2 Be it known that I, CHARLES D. Rnnvns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county'of Schenectady tain' new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pin Guards, of which the following is a coinpanying drawings.

My invention. relates to new and useful improvements in hatpin guards, and my object is to provide asiinple device which may be easily and quickly applied to the point of a hatpin to prevent the wearer from injuring persons nearby. I

A'further object is to provide ,a device which iscomposed of few parts, but which parts are extremely eifective in accomplish ing the purpose for which they are devised.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a device which shall act not alone as a guard, but also as a securing device to prevent the withdrawal of the pin from the head while the same is positioned effectively.

With these and other objects inview my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularlypointed out in the pecification and claim.

Referring to the drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the guard applied to the point of a hatpin; Fig. '2 is a longitudinal section through the device; Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the device showing the jaws in locked engagement with a por-' tion of the pin; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a slight modification of the invention. j i

To position this device the same is merely slipped upon the end of the pin extending beyond the crown of a hat, allowing said pin to enter the longitudinal grooves, which action guards the point of said pin from injuring surrounding persons, but to insure the device from becoming lost, or otherwise rernoved, the ring 5 is drawn into enga ement with the tapered jaws and d and Jy forcing the same thereon the pin will be securely held. This spherical member is provided through the axial center thereof with a longitudinal slot substantially circular in cr'osssection, said slot being contiguous with the grooves of the sleeve portion, thereby receiving the point of the pin as the same is inserted therein. I am aware of the fact that numerous devices of this kind have been patented, but to my knowledge I do not know of one, the exact construction of which is like the one hereinabove described and shown in the drawing, andthe operation of which is as effective.

What I claim is:

A hat pin protector, comprisin a sleeve member having one end thereof spllt to form spring jaws, said member being tapered greater toward its split end, a ring member encircling said sleeve and movable to close said jaws, a head at the opposite end of said sleeve having a slot therein in alinement with the opening of the sleeve, and a removable closure for the slot at the outer end of said head, said closure having a cushioning means on the inner face thereof.
