HEAD-REST.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NIoK WV. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ventura, in the county of Ventura and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a head rest especially adapted for attachment to an invalids bed and it is shown in connection with an invalid bed of the general character illustrated and described in my application entitled invalid bed filed October 3, 1907, bearing Serial Number 395,669. It will be understood however, that it may be attached to a bed of any character of construction.

The prime object of this invention is to provide a head rest which may be adjusted to any desired position so that the patient resting thereon may be placed in a sitting or reclining posture, and furthermore, to provide a mechanism whereby these changes may be easily made and quickly made' without any inconvenience to the patient.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification :Figure 1,- is a side elevation with parts in section of the improved head-rest. Fig. 2, is a condensed plan view of the same. Fig. 8, is a detail perspective of one of the elevating devices. In the drawings 5 designates a stationary bed frame carrying a movable frame 6 thereabove after the general plan of my invalid bed above referred to. Upper frame 6 carries the headrest, the patient resting upon straps or other supporting means secured to the upper frame. The upper frame is composed of side rails 7 and end rails 8, the end rails being preferably constructed of channel irons turned up edgewise as shown in Fig. 1.

The head rest consists of a frame 9 preferably composed of metallic tubing bent into a general rectangular form with its lower ends pivotally secured to slidable members 11. These members provide means for conveniently adjusting the lower end of the head rest to any desired position longitudinally of the bed. Transverse supporting straps 12 are secured in any preferred manner to frame 9 and are provided in sufficient numbers to give comfortable support to the head and body of the patient above the hips.

7 At the upper side of frame 9 are secured a number of brackets 13, preferably two in number to which elevating rods 14 are pivoted. These elevating rods pass downwardly through frames 15 pivoted at 16 to clips 17 which are adapted for placement over end rail 8 of the bed. Rods 14 have 1 longitudinal grooves 18 in which straps 19 are adapted to snugly lie, the end of the straps being secured as at 20 to the rods at the lower end of the grooves. Frames 15 revolubly support a shaft 21 which passes through both frames and is provided with a crank 22 on its outer end so that it may be rotated when desired. Straps 19 are adapted to be wound up on shaft 21 between flanges 23 thereon so that, when shaft 21 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow, the head rest will be raised. Similarly, by opposite rotation, the rest may be lowered to any desired position. One of the frames 15 carries a stationary member 25 of a ratchet clutch, the other member 26 being in sliding engagement on shaft 21 and pressed normally into engagement with member 25 by spring 27. A handle 28 on crank 22 provides means for holding the clutch members out of engagement when it is desired to lower the headrest, the clutch teeth being so placed as to prevent lowering.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a headrest which may be easily and quickly placed in any desired position without inconveniencing the patient in any manner. The construction utilized is simple and is not liable to become disordered. Proportions and arrangements of the parts may be changed to suit any style of bed frame upon which it is desired to place the head-rest, the general principle of construction and operation remaining the same whatever the construction of the bed frame may be.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Combined with a supporting member, a frame pivoted thereto, a rod pivoted to said frame, a sleeve pivoted to said sup porting member in which said rod is adapted to slide, a roller attached to said sleeve, a strap having one end attached to said roller and the other end attached to said rod, and means for operating said roller.
