SHOE-LAST.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 16, 1910. Serial No. 567,223.
I To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ennnsr W. DURKE'E, subject of the King of England, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoe lasts of the hinge type and has for its object the provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly eflicient device of this character, the construct-ion of which is such as to admit of a Wide range of lift of the pivoted heel section and thus prevent damage to a shoe when positioning the last within or removing said last from the shoe.
A further object is to provide a novel form of hinge for connecting the heel and toe sections of the last, said hinge being so constructed as to retain the last sections in alinement with each other when under pressure.
A further object is to form the movable hinge section with laterally extending flanges which engage the heel sect-ion and not only serve to reinforce and strengthen said hinge section, but also assist in anchoring the same on the heel section of the last.
A further object is to provide means for preventing lateral movement of the heel section with respect to the toe section, and means bearing against the flanges of the movable hinge section for preventing undue strain thereon.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices, so as to increase theirrutility, durability and efficiency, as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved shoe last forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises pivotally united members 5 and 6, one of which constitutes the fore part or toe section of the last and the other the heel section. The inner faces of the sections 5 and 6 are disposed in parallel relation for a portion of their height, the upper portion of the toe section 5 being concaved at 7 and the upper portion of the heel section 6 being formed with a convexed face 8 so as to admit of a wide range of lift of the heel section 6 and prevent injury or damage to a shoe when positioning the last in or removing said last from the shoe.
The hinge forming the pivotal connection between the heel and toe sections comprises mating members 9 and 10, the member 9 being preferably in the form of a fiat plate, one end of which is substantially rectangular in shape and seated in a correspondingly shaped recess 11 formed in the toe section 5, said plate being retained within the recess by spaced transverse pins or rivets 12. The mating member 10 of the hinge is preferably in the form of a casting having a vertically disposed socket 13 formed therein and provided at its upper edge with laterally extending fianges 14 which engage the heel section 6 and not only serve to reinforce and strengthen the member 10, but also serve to anchor the casting on said heel section. The forward end of the plate 9 is inclined downwardly to produce a tongue 15, which enters the socket 13 and is retained therein by a transverse pivot pin or bolt 16. The reduced end of the tongue 15 is provided with a flat vertically disposed shoulder 17. which latter bears against the rear wall of the socket 13 and serves to retain the sections of the last in alinement with each other when under pressure. The heel section 6 is pierced by a transverse pin or bolt 18 which bears against the flanges 14.- and assists in taking the strain off the movable hinge section or casting 10.
It will here be noted that the pivot pin 16 is spaced inwardly from the inner face of the heel section 6 and is entirely housed within the latter so as to permit free tilting movement of the heel section with respect to the toe section without binding or wedging action between the parts.
While the hinge is shown in connection with a shoe last, it will of course be understood that the same may be used with equally good results for forming a pivotal connection between any two bodies, and that if desired, the anchoring flanges of the socket member may be omitted, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A shoe last including pivotally united heel and toe sections, the inner port-ion of one of which is provided with a concaved face and the other with a conveXed face, a casting seated in the heel section and having its upper edge extended laterally to form angular flanges, said east-ing being provided with a socket, a plate secured to the toe section and having a reduced tongue entering the socket in the casting, a pivot bolt piercing the heel section and casting and engaging the tongue and a reinforcing pin extending transversely through the heel section and bearing against said flanges.
2. A shoe last including pivotally united heel and toe sections, a. casting seated in one of said sections and provided with a socket, a tongue secured to the other section and extended within the socket, the upper longitudinal edge of said tongue being inclined downwardly and the terminal thereof provided with a stop shoulder adapted to bear against the adjacent wall of the socket for retaining the last sections in alineinent when under pressure, and a pivot pin extending transversely through the socket and adjacentend of the tongue.
