SIGNAL-LAMP FOR VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Original application filed December 1, 1910, Serial No. 595,146.
Patented Sept. 19, 1911. Divided and this application filed May 25,
1911. Serial No. 629,429.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, .Anuon M. PU'oKE'rr,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Signal-Lamps tforVchicles; and I do declare the following to be a, full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improven'lents in combined signal and number displaying lanips for vehicles and is a division of my application Serial No. 595,116 filed December l, 1910,1ior a combined signal and sign displaying lamp for vehicles.
The object of the invention is to provide a lamp of this character the casing of which is so arranged that but one light is required for illtnninating the rear and side signals and the sign or number.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more "fully described and"particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l. represenls a rear elevation of a lamp-constructcd in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the/lamp on the line S 3 of Fig. 2.
In lhe embodinumt illustrated a lamp is shown having a. body portion 1 which may be constructed of any suitable material and ol. any desired form being here shown cylini lrical at its upper and lower ends and ol globular 'lorm between its ends. The upper end of the body portion is closed by a hinged top comprising an inner tube 2 having on its upper end a shield or cap 3 which is spaced a slight distance above the upper cnd of the tube and is secured to said end by lugs 4. In the tube near its lower portion is formml a series o'l ventilating passages 5 around which and spaced at suitablev 'distance from the outer side of the inner tube is an outer tube 6, said outer tube having its upper end covered and protected by a cap 7. ()n the lower end ofthe outer tube (3 is secured an annular llange t) which is adapted to lit the upper end ol the body 1 and is hingedly connected thereto to permit the top to he swung back to an open position when desired. At a suitable position on the top is arranged a spring catch 10 whereby the top is held in closed position.
One side of the globular portion of the body 1 is cut out and in the opening thus formed is secured the inner end of =1 sign supporting and display box 11, which may be of any suitable or desired construction, being herein shown triangular in cross section and provided with a suitable view opening 12 and with an opening in its inner end for a purpose to be described;
In one side of the globular portion of the body 1 is arranged a rcarwardly projecting light conducting tube 28, said tub; being disposed innnediatcly below the center 01 the box 11 and having arranged on its rear or outer end an annular head 29 in which is secured a red glass signal lens 30 through which atred light is displayed at the rear of the vehicle. On another side of the body portion 1 and in the same horizontal plane as the tube 28 is a laterally projecting light coiuilucting tube 31 arranged at right angles to the tube 28. This tube 31 is provided on its outer end with a head 32 in which is secured a green glass lens 33 for the side signal light.
Detachably secured to the lower end of the body portion 1 of the lamp is a lamp socket or receptacle 3t which may be of any suitable or desired form and in which is arranged a lamp 40 of any desired construction.
In the body portion 1 behind the flame ol the lamp 40 is arranged a reflector to which together with the polished innersurlace o't the sign display box 11 throws the light of the lamp 40 through the signal tubes 38 and 31 and on the sign in the box '1 l, the light passing through the open rear or inner end of the box 11.
Any suitable means may be provided for supporting the lamp in position on the rear ol. a vehicle a socket, 45 being herein shown For this purpose.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying draw-' lugs, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood wilhout requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages 'of the invention as defined in the upa body, holding box having a reflector an open side disposed opposite said refleclO tor, and light conducting from the body at right angles tubes extending to each other and arranged in the same horizontal plane, said tubes being disposed below said box and one of tliem arranged opposite said reflector.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALMOR M. PUCKE'IT. Vvitnesses J. O. HALE, R. A. STONE.
