UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SEEP, OF CANTON, OHIO.
GARMENT-HANGER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SERP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garment hangers and more particularly to the type employed for suspending and pressing trousers.
One object of the invention vision of a hanger the parts of which may be separated and the hanger arranged in a comparatively small compass for packing.
Another object is the provision of a hanger provided with means to engage the edges of a trousers and further provided with means for holding suspended the crotch of a trousers during the operation of pressing.
With these and other objects in View, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification ;Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing its application to a trousers. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a detail per spective of one of the spring clamps.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
A pair of pressers are provided and each is shown to include in its construction a pair of oblong strips designated by the numerals 5 and 6 said strips corresponding in length, width and thickness. The strips of each pair are united adjacent to their opposite ends by means of hinges designated by the numerals 7 and 8.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the strip 5 of each pair is pro vided adjacent to its opposite ends and on the outer face thereof with outwardly exis the pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

tending studs 9 having enlarged heads. The pressers are adjustably held in spaced relation by means of a double pair of straps arranged adjacent to the opposite ends of the pressers. The straps of each pair hearing one upon the other and are designated by the numerals 10 and 11. The straps are provided for the major portions of their lengths with oblong slots 12, the strap 10 being provided adjacent to one end with a stud 13 which extends through the slot in the strap 11 and limits the movement of said straps in one direction. The straps are held adjustably secured by means of a threaded bolt 14:, passing through the slot-s 12, the head end of said bolt bearing on the outer face of the strap 10 and threaded onto the opposite end of the bolt is a winged nut 15, which when binding on the outer face of the strap 11 will hold said straps against endwise movement. Adjacent to their outer ends the straps l0 and 11 are provided with key- hole slots 16 and 17, the circular portions of said slots receiving the heads at the ends of the studs 9, the oblong portion of theslots receiving the shanks of said studs and being of less diameter than the heads, whereby the straps are removably secured upon the studs.
The inner surfaces of the strips are held bearing one upon the other by a plurality of resilient clamps arranged adjacent to the opposite ends of the strips. These clamps are each formed of a single piece of resilient sheet metal bent into a U-shape the opposite sides of which are designated by the numerals l8 and 19, the terminals of said sides being curved outwardly, as shown at 20. With this construction it will be manifest when the sides 18 and 19 are sprung apart that the clamps may be passed over the opposite outer sides of the strips and when released will yieldingly hold said strips against outward movement.
Since the pressers are designed to extend from a point in alinement with the inseam of the lower end of the trousers it is evident that some means must be provided for supporting the waist or body portion of the trousers when the pressers are applied. In order to carry out this construction and at the same time to provide a means for suspending the device I provide an extensible bar, the sections of which are designated by the numerals 21 and 22. The sections are each formed of a single piece of wire one end of which is curved to the shape of a hook, as shown at 23, and the opposite end in the drawings. The hooks 23 are designed to engage with the Suspender buttons at the front and back of the trousers, as shown in the drawings. Connection between the hooks 23 and the strips 5 of the pressers is established by means of a pair of hangers 25 and 26. The hangers are preferably formed of single pieces of wire terminating at their opposite ends in eyes which receive the hooks 23 and similar hooks 27 secured to the upper ends of the strips 5 of the pressers.
In order that the crotch of the trousers may be held supported when the pressers are applied to the edges of the trousers the following construction is employed :-By reference now to the drawings, it will be seen that an elastic strap 28 is provided at one end with a hook 29 to receive the section 21 and at its opposite end is provided with a spring jaw clip 30. The jaws of the clip 30 are adapted to engage the crotch of the trousers after the same have been positioned on the device, and by virtue of the strap 28 will pull the crotch upwardly for the required distance so that the formation of wrinkles in the body portion of the trousers and more especially between the legs thereof will be positively prevented.
From the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in' structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
I claim In a trousers press, a pair of lower members each embodying adjustably connected elements, pressing elements carried by the said lower members and adapted to be engaged with the leg portions of the trousers, an upper member embodying adjustable elements arranged in parallel relation with respect to the elements of the said lower members, means connecting the elements of the upper member with the said pressing elements, and an elastic stretching element supported by the upper member and provided with means for engaging the crotch portion of the trousers.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
