged between and spaced from the top and bottom of the lug. The recesses D3 in the lugs D2 are arranged in line endwise, and a pivotal pin g, which is arranged substantially horizonally and substantially parallel with the axis of the valve, extends between the said lugs and' engages the said recesses D3 and has bearing in the said lugs. A lever G is mounted on the pin g which forms the fulcrum of the lever.
The lever G extends through the slot D which is long enough to accommodate the location and operation of the lever. The lever G is provided rearwardly of the pivotal pin or fulcrum g with a rearwardly facing surface G which extends circumferentially of and is arranged concentric relative to the said pin or fulcrum but is spaced far enough forwardly of the sweep of the hereinbefore described valve to accommodate the location of a leaf-spring J between the said surface and the forward side of the metal sheet H of the valve when the valve is in its closed position. The sprin J bears forwardly against the surface and extends into a substantially vertically arranged recess d formed in the forward side of the upper portion of the rim cl of the grating and is removably secured to the said rim by a suitably applied bolt L and nut Z. The for-. wardly facing wall of the recess has its lower portion sloping, as at (ZT, forwardly in the direction of the lower or free extremity of the spring and forms a rear abutment for the spring, and the said forwardly sloping portion of the said wall is instrumental in placing the spring under the desired tension.
Means whereby the flap-valve of the register is swung rearwardly into an open position, or forwardly into its closed position,
Vaccording as the lever G is swung in the one or the other direction, are provided and (see Figs. 2, 3 and 4) preferably comprise an angle-plate R which has one wing 12 thereof abutting laterally against the forward side of the upper portion of the metal sheet H of the valve a suitable distance below the axis of the lever and has its other wing 13 projecting forwardly of the valve. The wing 13 forms a forwardly projecting arm of the valve, and the said wing or valve-arm is provided with a slot 14 spaced rearwardly from the forward extremity of the wing or arm and extending from the upper side to the lower side of the wing or arm. The lever G is extended downwardly, as at 15, a suitable distance below the fulcrum of the lever and into and through the slot 14, and the said downwardly extending portion 15 of the lever loosely 'engages the said slot and is long enough to remain in engagement with the slot in any position of the valve. The forwardly facing rear wall of the slot 14 coperates with the depending portion 15 of the lever in actuating the flap-valve, when the latter is in its closed position, rearwardly into an open position during the actuation of the lever in the direction required to swing its said depending portion rearwardly, and the rearwardly facing forward wall of the slot 14 coperates with the said portion of the lever in actuating the flap-valve, when the latter is in an open position, as shown in Fig. 4, forwardly into its closed position during the actuation of the lever in the direction required to swing the said portion of the lever forwardly.
By the construction hereinbefore described it will be observed that the valve of our register is supported from the grating, and in its closed position abuts against the rear side of the rim l of the grating; that the lever G is supported from the grating independently of the valve and arranged forward of the valve in suitable proximity to the axis of the valve; that the valve is swung rearwardly from its closed position into an open position, or vice versa, according as the lever is swung in the one or the other direction; that t-he spring is supported from the grating independently of the lever and independently of the valve in suitable proximity to and above the axis of the lever; that the spring extends to and bears forwardly against the rear side of the lever at a point rearward of the axis of the lever and is instrumental in holding the valve tightly against the rim of the grating in the closed position of the valve; that the grating of the register is loose enough at the upper edge of .its rim relative to the frame A to render the grating, upon having rendered the button E inoperative, free to be removed forwardly from the frame; that the valve, the lever and the spring, being all supported from the grating, are removable with the grating; that the component parts of the register are readily assembled, and that the register is simple and durable in construction and easily kept in a clean condition.
IVhat we claim is 1. In a wall-register, the combination,
with a frame adapt-ed to be placed in front of the discharging end of a flue and having a forwardly discharging opening adapted to communicate with the said flue, and a suitably supported flap-valve arranged to control the passage of air through the said opening and to swing rearwardly to open, of a lever supported independently and forwardly of the valve, means whereby the valve is swung rearwardly from its closed position into an open position, or vice versa, according as the lever is swung in the one or the other direction, and a spring supported independent-ly of the lever and independently of the valve a suitable distance from the axis of the lever and extending to a point rearward of the said axis and there bearing forwardly toward the said axis and against the rear side of the lever.
2. In a wall-register, the combination, with an upright frame adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a laterally discharging flue and having a forwardly discharging opening adapted to coinmunicate with the said flue, and a flapvalve arranged to control the passage of air through the said opening and pivotally supported atl its upper end and arranged to swing rearwardly to open, of a lever arranged forwardly of the upper portion and supported independently of the valve and having its fulcrum substantially parallel with the axis of the valve and spaced downwardly from the said axis, means whereby the valve is swung rearwardly from its closed position into an open position, or vice versa, according as the lever is swung in the one or the other direct-ion, and a spring supported above the fulcrum and independently of the lever and independently of the valve and extending to and bearing forwardly against the rear side of the lever at a po-intrearward of the said fulcrum.
3. In a .wall-register, the combination, with an upright frame adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a laterally discharging flue and having a forwardly discharging opening adapted to communicate with the said Hue, and a Hap-valve arranged to control the passage of air through the said opening and pivotally supported at its upper end and arranged to swing in a vertical plane and rearwardly to open, of a lever arranged forward of the upper portion and supported independently of the valve and having its fulcrum substantially parallel with the axis of the valve and spaced downwardly from the said axis, said lever being provided rearward of its fulcrum with a surface extending circumferentially of the axis of the lever; means whereby the valve is swung rearwardly from its closed position into an open position, 0r vice versa, ac-
cording as the lever is swung in the one or the other direction, and a spring supported above the axis of and independently of the lever and independently of the valve and extending to and bearing forwardly against the aforesaid surface.
V4L. In a wall-register, the combination, with a frame adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a Hue and having a forwardly discharging opening adapted to communicate with the said flue, and a flap-valve pivotally supported in suitable proximity to one of the walls of the said opening and arranged to control the passage of air through the said opening and to swing rearwardly to open, which valve is provided with a forwardly projecting arm which is spaced from the axis of the valve and provided with a slot which extends from the upper side to the lower side of the said arm and is spaced rearwardly from the forward extremity of the arm, of a lever which is arranged forward of the upper portion of and supported independently of the valve and has yits fulcrum substantially parallel with the axis of the valve and arranged intermediate of the said axis and the aforesaid arm, which lever extends to and through the aforesaid slot in the closed position of the valve and is long enough to engage the said slot in any position of the valve, the slot being large enough to accommodate the operation of the lever, and a spring supported independently of the valve and independently of the lever and extending to and between the lever and the valve and bearing forwardly against the lever at a point rearwardly of the fulcrum of the lever.
5. In a wall-register, the combination, with an upright frame adapted t-o be placed in front of the discharging end of a. laterally discharging flue and having a forwardly discharging opening adapted to communicate with the said flue., and a flap-valve pivotally supported in suitable proximity to the top wall of the said opening and arranged to control the passage of air through t-he said opening and to swing rearwardly to open, which valve has its upper portion provided below the axis of the valve with a forwardly project-ing arm which is provided with a slot which extends from the upper side to the lower side of the arm and is spaced rearwardly from the forward extremity of the arm, of a lever which is arranged forward of the upper portion and supported independently of the valve and has its fulcrum substantially parallel with the axis of the valve and arranged intermediate the said axis and t-he aforesaid arm, which lever extends below its fulcrum to and through the aforesaid slot in the closed position of the valve and extends downwardly far enough to engage the said slot in any position of the valve, the slot being large en-ough to accommodate the operation of the lever, and a spring supported abovevand independentlv of the valve and independently of the leverand extending downwardly to and between the lever and the valve and bearing forwardly against the lever at a point rearward of the fulcrum of the lever.
6. In a wall-register, the combination, with an upright frame adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a laterally discharging flue and having a forwardly discharging opening adapted to communicate with the said flue, and a flap-valve pivotally supported in suitable proximity to the top wall of the said opening and arranged to control the passage of air through the said opening and to swing rearwardly to open, which valve has its upper portion provided below the axis of the valve with a forwardly projecting arm which is provided with aslot which extends from the upper side to the lower side of the arm and is spaced rearwardly from the forward extremity of the arm, of a lever which is arranged forward of the upper portion of and supported independently of the valve and has its fulcrum substantially parallel with the axis of the valve and arranged intermediate the said axis and the aforesaid arm, which lever extends below its fulcrum to and through the aforesaid slot in the closed position of the valve and extends downwardly far enough to engage the said slot in any position of the valve, the slot being large enough to accommodate the operation of the lever and the lever being provided rearward of its fulcrum with a surface extending circumferentially of the fulcrum, and a leaf-spring supported above and independently of the valve and independently of the lever and extending downwardly to and between the aforesaid surface and the valve and bearing forwardly against the said surface.
7. In a wall register, an upright frame adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a laterally discharging flue and having a forwardly dischargino` opening adapted to communicate with the said iue; a grating arranged at the front of and extending transversely -of the said opening and provided at its rear side of its upper portion with two rearwardly projecting lugs which are arranged under the t-op wall of the aforesaid opening and near op-posite side edges respectively of the grating, said lugs being each provided in the end thereof with a recess spaced from the top and bottom of the respective lug and extending substantially horizontally from side to slde ofthe lug, the recesses in the lugs being arranged substantially in line endwise; means for removably attaching the grating to the frame; a pivotal rod extending between and into the aforesaid recesses and having bearing in the aforesaid lugs, and a metal sheet bent over the said rod from one side to the other side of the rod, said metal sheet being arranged to control the passa-ge of air through the aforesaid opening, the grating being provided at its rear side with two lugs arranged above the rod-embracing port-ion of the said metal sheet and spaced longitudinally of t-he rod, said lugs being each provided with a downwardly projectlng member overlap ping the said portion of the said metal sheet rearward of the rod.
8. In a wall-register, an upright frame adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a laterally discharging flue and having a forwardly discharging opening adapted to communicate with the said flue; a grating removably attached to the frame and having a forwardly bulging central portion and a rim which engages the aforesaid openingat the front of the opening and is provided in its forward side and centrally between the side walls of the said opening with a recess, which grating is provided in the upper part of its forwardly bulging portion and centrally between the said walls with a slot extending downwardly from the upper portion of the aforesaid rim, said grating at the rear side of the upper part of its forwardly bulging portion having two rearwardly projecting lugs arranged at opposite sides respectively of the aforesaid slot; a flap-valve rearward of and pivotally connected to the grating and arranged to control the passage of air through the aforesaid opening and to swing rearwardly to open; a lever arranged forward of the valve and between and supported from the said lugs, which-lever has its fulcrum substantially parallel with the axis of the valve and extends through the aforesaid slot and is provided rearward of itsl fulcrum with a rearwardlyrfacing surface extending circumferentially of the fulcrum; a leafspring bearing forwardly against the said surface and extending upwardly into the aforesaid recess and removably attached to the grating, and means whereby the valve is actuated from its closed position into an open position, or vice versa, according as the lever is swung'in the one or the other direction.
9. In a wall-register, an upright frame adapted to be placed in front of the discharging end of a laterally discharging flue and having a forwardly discharging openin g adapted to communicate with the said flue, and a grating removably attached to the frame and having a forwardly bulging central portion and a rim which engages the aforesaid opening at the front of the opening and is provided in its forward side and centrally between the side walls of the said opening with'a recess which has the in the one or the other direction.
