JOINT FOR PUMP-BARRELS.
Application filed May 1, 1909, Serial No. 493,309. Renewed July 22, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK M. PRES- COTT and E'UoLn) P. WORDEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for PumpBarrels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to outsidepacked plunger pumps or pumps having two barrels or cylinders arranged end to end. Its main objects are to dispense with soft packing heretofore commonly used in the joints between the barrels or cylinders of such pumps and found a source of trouble and annoyance; and to accurately center the barrels or cylinders and hold them in exact alinement with each other.
It consists in certain novel features of construction and in the peculiar arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter particularly described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing like characters designate the same parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is an axial section of the abutting ends of two pump barrels in connection with which the present invention is shown; and Fig. 2 is an end View, the plane and direction of one of the pump barrels being indicated by the dotted line 2-2 and arrows, Fig. 1.
a a designate the abutting ends of the barrels or cylinders of an outside-packed reciprocating plunger pump which are secured together in the usual manner by bolts 6 passing through the flanges c. The abutting end or head of each barrel is formed with a central cylindrical hole cl, which has an enlargement or counterbore e at its outer end next to the adjoining barrel. In the hole of each barrel is fitted a plug f, formed with a flange g fitting into the enlargement or counterbore e. The plugs and the holes in which they are fitted are preferably slightly tapered so as to insure tight joints. The counterbore e of the hole in one barrel is made of less depth than the flange g on the plug inserted therein, while the counterbore of the hole in the other barrel is made of greater depth, so that the larger end of one plug will project from one barrel into Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911.
Serial No. 640,017.
the counterbore in the other barrel and thereby accurately center and hold the barrels in perfect alinement with each other.
When the ends of the barrels with the plugs inserted therein are bolted together, as shown in Fig. 1, the flanged ends of the plugs abut against each other, while the shoulders formed by the flanges bottom in the counterbores of the holes in the barrels. The plugs are thus securely held in place and cannot be moved by pressure within the pump barrel. A tight joint is also formed between the barrels, dispensing with the soft packing heretofore commonly used in joints of this class.
Various modifications in details of c011- struction may be made without departing from the principle and scope of the invention.
IVe claim:
1. In a pump, the combination of two barrels or cylinders arranged end to end and formed in their abutting ends with registering holes, and plugs tightly fitted in and closing said holes, one of the plugs proj ecting from one barrel into the hole in the other and holding the barrels in exact alinement with each other, substantially as described.
2. In a pump, the combination of two barrels or cylinders arranged end to end and formed in their abutting ends with counterbored holes, and flanged plugs tightly fitted in and closing said holes, the flanged end of one of the plugs projecting from one barrel into the counterbore of the hole in the other barrel, substantially as described.
3. In a pump, the combination of two barrels or cylinders arranged end to end and formed in their abutting ends with central counterbored cylindrical holes which exactly register with each other when the cylinders are in alinement, and flanged plugsfitted in and tightly closing said holes, the flanged end of one plug projecting from one barrel into the counterbore of the hole in the other barrel and abutting against the plug therein, substantially as described.
4. In a pump, the combination of two barrels arranged end to end and formed in their abutting ends with smooth count-erbored holes and flanged plugs fitted in and closing said holes, substantially as described.
5. In a pump the combination of two barrels arranged end to end and formed in In Witness whereof we hereto afiix our sigtheir abutting ends {with rgggstering c(iun natures in presence of tWo Witnesses. terbored tapered ho es an ange pugs tightly fitted in and closing saidholes, the SCOTT flanged end of one of the plugs projecting from one barrel into the counterbore of the Witnesses:
