IMPRVEMENT INDooR-sPRrNGs. l
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making part of the sama.
To all whom it may concern Be it, known that I, BENJAMIN G. Frrznuumof the city and county of Frederick, and Stute ot' Moryinnd, have invented a, new and useful improv-ement; v in Door-Springs; and I do hereby declare the t'ollowing to be n full und correct description of the suine, sutiicient to enable others skilled inthe class to which my invention nppertains to fully understmld the suine, reference being had to the ucconnmnying drawings which make part of this specification, und in which- Figure l is a frontelevntion ot' n door with my iinproved ,spring uttiched, the spring holdingthe door shut.
yFigure 2 is a similar view, part oi' thefrmne being broken away, with the spring zulnnged` to hold the door open;
Figure 3 is a top view of tig. 1; and l Figure 4 is a detached View of thepiece holding the lower square end ofthe spline.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in thc serernl figures. A
rlhe. nature of my invention consists in udoorspring consisting of n bent wire rod passing with its lower squnredend through u square openingr in u' Kpiarte secured to the door-post; or trame, while its upper end, bent at rightfangles, or nem-1y so, to the lower part ofthe rod, passes through n loop secured in the upper patri: 'ot' the door, the spring ot' the rod, or the force with which it keeps the door eithcr opeir or shut, being obtainedby pressing its bent part under a. hook Secured in proper position on the doorpo'st or frame. f
1n the drawings-L w A represents the frnn'le, to which the door. it is hinged. f
(in the lowcr part, of frame A is secured n plate, C, shown detached in Ii". 4, in which two square openings, c, are formed, 'one being turned un eighth ot'a revolution from the other, so that in placing thcA .lower end of the spring-rod D -alternutely intovone und the other opening, c, it, will be shii'tcd eight times during one complete revolution ot the rod. The
lower end-of this lutter is tonde square, so as to fit' into the openings c of pinte C, while its upper partv e is heut at right angles, or iurarly-so, to 'the lower parl; d. y n v j Thus, when thel part d ispluccd into one ot' the openings c, the part e will ext-end across the door.
A loop, b, secured in aJ suitnble position on door A, tllrougbwliich Athe end ot' puri; c posses freely to und fr0 as the door is opened nul shut.
The end ot port e mayI be provided with nerollcr, und' a, met-al plate may bc secured on the door on which the end e is to more; but thcsc nrc unesscntinl iig. 3. y
This end, c, is' then passed through loop b, and the to my invention.
Secured in :i proper posit-ion on the frame. A relatively to the plate C and loop b is :L hook, a, under which the bent part or bend of spring-rod Dis pressed otter the part d hns been placed in one of the openf ings o and the part e` passed through loopl b.
lhe operationv 4of my nnproifcd-v door-spring is very l,
simple and cnsilyV understood.
he rod l) can be mudo of wire and its square snrt consist oi' n piece of iron .welded on,'os a'wire end squared off would weer out, too soon by reason ot' its` softness.
The Squnrc end ot` the spring-rod is placed through one ot' the openings c, iu l such n manner that purte points toward the door, as shown in dot-ted lines in bond of the rod pressed under hook. a. l
ljvipnissiiig the bend under the hookspriug is given to the rod .l), itscnd e pressing against the door; :1nd
when the latter is opened, the t'orce of th'c spring is increased, -by reason oi the twisting ot' rod 1), through its part, c, and the force isa'gain diminished asthe door is' shutif it is desired to give more tbrceto the spring, the rod is removed from under hook a., und from loop b, :ind the sqnure ond-shifted from oneopcning, c, to
thc otherin the direction ot' the force required, ul'ter which the part c und hond oron'opluced in loop i; und" under hook a.
It will bereiulily uiulcrst'ood, thatJ by placing.; the square end ot' rod l) in unopening, c, so that pzirt c, points away from the door, the notion oilthc spring is reversed, und is unido to keep thc door. open.
is its ,-,grcat simplicity, enabling any one to nttuch, chungo, and shift it'- wit-hout rcipiirinfjr the aid oi'n mechanic; un increase or dccreupe inthe force of the spring being eiiccted without vthe use oictools or devices, which are liable to get out ot' order, by merely shifting the lower end oi the rod` in thc openings c, or froin'onc to the other. 5
Another great. advantage is its cheupncss. Should the square end ot' the rod wein' oii` its edges n new rod canbe supplied for n less euurthan its repair would cost, and the 'other parts, it' out of order or broken, can hc replnccd in thc suino wuy. i
Ii'n rod dior-spring, as now known und in neig, o'r :miv part of the saine, break, :ill the ports hare to be rcpiiced with a new rod.
Hering: thus described my invention, Y What l. claim is new, und dcsiw to scr-nrc by Leti l. 'ihc plate for holding thc Ysipnn'c. end of rod l), when provided with two saluer-e openings., c, which :uc pinccxgin ouch postionto euch other that. whentira rodi) is shiftesl from om; is im@ @that au eighth The 'above specification of my improvement in revolution is given to the rnd, subsmntiaiiy as and oo1--spiings signed this 28th day of December, 1869. for the purposes described. 4 i i B.
