COUCH FOR USE ON THE WATER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARPAD KASZTRINER, physician, subject of the King of Hungary, and residing at Satoralja-Ujhely, in the Kingdom of Austria-Hungary, have invented a new and useful Couch for Use on the Water; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

It is often desirable for medical reasons or for the sake of comfort or convenience that bathers or invalids undergoing a water cure should be able to remain resting on the surface of the water in a recumbent position during a protracted period. Appliances for this purpose have hitherto been complicated and therefore costly.

Now this invention has for its object to provide an improved floating couch composed of bamboo or other suitable material rendered buoyant by means of air tubes so that it will be supported on the surface of the water in such a manner as to enable the person lying on it to be subjected to convenient and undisturbed medical treatment.

The improved floating couch consists substantially of three portions jointed to one another so as to be capable of being folded together. Each portion consists of netting stretched across a frame of bamboo. The outer or end frames are jointed to the middle frame in such a manner as to fold inward in opposite directions and are connected to each other positively by means of cords so that when the frame that supports the legs or feet of the patient is depressed the frame that supports the head of the patient will be raised.

One construction of the improved couch is illustrated by Way of example in the accompaying drawings in which:

The improved couch consists of three frames 1, 2, 3, of bamboo or other suitable material with netting stretched across or between the sides or ends of each frame. These frames 1, 2, 3, are designed to support respectively the head, body and legs of the person resting on the couch, and are jointed or hinged to one another so that the frame 1 can fold over the frame 2, and the frame 3,

can fold under the frame 2. The abutting ends of the frames 1 and 2 are arranged to meet at an angle as indicated at 1 in Fig. 1, in order that the frame 1 shall be inclined at a small upward angle when in its position of use. A. bolt 6 slidable in a socket 5 is provided for the purpose of fixing the frame 3 in the horizontal position. An air tube or float 7 is provided capable of being slid in the usual manner on cords along the underside of the frame 1. This air tube and the side air tubes hereinafter described serve to support the couch with the person resting thereon on the surface of the water. An air cushion 8 serving as a head rest is attached to the upper side of the frame 1. The frame 1 is made narrower than the middle frame 2 so that it can fold inside the frame 2. Side supports 9 of oblique parallelogram form are attached to both longitudinal sides of the middle frame 2; they inclose the air tubes 10 that support the couch with the air tubea'? arranged under the head frame, upon the surface of the water. A cord 11 attached to the outer end of the frame 1, passes over pulleys 12 mounted on the side supports 9, and is attached at its other end to the outer end of the frame 3. By this means the frames 1 and 3 are connected positively together so that when the fastening 5, 6 has been undone, the frame 1 is raised at an angle when the frame 3 is depressed. The transverse rod 13 connecting the sides of the middle frame 2 together, which is situated nearest the frame 1, is bent or curved so as to allow a person to lie or sit with comfort on the couch. The side support is connected to the transverse connecting rods by means of bent or curved supporting bars 141 (Fig. 4).

In use the couch assumes the position shown in Fig. 1.

In its folded position, the frame 1 lying upon the frame 2, and the frame 3 (after the bolt fastening 5, 6 is undone) lying under the frame 2, the couch takes up very little space and can be very easily transported.

The couch may be provided with oars or paddles not shown, for the purpose of executing slight movements on the water.

I declare that what I claim is 1. In a floating couch as set forth, a head supporting frame, a legs supporting frame, a middle frame, rollers mounted on the side supports of the middle frame, cords passing over the said rollers and connecting to gether positively the head supporting frame and the legs supporting frame and'providing means by which on the user depressing the legs frame,the head supporting frame Will be elevated.
