To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ORVILLE E. GORDON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rays Crossing, in the county of Shelby and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishing Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to apparatus for the convenient and prompt use of watchmen or other employees in elevators, mills, factories and other establishments, whereby fires may be extinguished in their incipienoy.

The object of the invention is to provide apparatus of the above-mentioned character that may be cheaply obtained and readily kept in condition for immediate use in all places where fire hazard is great, in order that destructive or damaging confiagrations may be prevented by any one at hand who may discover a fire that might be liable to cause damage; a further object being to provide simple portable fire extinguishing apparatus comprising buckets adapted to discharge either large or small quantities of water or fire extinguishing liquid and so constructed that they may not be conveniently used for other purposes, therefore will not be removed from their accustomed places by careless workmen for other than the purposes for which they are intended to be used.

With the above-mentioned and minor objects in view, the invention consists in apparatus comprising a tank to hold liquid and provided with a hollow lid and one or more buckets held removably under the lid for carrying the liquid from the tank to a fire, each bucket having a partially closed top and a spout so that liquid may either be poured rapidly from the uncovered portion or poured in small quantities from the spout, the bottom of the bucket being provided with a stifi handle for guiding the bucket in use and also to prevent the bucket from standing upright alone, so that it is not adapted to be used for ordinary purposes, and the invention consists further in the parts, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter particularly described and then defined in the accompanying claims.

The apparatus as preferably constructed is made principally of relatively thin galvanized iron, so as to be cheap and durable, the tank comprising a circular bottom 1 preferably having a Wooden reinforcement 2 under it, a cylindrical side wall 3 attached to the bottom and having a turned over stifiened bead 4 at the upper end thereof, the bead being preferably rolled over a wire ring 5. The rear portion of the tank has a cover part 6 suitably secured thereto preferably by turning the edge portion 7 thereof over the bead 1 and otherwise as may be desired, the cover part 6 having hinge members 8 on the forward edge thereof that are turned over a hinge rod 9. Another part to cover the remaining portion of the tank is constructed as a movable hollow lid con prising a front and side wall part 10 curved to conform to the curvature of the tank wall, a straight or fiat back part 11 attached to the ends of the part 10 and adapted to rest on the cover part 6 when the lid is open, the lower edge of the back having hinge-members 12 thereon turned over the rod 9, the middle portion of the back 11 preferably having a reinforcing piece 13 on the inner side thereof.

but it is preferred that the tank have a capacity of approximately fifty gallons or more and each bucket to hold approximately two and one-half gallons, so that two buckets may be conveniently stored in the lid .of the tank.

The inner side of the top 15 of the cover is provided with two pairs of guides 17, 17'

and 18, 18, the-two guides of each pair being suitably spread apart, so that a bucket may stand against them when the lid is open, each pair of guides having a spring clasp mounted thereon to hold the bucket when placed against the guides, the two clasps comprising curved arms 19, 19 and 20, 20, to embrace the bodies of the buckets, and the arms preferably have outwardlyextending ends 21 and 21 to enable the buckets to force the arms apart when inserting the buckets in the clasps.

The buckets are alike, each comprising a body part 22 or 22 and a bottom 23 attached to the body part, the lower portion of the body part having a relatively large bead or flange 24: thereon to engage the under sides of the spring clasps to prevent accidental displacement of the buckets when held by the clasps. The under side of the bottom 23 has a stiff metal handle 25 thereon that prevents the bucket from standing in upright position. The body of the bucket is provided as usual with cars 26, 26, to which a bail '27 is connected, and the top of the bucket is partially closed by a curved cover 28 below which is an aperture 29 in the body of the bucket, the body being provided with a spout 30 to conduct the liquid from the aperture when the bucket is tilted.

In practical use any suitable fire extinguishing liquid composition or Water may be kept at all times in the tank, and a suitable number oftanks may be distributed in different parts of a building, as will be understood, each'tank being normally closed to exclude foreign matter and'to inclose the buckets, so as not to be seen ordinarily by triflers who might be disposed to use them for other than the purposes intended, and in case of an accidental fire the lid may be tilted back on its hinges so as to stand in upright position, when it will be apparent that any one may quickly by the exercise of a little force remove the buckets from their holding clasps and fill them at once in the tank, so that any one at hand may extinguish the fire without loss of time. When the buckets are not required for use they should be replaced with their handles 25 resting on the back 11 of the cover and their bodies against the guidesand secured by the spring clasps, and so held the lid may be drawn forward to its normal position and will normally support the buckets in substantially horizontal position ready for use when again required.

Having thus described theinvention, what is claimed as new, is

Fire-extinguishing apparatus comprisinga tank, a hollow lid hinged to the tank and normally covering the top thereof, a pair of embracing arms mounted on the inner side of the horizontal top of'the lid, supporting devices mounted on the inner side of the upright side of the "lid, and a bucket removably held by the pair of embracing arms on the supporting devices.
