Ll'o all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ANToNrLAsKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinge- Butts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinge butts and the objects of my improvement are to produce a hinge butt that is made up of two leaves that are united in such a way as to be non-separable when the door to which the same is applied is closed and which is provided withmeans that prevent the separation of the leaves when the door is open, and which feature permits of the use of my hinge butt with the joint for the two leaves exposed and on the outside of the building and without danger to the security of the building- Other objects will appear from a consideration of the details of construction.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved hinge butt. Fig. 2 is a reverse view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the hue w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one ofv the bearing members. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is abottom view of the same. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 3 y of Fig. 3.
A is a hinge butt comprising a pair of leaves respectively a left leaf B and a right leaf 0, united by a hinge connection inaccordance with my invention. The said leaves B and C comprise each a leaf proper '10 of the usual plate like form suitable for being secured to the dooror casingprovided with screw holes 11, and along one edge provided with knuckles to be described. The said left leaf B comprises a single elongated knuckle 12 which is a fit for the space between the pair of knuckles 13 that are provided for the right leaf C. The said intermediate knuckle 12 on the left leaf B is generally solid, and has at the ends a socket or bed 14, which may be semi-spherical as shown or of some other formation suitable for receiving a ball D. The said end knuckle 13 on the right leaf 0 is exteriorly of the same size as the intermediate knuckle 12, and cylindrical in shape, and interiorly is Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 2, 1911.

provided with an axial bore 15 which is of a d an'lcter such as to admit the said ball D, and the outer end of which bore 15 is provided with a screw thread 16. The said so provided with a radial threaded hole 17 for a set screw E, and which is preferably located inwardly from the said screw threaded portion 16 of the bore 15. A cylindrical bearing member G that is fitted to the said bore 15, has the outer end 18 generally flat and provided with'a pair of depressions 19 leaving between them a able for a handle for manipulating the said bearing member G, and at the inner end'is provided wit-h a bearing socket or bed 21, which is the counterpart of the said bed 14 and suitable to cooperate therewith to operatively house the said ball D. The length of the said bearing member G may be such that the said outer end 18 will abut against a holding screw H engaged with the said thread 16 and be held thereby in proper position to operatively house the said ball D as described. A radial socket or recess 22 may be provided that registers with the radial slot screw hole 17 and is suitable for receiving the end of said holding or end screw H comprises a screw threaded body 23 which is fitted to CTICUT, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ONE-FOURTH TO BERNARD central bridge 20 that is suitthe said set screw E. The
the said screw threaded outer end 16 of the bore 15 and is of length suflic-ient to abut against the said bearing member G as described, and is provided with an overhanging head 24, which may be ornamental as shown, and has the annular shoulder 25 suitable for engaging with the outer end 26 of the said outer knuckle 13, and thereby positively limit the position of the bearing member in the bore 15.
In assembling my hinge butt the leaves and O are brought into position such that the intermediate knuckle 12 is located be- 1 tween the end knuckles 13 and in axial alinement therewith and is' dropped through the upper bed 14. After this has been done, the said upper ball D will operate to hold the leaves B and 0 together so as to facilitate the other operations in assembling. The upper bearing member G may next be inserted in the bore 15, and the set screw E then the upper ball D screwed into the socket 22 provided'there the upper bore 15 into' erati'on' the operations described are reversed. The assembly of the lower member of the hinge joint corresponds to that of 40 vent the lateral separation of the hinge 18 of, the bearing memberG. The,bridge described, particularly in regard to the feaball D and the lower bearing member G ing screw H. It Will be noted that the 10- .limiting feature described in regard to the my hinge for and whichpperates to properly position? the said bearing member G. Theupper holding screw H is next inserted in the up- Her threaded end 16, and screwed home, the
ange 25 abutting against the upper end 26 of the upper knuckle '13 and the inner end 27 in abutment with the opposed outer end 20 facilitates placing the said bearing member G in proper position in the operations ture of the registration of the socket or re; cess 17 and the set screw E, and the said* bridge also facilitates the removal of the said upper bearing member G, in which opthe upper member in the arrangement of the elements and final positioning of the same, though the manipulation of the said elements is essentially different from the fact that the several parts are raised in bringing them home,\and that the lower must be held in their proper positions until the bearing member G is positively held by eitherthe set screw E or the lower holda members B and C, and on account of the removal of the set screws E, my hinge members are non-separable in all positions ex cept the open position, and ofcourse are non-separable in the closed position. Therefore it is possible to installmy hinge. butt] in position and with the joint, or knuckle members exposed on the outside of the building, and without danger to the security of'the building. On this account buildings, and with the knuckles exposed as described, so as to permit the doors to open butt is suitable for use on public outward, a feature-that is desirable and generally insisted upon in regardto suchbuildlngs. T
I claim as my inventio'n:-
I 1. In a hinge comprising a pair of hinge members havmg knuckles pivotally united by balls operative as pintles and having means for removing the said balls, a set.
screw operative to permit such removal, and. means for covering the said set screw and to prevent such removal and separatlon of the hinge members when the said hinge members are in ,the closed position.
2. A hinge comprisin an intermediate knuckle and a pair of en knuckles, the said intermediate knuckle havin a bed for a ball at each end, the said en knuckles each provided with an axial bore, a bearing member fitting said bore, and provided at one end with a bed suitable for cooperating with the said first bed for operatively housing a ball, and means for retaining the said bearing member in the said bore. I
- 3. A hinge member comprisin an intermediate knuckle and a pair of en knuckles,
a bed for a ball provided at each'end of the said intermediate knuckle, thesaid end knuckles having each an axial bore, and having a thread at the outer end, a bearin member fitting the said 'bore and housed therein, and a holding screw enga ed with the said thread and holding the sai bearing member in the said bore.
4. A hinge member comprising a air of matingleaves, each of the said leaves a-ving a leaf proper, an intermediate knuckle member ,integral with one, and a pair of end knuckle members integral with the other of the said leaves proper, the said intermediate knuckle comprising a bed for a ball at each end, the said end knuckles having an axial bore, and having a thread at the outer end thereof, a bearing member housed within the said axial bore, and having a bed at the inner end, a holding screw engaged with the thread and operative to hold the said bearing memberlongitudinally in the said bore, a ball operat-ively housed between each end of the said intermediate knuckle and an end knuckle and in the said beds, and a set screw enetrating the lateral wall of the said end knuckles and engaged" with the said bearing member.
