Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN TUOI-IY, OF BLACK DIAMOND, CALIFORNIA.
j FLASK-BAR.
4 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TUOHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Black Diamond, in the c'ounty of Contra Costa, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flask- Bars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in metal casting molds and particularly to the molding` flasks used for the cope of the mold the object of the invention being to produce a new and improved means for securing the flask bars in the flask. As it is a well known fact under the present method of applying these flask bars the same are secured in position by means of bolts and nuts which require a considerable time to insert and apply and which are not conveniently removed when desired especially for the purpose of shaking the mold or for loosening1 the flask bars to permit the sand in the flask to conform to the shrinkage of the mold as it cools.
My improved method and structure is designed to do away with the bolts or nuts and still provide a means for fastening the flask bars in fixed position in an effective manner and yet permit the fastening means to be readily and quickly removed for any purpose without the necessity of any nuts or bolts.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of refcrence indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a flask and the flask bars held in position by my improved structure. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the flask bars. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a modified form of the bottom edge of the flask bar. Fig. 4 is a Specification of letters Patent.

plan view of one of my improved iiask bar fastening keys.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings 1 designates the flask which is of the usual or any desired structure of metal or wood.
The numeral 2 designates the flask bars which are provided with the usual holes 3 to receive the sand for the purpose of aiding in the holding the same in the flask. At each end and on each side of the bars 2 when using my improved structure, I provide a plurality of grooves 4 which taper in depth from their inner to their outer ends.
The sides of the flask 1 are provided with a plurality of oval or oblong shaped slots 5 which are the same as are used when the bars 2 are bolted to the flask.
The numeral 6 designates a fastening key which is substantially staple shaped being formed with projecting finger members 7 which taper on their inner sides from the inner to the outer ends as at an the body of the key being provided with an orifice as at 8.
In practice the bars 2 are placed in any desired position in alinementwith the slots 5 and then the keys 6 are projected through said slots and the finger members 7 projected over the bar 2 at one of the sets of grooves 4. In view of the fact that the grooves 4 are tapered and the inner sides of the finger members 7 are tapered, said finger members 7 and said bar 2 are wedged closely together by reason of the keys 6 being closely in the slots 5 and hence the bars and corresponding parts are held securely in fixed position ready for use. `When, however, it is desired to move the bars 2 in any position, all that is necessary to be done is to tap the member 6 until they become loosened when they can be readily removed from the outside of the flask without the necessity of disturbing the sand as would be the case if bolts and nuts were used. Also, as can be readily seen the operation of removing or inserting the bars in any position would be much more readily and quickly done by the use of my improved structure rather than with the use of bolts or nuts. Another feature obtained by means of my improved structure is that the bars 2 may be adjusted at any desired height by reason of the plurality of end grooves 4 which permit the bars to be secured in a plurality of positions as will be readily seen.
If the casting is made from hot metal and it is left to cool, the keys 6 may be readily taken from the flask permitting the bars 2 and sand to conform to and compensate for the shrinkage in the metal as it cools.
The comparative cost between the use of my improved structure and that of nuts and bolts is also much less by the use of my improved device as Will be seen Without the necessity of entering into any further discussion of the same.
lThe central orifice 8 in the keys 6 is provided to receive a bar or key in order to pull the keys 6 from locked posit-ion.
From the foregoing description it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set fort-h herein.
While this specification Sets, forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, Still; in practice such deviations from such det-ail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a molding flask, flask bars adapted to fit therein, and a staple shaped key adapted to project through the sides of said. flask and engage said bars to hold them in any desiredfixed posi-tion as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising` a molding flask, flask bars adapted to fit therein, said flask bars being provided with a plurality of'l grooves on each side of either end, and keys adapted to project through the sides of said flask and engage said bars in said grooves as described.
`3. A device of the character described comprising a molding flask, flask bars adapted to fit therein, said flask bars having a plurality of grooves on each side of each end, and keys having a pair of projecting finger members adapted to project through the sides of said flask and engage said bars in said grooves as described.
et. A device of the character described comprising a molding flask, flask bars adapted to fit therein, said flask being provided with oblong slots in its sides, and locking keys having projecting finger members adapted to project through said slots on each side of said bars as described.
5. A device of the character described comprising a molding flask, flask bars adapted to fit therein, said flask having a plurality of oblong slots in its sides, keys adapted to project through said slots and engage said bars, said keys comprising a body member and a pair of projecting finger members, said finger members being tapered von their inner sides from the inner to the outer end thereof as described.
6. A device of the character described comprising a molding flask, flask bars adapted to fit therein, and a split key adapted to project through the sides of said flask and engage said bars holding them in any desired fixed position as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of t-Wo Witnesses.
JOHN TUOHY.
