RAILROAD-FROG'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONNOR C. CHAix/IBERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad- Frogs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in frogs used in railroad construction and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of improved construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Vlith these objects in view my invention consists in a railroad frog characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a railroad frog embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail section taken on substantially line oc-az of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken on line y-f/ of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of my construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a metallic block 1 which is preferably of the peripheral form shown, said block being poured about the adjacent ends of rails 2. The latter may be of any ordinary construction or design, that illustrated being a conventional grooved rail; said rails projecting from said block any suitable distance for connection with adjacent rail sections of the track. The block 1 is shown formed solid but it is understood that if desired the same may be cored to reduce the weight thereof. Formed in the upper side of the block 1 are grooves 3 which register as shown with the grooves formed in the upper sides of said rails 2. Also formed in the upper side of the block 1 centrally therein is a recess 4 preferably rectangular in outlin-e and comparatively shallow. Arranged in the recess e is a wear-plate 5, the same being of such dimensions and of such formation as to be adapted to be snugly received in said recess; the construction being such however that removal of said wear- Speccation of Letters Patent.

plate in order to effect renewal thereof may be readily effected. Said wear-plate is formed of a suitable hardened metal and is provided in its upper side with grooves 3 which register with the grooves 3 in the block 1. Formed at the periphery of the wear-plate 5 preferably at each side thereof is a downwardly and outwardy projecting finger 6; the fingers 6 engaging slots 7 formed for the reception thereof in the adjacent portions of t-he block 1. The slots 7, as will be observed, open laterally as well as upwardly, wedge members 8 being inserted therein into engagement with the upper sides of the fingers 6. Said wedge members 8 are formed with inclined shoulders 9 adjacent their upper ends, said shoulders 9 engaging against correspondingly formed surfaces of said slots so that when said wedges are driven inwardly the same will be forced downwardly against the fingers 6 to securely fasten the plate 5 in position. Thus the latter is detachably secured in operative position in the block. The wedge members 9 are locked in position by means of wedge members 10 which are inserted into slots 11 provid-ed in the eX- teriorly projecting outer ends of the fingers 6, said wedge members 1() abutting against the outer ends of the wedge members 8 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Cotter pins 12 removably arranged in the lower ends of the wedge members 10 for engagement against the under sides of the projections 6 serve to lock said wedge members 10 against accidental displacement.
With a construction as set forth then, it will beobserved that the wear-plate 5 is secured in the block 1 in such a manner as to be adapted to be readily and expeditiously removed and upon the same becoming worn or otherwise disabled another plate of similar design may be readily and quickly arranged in its place. The construction is such that the plate 5 may at all times be rigidly secured in position, provision being made to effect this purpose by reason of the peculiar construction of the wedge members 8. If it is desired to elevate the wear-plate, a sheet or plate of metal may be arranged thereunder upon the bottom of the recess 4. In removing the wear-plate the wedge members 10 after removal of the cotter pins 12 are rst withdrawn. The wedge members 8 are then removed whereupon removal of the plate 5 may be readily and quickly effect'ed by tapping upon the eXteriorly projecting ends of the fingers 6.
A railroad frog of the construction set forth is durable and economical, and through its provision an intersection may be renewed without necessitating the renewal of the entire frog, renewal of the intersection being effected economically and expeditiously in the manner above described.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable o'f variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the source of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a. railroad frog, the combination of a base block having wheel flange grooves and a central recess formed in the upper side thereof; a wear-plate arranged in said recess and having grooves in its upper side regisf tering with the grooves in said base block;
downwardly and outwardly projecting iingers provided at the periphery of said wearplate engaging slots in the adjacent portions of said block; and wedge members adapted to be driven into said slots into engagement with the upper sides of said lingers for removably securing said wearplate in position in said recess, substantially as described.
2. In a railroad frog, the combination of a base block having wheel flange grooves and a central comparatively shallow recess formed in the upper side thereof; a wear-plate arranged in said recess and having grooves in its upper side registering with the grooves in said base block; outwardly extending projections formed upon said plate at the periphery thereof engaging slots formed for the reception thereof in the adjacent portions of said base block; and wedge members adapted to be moved horizontally into engagement with said slots to engage against the upper sides of said projections for removably securing said wearplate in position in said recess, substantially as described.
3. In a railroad frog, the combination of a base block having wheel flange grooves and a central comparatively shallow recess formed in the upper side thereof; a wearplate arranged in said.recess and having grooves in its upper side registering with the grooves in said base block; a plurality ofoutwardly extending projections formed upon said plate at the periphery thereof engaging slo-ts formed for the reception of said projections in the adj aeent portions of said block; wedge members adapted to be moved horizontally inwardly into engagement with said slots to engage against the upward sides of said projections, inward movement of said wedge members effecting depression of said projections; and means for locking said wedge members in ope 1ative position, substantially as described.
