TELESCOPIC PIPE-JOINT.-

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. COLE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Auburndale. in the county of Middlesex and State of'Massaehusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Telescopic Pipe-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to telescopic pipejoints.
The objects of the invention are to provide a joint which permits variation in the length and rotary movement of the parts connected; which is so constructed that it does not require frequent repacking to keep it steam and water-tight and which is provided with flexible means for maintaining the movable member in an, outward position.
The following is a description of the invention, reference bein made to. the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of the invention; Fig.2 is a Vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the closed end; Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view on line 44 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is an end view looking toward the movable member. 7
In the drawin illustrating the preferred embodiment of t e invention 1 represents a socket-member having an interior cylindrical chamber 2 closed at one end by a cap 3 provided with a thread 4 adapted to screw into the threaded end of the socket-member 1. A suitable annular gasket 5 interposed.
situated on the side of the socket-member 1 as shown in the drawings, or onthe end in place of the cap 3.- The other end of the socket-member 1 is provided with a circular opening of less diameter than the diameter of the chamber 2 thereby forming an inthe open end of the said socket-member.
The threaded end of the pipe-section 10 may be either male or female'as occasion demands. As shown in Fig. 2 of the draw- 1ng s,.- the shoulder 12 fits closely within the cylindrical chamber 2 and the pipe-section likewise makes a close fit with the flange 7. The section 10 is free to be rotated or moved endwise within the cylindrical chamber of the socket-member. To secureatight oint between the socket-member and the pipe-section packing-rings 15 are arranged between the two adjacent to the shoulder 12 and a helical spring 16 within the chamber 2 having one end abutting the cap 3 and the other abutting the packing 15 serves the double purpose of keeping the packing tight against the shoulder 12 and the pipe-section 10 in a forward position with the shoulder 12 against the flange 7. If desired, in cases where there is little weight on the pipesection and little rotary movement thereof, packing-rings may be used between the shoulder 12 and the flange 7 in addition to or even in substitution of the packing shown in the drawings. Such use, however; is impracticable where the pipe-section is subjected to any degree of rotary movement since that movement, especially if the pipesection supports any weight, grinds away the packing in a very short time and requires such frequent repacking as to be of little practical value.
w The inner end of the pipe-sectionlO has four angular cuts 17 arranged on the inner surface to receive a square-headed tool to prevent rotary movement of the same when a pipe is being screwed onto the threaded end 11 or to turn the same to make the connectionif it is impossible or diflicult to turn the pipe to be so connected.
In the use of the joint, one of the pipes to be connected is screwed into the connection 6 or if that pipe is fixed the joint may be turned to make the connection. The cap 3 is removed and a square-headed 'tool is inserted in the angular cuts 17 on the inner end of the pipe-section 10 and the latter may then be connected to the other pipe either by turning the pipe-section or the pipe. If the latter method is used the square-headed tool is employed to 'hold the p1pe-section'10 stationary while the connection is being made. When the joint is inplace,
properly connected the cap 3 is readjusted It is to be observed that this construction permits a veryffree rotary movement of the pipe-section and its connections as well as an endwise or horizontal movement of considerable extent and any sudden movement of the pipe 'sect-ion is taken up by the helical spring and thereby prevents the joint being in ured} Another advantage of this construction is that it .is unnecessary when installing new packing to cut' the rings. In a pipe joint, the combination of a chambered socket member having an inwardly extending'flange at one end, a pipe section longitudinally movable therein through sai flanged end, packing at the inner end of said pipe section, and a spring within the socket member bearing against E.
