8140c n l'o a affoznu match boxes and one of the objects with one of the ends of the box having UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT J. JOHNSTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MATCH-BOX.
' Application filed March 21,
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l. l'hinnn'r ll. Jonxs'rox, a citizen of the United States, residingat. (,hicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented new and usclul. improvements in Match lioxes, ot which the following is a spcciticatimi.
This invention relates to improvements in of the invention is to provide a match box having;- separate compartmeats, one of the said compartments being); adapted for the reception of the matches, a cap or closure connected means whereby only a single match may be delivered, and a closure for the opposite end of the box being t'ormed with a, connecting; element whereby the ends may be severed 'lr'om the ends of cigars and the cuttings from theends of the cigars received within the second compartment.
Other objects and advantages'ot' the dcviec will be pointed out in the following specification.
In the drawings aceompanyine this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of a match box constructed in accordance with the present invention, the caps or closures of the box being in their open position, and a single match being delivered to one of the closures. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the match box proper. This box comprises a substantially rectangular casing having opposite open ends.
'lhe numerals J and 3 designate hinged caps or closures for the open ends of the box. ()ne of these caps, 23, is provided with a cutting element l. and the side of the box is t'ornnal \vith'an opening 5, the'same being arranged within the path of the cutting element el when the cap 3 is closed. The opening 5 is adapted to receive the ends of cigars, and the element t is provided to sever the said ends.
' The receptacle 1 is formed with an clined partition 6, the latter extendingthe entire length and terminating adjacent the opposite upper and lower walls of the said box. This partition divides the box into a pair of compartments which are designated respec- Spccification of Letters Patent.

lively by the munerals 7 and 8. The compartmcnt T is adapted to receive the cuttings from the cigars which are severed by the element :l. aml the compartment 8 is adapted to receive the matches t). The upper t'aee ot the box or casing is cut away longitndi nall v a suitable distance and the side walls provided by the said cut away portion are t ormed with grooves t), the said grooves being adapted to receive the longituctiia v arranged tongues 10 formed upon the side edges ol a slide 1.1. The opening in the top ot the box is adapted to serve as an entrance for the matches. when the same are to be deposited within the compartment 8. The slide it has its opposite ends provided with a suitable catch t2. the latter adapted to be received within depressions or grooves l3 :l'ornn-d in the walls provided by the grooves. The spring catch 12 serves as means for retaining" the slide it upon the box, and the said slide has its free end formed with a suitable linger hold it whereby the same may be readily slid from the opening.
The numeral 15 designates an inclined plate which is connected with the sides of the box or casing 1. This plate terminates at the end of the box or easing having the cap or closure 2, and the said terminal is arranged only a slight distance above the terminal ot the-inclined partition 6. Both the ends of the plate .l5 and the partition 6, adjacent the opening normally closed by the cap 2 are provided with longitudinally extending slitted or cut away portions 16 and 17 respectively, and the said cut away portions are adapted to provide a path through which curved fingers 18 formed upon the cap may play. 'lhespace at the ends ot the plate and the partition is stillicient to receive only a single match, and when the cap 2 is opened as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings the curved lingers thereot'passing through the recesses or cut. away portions 16 and 1.7 engage this match and deposit it upon the cap or closure 2. The plate 15 is preferably. constructed of some spring material, and the end thereof is adapted toyield slightly when the match is delivered by the curved fingers 18 upon the cap or closure. it is to be understood, however, that the tension of the resilient plate isnot sufficient to force the match into a sutlicient. frictional contact. between the partitihn and the said plate to cause the ignition of the match.
Having thus fully described the said invention, what I claim is being provided with a spring catch, the said closure being further provided with curved fingers whlch pro ect within the mouth of the box when the closure is swung upon its hinges to close the said mouth, a partition within the casing, said partition having its ends provided with depressions arranged within the path of the inclined ends of the fingers of the closure, a resilient plate within the box, said plate being inclined from the top of the box'toward the end of the partition, the said plate having its free end provided with depressions adapted to overlie he depressions of the partition and to serve as a way for the fingers upon the closure when the said closure is swung in open position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT J. JOHNSTON.
