My invention relates to rotary retarding mechanism for adding machines and like devices.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective structure which is certain in operation.

Considering the numbered parts ofthe drawing, l-is a portion of the frame 0t an adding machine, to which is secured a. plate 2 by suitable screws 3 extending into shouldered pins 4, which support the same in spaced relation from the said frame plate. 1. A balance wheel 5, preferably formed 'of sheet metal, with a \ireight 6 therein, is carried on a suitable pin 8, which is provided lug. II] is am with journals 7--7 at each end,ras clearly appears in Figs. I and III. The periphery of said wheel is smooth and cylindrical to cooperate with a brake shoe. An internal clutch drum or member 9 is journaled on the pin 8 and is reduced in diameter, tapering, at 9 and is provided on its outer end with a pinion 10, which is secured thereto by a'suitable square hole or other means, or may be fol-med integral. A spiral coil clutch spring 11 embraces the internal drum 9, and is secured to pin 12 near the center of wheel by an eye 13. The opposite end of the spring 11 is bent inwardly at 14 and contacts with the reduced portion 9' of the clutch drum 9 at that point. It will be observed therefore, that'the pinion 10 with the clutclrmember 9 comparatively free to r0- tate inone direction against slight friction,
but when the-direction is reversed, owing to the gripping action of the point 14 of the spring 11, the. same will be clutched and the pinion 10 will be rigidly con led to the balance wheel 5. The clutch rum 9 is preferably reduced in diameter at 9 to minimize,
the friction as only slight. action is required on the direct stroke of the sector. ()n the return stroke of the sector positive and substantially instantaneous coupling is" reqnircd. V
The. driving sector 15 of the adding machine is pivoted .at 16. and provided with gear teeth 17 which mesh with the pinion 10. This sector is held in and returned to normal position by the spring 18 attached thereto. Abrake shoe 19, preferably faced with ieather, is carried-by the sector and disposed to contact with the periphery of the balance wheel 5, when. the machine is at rest. as clearly appears in Fig. I. p
The relations of the various parts of my device being now clearly understood l will point. out that in operation the sector is pivoted to reciprocate, and, being in mesh with the pinion 10, will drive the same in either direction. When the sector teeth 17 swing upwardly. as illustrated in Fig. I, the clutch docs notfact and comparatively free motion against the tension of spring-18 is secured, there being only sntficient. When the sector is releas have ever, an'dpermitted to return to the normal position, as the spring 18 acts upon the sector to return it, the sector immediately 110 overthrow does not act meets the resistance of the balance wheel 6, owing to the action of the clutch, and in that spring is resisted and an easy action is secured. The clutch acts-because this motion tends to wind the sprin 11, and the opposite motion tends to re ease it. When the spring 18 returns the sector to the normal position, it is stopped by the brake shoe 1O contacting with the peri hery of the balance wheel 5. This causes the balance wheel to stop and prevents'any violent blow due to the action of the spri 18. Any slight tendency-ofthe weights brake wheel 5 to upon'the sector to cause undue strain, because this motion is in the direction which releases the clutch. It will therefore be seen that a ver effective action is secured. Also the slig t friction of the spring when the clutch is released and the parts are comparatively free,
. aside from taking up allslack at the mo 1 mentof reverse, also reacts on the sector to assist the sector sfpring in the eflective re-' turn at the end 0 the stroke, owing to the method of the balance wheel, and seats the brake'with a gentle action avoiding all jar or rebound. I have shown a most efiective and simple means for accomplishing this result. I therefore desire to claim the structure I have produced in its 5 ecific form on account of its superiority and also desire to claim the same broadly, as I have indicated in the appended claims. I
Havin thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a rotary braking device for regulat:
ing the action'of adding machines, the com- 4 bination of a reciprocatin driving means, having a toothed perip cry; a balance wheel on a suitably journaled pin: a clutching' drum 10 with pinion revolubly mounted on said balance wheel pin the portion of 4 said drum next the inion being of reduced diameter; a coiled c utch spring ada ted to fit said clutching drum snugly at t e end adjacent said pinion, and loosely at its opposite end toward the'balance wheel, and connected to said balance wheel; and a brake carried by said reciprocatory driving means and disposed to act on the peri hery of said balance wheel, when in normal position cooperating substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. In a rotary braking device for regulating the act-ion of adding machines, the combination of a reci rocating driving means, having a toothed periphery; a balance wheel on a suitably 'ournaled pin; a clutchmg drum 10 with pinion revoluhl mounted on said balance wheel pin; a coiled clutch spring adapted to fit said clutching drum snugly at t e end adjacent said pinion, and
loosely at its opposite end towardthe halway the return action of the clutching spring upon said drum one end of which ance wheel, and connected to said balance wheel; and a brake carried by said reciprocator drivin means and dis osed to act on t e perip cry of said he ance wheel, when innormal position cooperating substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
3.. In a rotary braking device for regulating the action of adding machines the combination of a balance wheel secured to a journaled pin; a clutchingdrum loosely mounted on said pin, one end of which is of less diameter than the other; a clutching coil spring upon said clutching drum one end of which is adapted to fit said drum snugly at the smallest diameter of the latter; connec tions between the opposite end of said spring and said balance wheel; and a pinion adapted to rot-ate and drive said drum in both directions, substantially as described. 5
4. In a rotary braking device for regulating the action ofadding machines the combination of a balance wheel secured. to a journaled pin; a clutching drum loosely mounted on said pin; a clutching coil spring upon said clutching drum one end of which spring is adapted to fit said drum snugly at one end; connections between the opposite 'end of said spring and said balance wheel;
and a pinion adapted to rotate and drive said drum in both directions, substantially as described. 1
5. In a rotary braking device for regulating the action of adding machines the combination of a rotary member mounted in suitable hearings; or clutchin drum freely mounted concentric with said rotary mem her; a clutching spring upon said drum one end of which is attached to said rotary member and means said drum in both directions. 6. In a'control device for regulating the action of adding machines having a rotary member, a clutching means, comprising a drum free to rotate in one direction independently ofsaid rotary member, one portion of which drum being of smaller diameter than the other; a 5 ring coiled upon said drum adapted to fit t e same snugly at the point of the smallest diamete of the latter; and connection between said rspring and said rotary member, substantially as described.
7. In a control device for regulating the action .of adding machines having a ro-, tary member, a clutchin means comprising a drum free to rotate in one direction independently of said rotary member; a

9. In a bra ing device for regulating the action of addin machines, the combination to return said sector; a balance wheel; a retatable clutch member actuated by said sector; and a clutch member carried by said balance wheel and in frictional contact with the said rotatable clutch member to positively couple and drive the balance wheel on g the return movement of said sector, roasting for tho pnrposc specified.
