JACK-SCREW.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES H. I/VRIGI-rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wayne, in the county of Wayne and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jack-Screws, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to jacks and more particularly to jack screws for lifting buildings and other heavy objects.

The object of the invention is the provision of means for guiding the upper end of the screw and for protecting the building or other object being lifted from injury.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a lifting foot which may be utilized as a base for the screw when necessary.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the application thereof. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view.

Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 represents a base or support which is provided with a raised boss 2 formed therein having a socket 3 formed in the boss adapted to receive the ball head i of the jack-screw 5 which is threaded throughout its length as is usual and is provided with the customary turning head 6 having apertures 7 therein for receiving a hand spike or the like, not shown. Threaded upon the screw 5 is a lifting foot 8 having lateral extensions 9 adapted to engage underneath the building or other object to be lifted and said foot is hollowed out as at 10 as shown to accommodate the boss 2. An inwardly and downwardly extending recess 11 is formed in one side of the foot member 8 and is adapted to receive the inwardly and downwardly extending toe 12 formed on the protecting strip 13 which is adapted to extend vertically and parallel with the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,

screw 5 above the head 6. This strip lies alongside of the building or other article being lifted and is engaged by a friction roller 14 which is carried in a supplemental head 15 journaled upon the reduced end 16 of the screw 5. This head is flat upon the top and is adapted to be placed beneath articles to be lifted in the ordinary manner when the foot 8 is used as a base. The roller 4 operated over the protecting strip 13 when the foot is raised upon the screw and the head 6 therefore does not come in contact with the building and mar the same. Furthermore this head braces the screw throughout its length and maintains it in vertical. position. The protective strip is removably carried by-the foot and is of ap proximately the same width as the roller 14 which is more clearly shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A device of the class described, comprising a base, a screw revolubly mounted therein, a lifting bracket threaded upon the screw, means for turning the screw in the base and bracket whereby the latter is raised or lowered upon the screw, a bearing member carried by the foot and extending up alongside of the screw, and an anti-friction device revolubly carried by the head of the screw and bearing upon said member.

2. A device of the class described comprising a base having a socket therein, a screw revolubly mounted in said socket, a lifting bracket threaded upon said screw, means for operating the screw, a protecting strip removably carried by the bracket and extending parallel with the screw, a head rotatably mounted upon the upper end of the screw, and an anti-friction device carried by said head and bearing against said protecting strip.
