UNITED sTATnsrATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS E. S'MYTHE, or
BELLEFONTAINE, GHIO.
FURNACE-DOR OPENER .AND CLOSER.
To all 'whom 'it' may concern:
Be ,it known thatI, THOMAS E. Sarria-in, a Vcitizen of the United States,. residing at lfellefon'taine, in the county of Buchanan and Sta-teef Ohio, have invented a, new' and useful Improvement in Furnace-Door `Openers aii'd Closers, of which the folloiv ingr isa specification This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ,door openers and closers, the object being1r to. provide mcclia, nisni for opening and closing doors of steam' boilers usedin connection with locomotives, whereby sai'd doors can be readily opened and iclosed by simply operating `a foot.- leve'r.
Vfurther object of my invention is to provide a f urnace'door formed ot two sections which are carried by leversm such a manner that the door sections will be swung open and closed when the levers vare 'rocked 'in such a manner that all danger ofthe door sections binding in any way isfprevented.
A.' further object of .the invention is to provide adoor formed of tvvo sections, each sectionbeing carried by a air of levers which are operated by Va sli ably mounted member controlled vby a piston in such a manner `that when air or steam is' admitted in4 one endfoftI-he cylinder in which the pis- Aton is mounted the doors will be swung into a closed ,position and .when admitted in the opposite en'd of the cylinder the door sections will be swung apart into an openposition.
A stillfnrther object of my invention is to rovide a novel form otleversfor con tro ling the valve' for admitting .steam into the cylinder 4whereby 4said valve would be .moved so,as to admit steam into either end of thecylinde'r by siniplyzipressing slightly ontoiie ofthe levers.
Still another object of the invention is to' prowide means for adjustingthe exhaust port of thev cylinder' whereby the slammii'ig ofthe-.doors when forced' together preveii'ted,`.`as by regulating thesize ofthe 'opening anair cushion4 can be formed soA that [the doorsyvill close m .such 'a' manner that all dangerlof the doors becoming iiijiired'in s-nywayis prevented.
stillx-'f-urther nlnect o ffmy invention is tofbprovide, a door. wliiohis soconstructedA Specification of Letters Patent.

linvention consists in the novel features of construction7 arrangement and combination yof parte, all of which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.l
In the drawings forming apart of thisA specification: Figure 1 is aside elevation fof n iy im ln'oved furnace door partly in section. g2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig'. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical'sectionftaken on the line 3--3 of Fig."
l.. Figa-4 is a Vdetail vertical section showing the manner of mounting the foot levers for controlling the valve. Fig'. 5 is a. per
spectiveview of the sliding operating block detached. Fig. 6 is a detail vert-ical section taken on the. line G-6 of Fig. 1. Fig.
7 is adetail section through the steam chestof the cylinder showing the manner of ulati'ng the size of the exliaiist in order to form a cushion for the piston. -Fig 8 isa side elevation of aV modified form `of door,
and Fig 9 is a det-ail' view ofthe-same showingv the manner of mounting the stop blocks for limiting the movement of the lever arms. '1 'f lIn carrying out my improved invention,
II employ a. door frame proper A which is constructed the same as -an ordinary door used on furnaces and is provided with apertured hinge lugs A which are adapted to co-aot with tliehinge lugs of the furnace so that-:by detaching the door now in use on a furnace my improveddoor can be 4readily placed in position thereon. The other'tend of the frame A is provided with the usual latch "member A which is adapted to eoact with the catch carried by theV furnace inl a similar manner to doors oflthis character now in use. The frame Ais' provided-With Arwhieh communicates with `t e in iorfoiM tthe-,iurn-ece and said [rib has .forxpedi teral therewith a rectangular plate A w ich is also provided withl an opening registering with the opening `A and had an annular flange A at its edge. The annular'l rib A of the frame A is provided with webportions AT for strengthening the sameand 1t will be seen that the frame A is cast in-- tegral with the plate 'A5 in such a manner two fhollow sections F", F2 which are provided with internal ribs so as to form air spaces between the wallsof the door sections in vorder to allow free ventilation and the lower edgeof the upper section F is provided with 'a V-shaped groove F3- and the upper edgeof the section F 2 is provided with a' V-shaped tongue F4 adapted to fit within the groove F3 when the door sections are brought together so as to form an ``exceedingly vtight 'joint and it will .heseen that/byifor'ming the lower-section with a V- 'shaped tongue tlie='dirt and dust. or small particles ,of coal .which drop on the saine when the furnace is being fired will vslide off. Connected-to the side bar of the plate A5 carrying the levers is a casting G which is provided with-apertured lug portionsA G 'for securing theysame thereto and said casting Gr comprises'a cylinder portion GF and .40. a'housing'portion G3: inl which Slidably nlouiited :1n-'operating block l-l the forward moveinfcnt of which is limited by the lug A* and 'th-e''r'eg ward. nir-)vement ofv the s'a-lnc is j limited by-'bolts-'I carried thercby'whieh are I locked in'adjiistedjposition-by lock nuts'and.
which arev pivotally mount said l'piston rodl( 'carries amp'fifston head ht",
ting levers'lf; and() are proheads M, N of operating links M and N which are provided with cylindrical head 'portions 1P, N2 at their opposite ends which are seated in cylindrical sockets H formed in the operating block H so that when the block H is moved forwardly by the piston the operating levers B and ontheir pivots so as t0 swing the door sec tions apart, said sections being guided by the links D and E so that the strain on thc levers B and C is reduced. It will be seen tha-t as the block is moved forwardl the heads of the operating links M and hiwill move slightl in the cylindrical sockets of the head an levers in such a manner that the operating levers can move apart order to carry the door sections apart and when the block H is drawn rearwardly the operating links will draw the levers together so as' to carr the door ysections together in order to c ose the door. For holding the sect-ions in an open position so that'all danger of the door sect-ions closing'when a boiler maker has entered the furnace to repair the same I. provide the opposite side flange with C will be swung a pivoted catch 'O provided with a V-shaped tongue-portion 0 adapted vto fit Within the V-shaped groove 0f the upper section F of the door and it will be seen that by pressing on theouter end ofthe catch O so as to allow:
thedoor .sections to pass under the same and Athen swinging the same back into its. normal position the doors will be held in such a4 manner Athat it will be impossible for the.
doors to be accidentally closed.
