SWING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE D. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Swing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a new and improved swing, of a type in which the oscillating motion of the swing traverses the support for the swing over the ground.

An object of this invention is to provide asupport for a swing rotatably supported on suitable rollers, with means for driving one or more of said rollers by the swinging action of said swing, so that the device as a whole will move over the ground, and if desired, about a common pivotal point.

A further object of this invention is to provide a swing suspended on a support, which may be connected to rollers on the support, so as to traverse the device as a whole, along the ground, or which may be operatively disconnected from said rollers, so that the swing may be moved while the device as a whole remains stationary on the ground.

These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a side view in elevation; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail View of the swing and its carriage, taken in section; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 44 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 55 of Fig. 4.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, 1 indicates a suitable support for a swing 2. This support 1 may be of any suitable form, but preferably is in the form of a carriage provided with suitable rollers or wheels 3 and 23, whereby it may be rotatably mounted on the ground. The latter of these wheels 23 is a drive wheel, as will be explained hereinafter, and supports one end of the frame of Specification of Letters Patent.

the support 1 on the ground, and is adapted to traverse the support along the ground.

The swing 2 is oseillatingly supported on the support 1 .in any suitable manner, as by being suspended by means of hangers 4 from cross bars 5, mounted on suitable braced uprights 6 on the support 1. The hangers 4 lever 12, which projects downwardly a sufficient distance, so as to be within reach of the occupants of the swing, and is pivoted intermediate its ends, as at 13.

The link 10 is pivotally connected at its opposite end to a lever 14, which is pivoted at 15 to a bracket 16 mounted on the support 1. This lever 14, which may be termed an operating lever, is provided with rack bars 17 and 18, which are pivotally connected to the lever 14, and are held in engagement with gear wheels 19 and 20 on an axle 21., in

any suitable manner, as by means of roller guides 22. The axle 21 has mounted thereon a driving wheel 23, which rests on the ground and forms the support for the rear end of the carriage 1. Secured to the wheel 23, on each side thereof, there are provided ratchet wheels 24, which are engaged by pawls 25 pivotally connected to the gears 19 and 20, so that when these gears are alternately rotated by the oscillating movement of the lever 14, the roller or wheel 23 will be continuously rotated.

The swing 2 may be of any suitable character, such as a foot-rest 2G pivotally connected to the hangers 4, and chair members 27 opposed to each other and pivotally connected to the hangers 4 and the foot-rest 26. If desired, the device may be permitted to run freely on the ground, but it is preferred that it be tied to some supported point, so as to limit its scope of travel. For this purpose, there may be provided a fixed post 28 of any suitable character and secured to the ground in any suitable manner. This post is provided with a stub shaft 29, on which is rotatably mounted a radius rod 30, to which the carriage and swing thereon is connected in any suitable manner.

The operation of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. One or more persons can sit in the chairs 27, and if it is desired to traverse the device along the ground, the link 10 is looked to the swing by means of the locking pin 11, and any back-andforth oscillating motion of the swing due to the movement of the occupants thereof, will be transferred through the link 10 and the lever 14., to the driving wheel 23, so that a continuous rotating motion of this wheel may be effected, thereby driving the carriage and the swing thereon along the ground. Inasmuch as the swing and carriage are tied to the post 28, the device will rotate in the manner of a merrygo-round, about its fixed anchor. Allowance may be made for the circular motion by any suitable known manner of connecting the wheels to the supports.

If it is desired to use the device merely as a swing, and not to move over the ground, the lever 12 may be manipulated so as to draw the locking pin 11 out of connection with the link 10; thus any movement of the swing will be free and inde pendent of the link 10, and the device will remain stationary, with the swing oscillating to and fro.

While I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination with a support, of a swing connected to said support so as to be capable of swinging to and fro, driving means operated by said swing, for traversing said support over the ground, an anchor, and a connection between said anchor and said support, whereby the direction of travel of said support is controlled.

2. The combination with a support, of a swing connected to said support so as to be capable of swinging to and fro, driving means operated by said swing, for traversing said support over the ground, an anchor, and a radius rod rotatably mounted on said anchor and connected to said support, whereby said support is constrained to travel in the path of a circle.

3. The combination with a carriage having rollers for supporting said carriage on the ground, of a swing mounted on said carriage so as to oscillate to and fro, and driving connections between said swing and one of'said rollers, whereby the movement of said swing to and fro will drive said last-mentioned roller and traverse said carriage over theground.

5. The combination with a carriage having rollers for supporting said carriage on the ground, of a swing mounted on said carriage so as to oscillate to and fro, driving connections between said swing and one of said rollers, whereby the movement of said swing to and fro will drive said last mentioned roller and traverse said carriage over the ground, and means for constraining the travel of said carriage in a predetermined path.

6. The combination with a carriage having rollers thereon, of a swing mounted on said carriage so as to oscillate to and fro, said swing having a foot-rest and chairs, whereby occupants of said swing may manipulate said swing to and fro, an operating lever having a driving connection with one, of said rollers, adapted to drive said last-mentioned roller so as to traverse said carriage over the ground, and a link connecting said operating lever with said swing, whereby the movement of said occupants of said swing will be transmitted to said last-mentioned roller, so as to traverse said carriage over the ground.

7. The combination with a carriage having rollers thereon, of a' swing mounted on said carriage so as to oscillate to and fro, said swing having a foot-rest and chairs, whereby occupants of said swing may manipulate said swing to and fro, an operating lever having a driving connection with one of said rollers, adapted to drive said last-mentioned roller so as to traverse said carriage over the ground, a link connecting said operating lever with said swing, whereby the movement of said occupants of said swing will be transmitted to said last-mentioned roller, so as to traverse said carriage over the ground, and means for operatively connecting and disconnecting said link with said swing.

8. The combination with a carriage having rollers thereon, of a swing mounted on said carriage so as to oscillate to and fro, said swing having a foot-rest and chairs, whereby occupants of said swing may manipulate said swing to and fro, an operat-' ing lever having a driving connection with one of said rollers, adapted to drive said last-mentioned roller so as to traverse said carriage over the ground, a link connecting said operating lever with said swing, whereby the movement of the occupants of said swing will be transmitted to said last-mentioned roller, so as to traverse said carriage over the ground, a post, and a radius rod rotatably mounted on said post and connected to said carriage, adapted to constrain said carriage to travel in the path of a circle.

9. The combination with a support of a swing movably mounted on said support and comprising a plurality of relatively movable parts, a wheel on said support adapted to engage the ground, and driving connections between said swing and said wheel, whereby a relative movement of the parts of said swing, to oscillate said swing to and fro, will rotate said wheel to move said support along the ground.

10. The combination with a support, of a drive wheel on said support, a swing pivotally mounted on said support, said swing comprising a foot-rest and chairs, movable relative to each other, the movement of said foot-rest and said chairs relative to each other being adapted to oscillate said swing, and driving connections between said swing and said wheel whereby the relative movement of said foot-rest and said chairs will rotate said wheel.

11. The combination with a support, of a drive wheel on said support, a swing pivotally mounted on said support, said swing comprising a foot-rest and chairs, movable relative to each other, the movement of said foot-rest and said chairs relative to each other being adapted to oscillate said swing, driving connections between said swing and said wheel, whereby the relative movement of said foot-rest and said chairs will rotate said wheel, an anchor for said support, and a connection between said anchor and said support, whereby the direction of movement of said support, due to the rotation of said wheel on the ground, will be controlled.

12. The combination with a carriage having driving wheels thereon so as to becapable of moving over the ground, of a swing connected to said carriage so as to be capable of swinging back and forth, driving connections between said swing and said wheels, whereby said wheels can be driven by the motion of said swing, so that said carriage may be traversed along the ground, and means for connecting and disconnecting said swing with said driving connections so as to selectively connect said swing in driving relation with said wheels or disconnect said swing so that said swing can swing freelyto and fro while said carriage remains stationary.

13. The combination with a carriage hav ing driving wheels thereon so as to be capable of moving over the ground, of a swing connected to said carriage so as to be capable of swinging back and forth, driving connections between said swing and said wheels, whereby said wheels can be driven by the motion of said swing, so that said carriage may be traversed along the ground, and means for connecting and disconnecting said swing with said driving connections so as to selectively connect said swing in driving relation with said wheels or disconnect said swing, so that said swing can swing freely to and fro while said carriage remains stationary, said means embodying a locking pin and a lever for operating said locking pin.
