OILING-CAN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ED BLACK, citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oiling-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oiling cans and its object is to provide a safety oiling can.
Another object is to provide an oiling can having a pointed spout thereon, and having means to protect the said pointed spout.
Tn oiling machinery it is necessary to use a can having a long narrow spout pointed at the end so that it will easily enter the oil holes in machinery. It has been found that cans of this character are exceedingly dangerous and many persons have lost their lives or have been injured through accidentally knocking their heads against the pointed spout or stepping thereon in descending from the ladder on which they stood to oil the upper part of a large machine.
My main object in inventing this can was to provide a can which will eliminate the possibilities of any such accidents, and to accomplish this purpose I have constructed the oiling can shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is an oiling can having a protecting means for the spout, said means being shown in vertical section, Fig. 2 is a detail View of the lower portion of the spout having a slot thereon, Fig. 3 of the protecting means.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings and in the specification, in which, 1 is a can having a screwthreaded neck 2 to which is screwed a tube 3 through the medium of the depending screwthreaded portion 4. This tube 3, forms the lower end of the spout and has a milled flange 5 thereon, and a slot 6. The upper part of the tube.
3 is reduced to form the upper portion 7 of the spout, leaving a shoulder 7 and terminates with a conical tip 21. Encircling the tube 3 is a tube 8 inclosing the spout, and having at the bottom thereof a flange 9. The upper part of this tube has a reduced upper portion 11, forming a shoulder 13 thereon, the upper part of the reduced portion having an outwardly extending flange 12 at the top thereof. 13 of the tube 8, is a chamber 1% in which is inclosed a spiral spring 15, which is seated on the shoulder 7 and has its lower end fixedly secured in the opening 7 in said shoulder. The upper end of this spring is fixedly secured to the shoulder 13 as at 17. The flange 9 has a bore 18 therein in which a pin 19 is seated, so that its inner end projects into the slot 6.
The spring 15 is slightly turned before it is fixedly secured at 7* so that it will have a tendency to turn the tube and the project ing pin toward the right angular projection 7 of the slot 6, causing the pin to normally seat in the right angular slot. The tension of the spring 15 also holds the tube 8 normally in a raised position as illustrated in Fig. 1. This holds the flange 12 above the pointed end of the spout, the tension of the spring inclining the tube 8 to turn, causing the pin 19 to take the position 22 in the right angular portion of the slot, and thus to lock the tube in its raised position, so that any blow on the head of the flange 12 will not force it down.
In order to use the oiler the operator simply straddles the tube 8 with his fingers, and through the medium of the flange 9 causes the tube to slightly turn. This releases the pin from the right angular portion of the slot and then by drawing the fingers down the tube 8 is caused to take the position shown by the dotted line 28, thus uncovering the end 21 of the spout, and the moment the oil can is set down and released from the grip of the fingers, the spring causes it to lock in a raised position.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An oil can having a protecting guard for the spout thereof and means for automatically raising and locking said guard.
2. An oil can having a protecting guard for the spout thereof and means for automatically raising and locking said guard, said guard having a right angular flange on the end thereof.
8. An oil can having a spout, a protecting guard for said spout, means for raising and locking said guard comprising shoulders on said spout and guard, a coil spring mounted on said spout having its ends abut said shoulders, a recess in said spout having a right angular portion and a pin on said guard operating in said recess.
