Be it known that we, Euro ANDERSON and Gnonon B. THOMAS, both citizens of the United States of America, and residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shade- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to shade holders and particularly to shade holders adapted to be secured to electric lamp sockets or the like, our object being to provide improved means for securing the holder to the lamp socket or other support on which the holder is mounted.

In the accompanying drawings, F igure 1 is a vertical section of our improved shade holder in one form mounted upon a lamp socket of common form; Fig. 2 is a vertical section at right angles thereto, of the holder detached; Fig. 3 is a plan of the holder; Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the split gripping flange with the locking ring above the same; and Fig. 5 is a brokel'ivertical section through a holder having the gripping flange integral with the body of the holder.

Referring to the drawings the shade holder comprises an annular body portion 10 in the skirt of which the shade or globe engaging means are carried, here comprising a spring wire 11, with actuating finger loops 12 passing through slots 13 in the skirt, and a sustaining guide loop M, all of well known construction and operation. The particular shade supporting means employed form no part of our invention and may be of any desired character.

Our invention resides in the means employed for securing the holder to its supportfor example, to an electric lamp socket. I11 the example shown, the socket 15 is provided near its lamp receiving end, with the usual bead 16. A flange 17 rigid with the shade holder body is vertically slotted to form spring fingers 18 adapted to grip the bead 16 on the socket and for this purpose curved in part to the contour of said bead. The diameter of this flange is less than that of the bead 16 but slightly greater than that of the socket end, so that the holder may be pushed onto the socket and the fingers 18 sprung over the bead 16 while the lower edge of the flange abuts against the lower face of the head. grip upon the bead which is taken by the spring fingers 18 is not sufficiently strong in and of itself, to alford a secure means of mounting the shade holder on the socket, and we therefore provide a locking ring 19 which is of such internal diameter that on the one hand it may be passed freely over the bead 16 before the holder is adjusted, but on the other hand, is so narrow that it engages the outer faces of the spring fingers 18 when it is drawn down by the clamping screws 20 carried by the flange 17 and working in threaded perforations 21 in the ring 19. As the ring is drawn down by the clamping screws, it forces the spring fingers 18 against the bead as an abutment and the bead is thus not only clamped between the ring 19 above and the flange 1.7 below, by the action of the screws 20, but the spring fingers cannot escape from the bead and the holder is thus locked in position It is advantageous to employ a ring 18 of somewhat heavier metal than is desirable in the holder body which is spun to shape, since not only is a su'tlicient thread surface for the screws 20 thereby afforded, but the clamping strain is thereby distributed equally around the head 16 and the spring fingers 18 all pressed in against the head with equal force. To aid the locking or wedge action of the ring, the inner face 24L of the latter is preferably beveled. The outer edge of the ring rests upon the slight annular offset 22 in the upper face of the shade holder body. Inasmuch as this offset is relatively rigid, it serves as a fulcrum, as it were, and the ring as a lever or wedge acting at its inner edge against the spring fingers 18, the force being applied to the lever ring through the screws 20 and tending to force these spring fingers against the bead 1(5 and thus lock them in engagement therewith.

While we prefer to form the flange 17 separate from the body 10 of the holder, and secure them together by means of rivets 23, since this gives a more rigid abutment for the heads of the screws 20, it is obviously readily formed in one with the body 10 and spun to shape as shown in the modified form, Fig. 5.

As a matter of convenience it is highly desirable to have the ring 19 permanently attached to the body of the shade holder and this is accomplished by making the screws 20 of sufiicient length to hold the ring above the'upper edge of the spring fingers, and peening over the ends of the screws, so that they cannot be screwed out of the ring. This materially facilitates the adjustment of the holder, since it may then be slipped up over the end of the socket, the ring preceding the spring fingers and as soon as the latter have snapped over the bead, the ring may be drawn down by the screws. It will be observed also that these screws are accessible from the interior of the fixture and thus are readily reached even when the holder is employed in connection with husks.

Various other modifications in which our invention is embodied will readily suggest themselves.

We claim as our invention 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shade holder having a support-gripping flange, of a locking ring and means carried by the shade holder and accessible from the interior thereof for drawing said ring down upon the gripping flange to lock the latter upon its support.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shade holder having a gripping flange comprising spring fingers to engage, a supporting bead, of a locking ring and means carried by the shade holder and accessible from the interior thereof for drawing said ring down upon said spring fingers to lock the latter upon the supporting bead.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shade holder body having offset therefrom a support gripping flange, of a locking ring and means carried by the shade holder and accessible from the interior thereof for drawing said ring down between said body and the gripping flange to lock the latter in engagement with its support.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shade holder body having a support gripping spring flange, of a locking member and means for drawing down said locking member between said body and spring flange to lock the latter in engagement with its support.

5. In a device of the character described,

the combination with a shade holder body havlng a support gripping sprlng flange, of a locking member and means for drawing down said locking member with a wedge action between said body and spring flange to lock the latter in engagement with its support.

6. A shade holder having a shouldered body portion and a support gripping flange in combination with a displaceable locking means adapted to be moved into locking position between said flange and the shoulder on said body portion, and screw means carried by said body portion and engaging said locking member to move the same into and out of locking position.

7. A shade holder having a body portion with support engaging flange, a displaceable locking member carried by said body member and means accessible from the interior of the holder for moving said member into looking relation to said engaging flange after the latter has gripped its support.

8. A shade holder having a support gripping flange, a locking ring and abutment therefor in combination with screws carried by said body member and engaging said ring to move the latter into and out of locking position between its abutment and gripping flange, substantially as described.

9. A shade holder having a body portion, a support gripping flange and a locking member, in combination with retracting means carried by said body member and engaging said flange to hold the locking member out of engagement with said gripping flange during the adjustment of said holder in its support and to retract said member into-locking engagement with said gripping flange after the latter has been adjusted upon its support, substantially as described.

10. A shade holder having a support gripping flange, a locking member to engage the same and lock it upon the support, and screw means carried by the shade holder for holding said locking member out of engagement with the flange during the adjustment of the holder upon its support and then draw ing it into engagement with the flange to lock the latter in its adjusted position.
