Description

Cllniirli tapes aient @lilium WILLIAM ALTICK,
or DAYToN, onto.
Letters Patent No. 100,349rdated March 1, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, WILLIAMALTICK, rol Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new' and useful Improvements in Portable or Parlor Fountains, for odorizing, deodorizing, 85o.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my improved device;
gigure 2 is a vertical central section of the same; an y n Figure 3 is a plan view of the lower end of the jetpipe.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention belongs to al class ot devices lhaving for its object the production of a jet ,of Water or other duid by mechanical means; and
It consists in the general constructionand arrangement'of the several parts ofthe device, as hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawing- A represents a rod, secured vertically within a suitable base, B, and having upon its upper end a piston, C, provided upon its periphery with a groove, c, for the reception of hemp or otherbrous packing.
D represents a metal cylinder, corresponding in inside diameter with the outside of the pistou G, over: which 1t is placed, and its lower end being open and provided with a guide, E, secured 'to said cylinder, and working upon the rod A, while its upper end is closed by means of' aA basin, F, to the bottom of which said cylinder is attached by means of screws, f, passing downward through said basin into a flange, d, secured to said cylinder.
Secured to and extending upward from the center of the basin F is a short pipe, G, provided at its center' with a stop-cock, g, and at its upper end with a small basin, H, from the center or" which projects upward a small`nozzle or jet-pipe, I.
Two or more openings, x, are provided iu the bottom of the basin F, through which communication maybe had with the interior of the cylinder for the purpose l of admitting water thereto, which wateris afterw: rd
prevented from escaping through said opening by means of leather iiaps or valves, k, extending inward fi'om and forming a part of the gasket K, placed between the cylinder and basin, each valve closing upward against one of the openings.
As thus constructed, if the basin F be lled with water and the cylinder raised up on the rod A, the water-will be drawn through the openings x into the space between the piston and the upper end of the cylinder until said space is filled, when, upon releasing said cylinder, its weight, together with that of the basin, will create a pressure upon said water, which, being prevented from escaping through said openings, will pass upward through the pipe G and nozzle I with suiiicient force to form a fine jet.
A wire-gauze diaphragm, i, is placed over the lower end of the pipe G, for the purpose of preventing the admission thereto of any substance having a suliicient size to cause it to obstruct the nozzle.
The stop-cock g is used for the purpose of regulating the low ofthe water, and also to prevent air from entering the cylinder when the saine is raised.
In order that all annoyance from the leakage of water through the piston may he avoided, a drip-cu p, L, is placed around the rod A, immediately above the base B, into which said water falls and is retained.
In fountains above a certain size it would be i'nconvenient aswell as difficult to raise the cylinder for the purpose of charging the same, unless some especial means were provided for the purpose of assisting the operator. f
To accomplish this object an arm, M, issecured between the base and drip-cup, and from thence curves' outward andY upward, and has pi voted within its upper end a pulley, m.
Projecting horizontally outward from the arm M,
just above the drip-cup, is astud, m', upon which is pivotcd another pulley, N, having'secured thereto a crank, n.
A cord, O, is secured at one end to the pu'lley N, and from thence passes over the. pulley m, and has its other end attached to one ofthe arms ofthe guide E, so that by turning said crank the cord is wound thereon, thereby causing the cylinder to be readily elevated to the desired height.
The 'exterior ot' this fountain being highly ornamented will make it an attractive and pleasing addition to any center-table, in addition to which it may be usefully employed for odorizing, deodorizing, or dis'- infecting the atmosphere of a room, by adapting the liquid contained therein to the especial purpose 'designed; and as its parts are few and not liable to become deranged, and the whole can be furnished at a comparatively small cost, it is believed that general use will follow its introduction to the public.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention,
That I claim as new, and Letters Patent, is-
The cylinder D, provided with the guide E and connected to the basin F, in combination with the rodA and piston C, substantially as and for the purpose specited.
Also, the combination of the cylinder D, the btsin desire to secure by cylinder Ythe purpose specified.
F, the openings and the valves k, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
Also, the pipe Gr, covered at its lower end with the diaphragm z and provided with the stop-cock g, in combination with the basin H and the nozzle I, substantially as herein specitied, and for the purpose described.
Also, piston C, and
in combination with the rod A,
and for D, the drip-cup L, substantially' as the cylinconsisting and Also, the means employed for elevating der for the purpose of charging the same, of the arm M, the pulleys m and N, the crank n, the cord O, substantially as herein set forth.
the combination of the rod A, the piston C,
provided with the open G, provided with the Witnesses:
Taos. D. MITCHELL, J oHN COLLINS.
