rrnn STA S MOUSE-TRAP.
Application filed February 1, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. QUnsrRoY, a subject of the Kin of Belgium, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Im' proved Mouse-Trap, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a new and improved form of mouse or rat trap. v
An object of my invention is to provide a means to kill the mouse or rat at the time it is caught.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simply constructed trap having relatively few parts which might get out of order, and which is strong and durable.
With the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my trap, showing some of the parts in dotted outline; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the trap on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. & is a transverse sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 2.
In the several figures I have disclosed a substantially rectangle-shaped box 1, of any preferred construction or size having a door 2 in one of its faces. Opening into the box from the door 2, is a small compartment 3, comprising a side wall 1 in line with one edge of the door 2 and having a removable back closure 5, which closure may be raised by means of a projecting handle 6. This compartment has a cover 7 extending from the wall 4 to the next adjacent side 8 on the opposite side of the door opening 2. The forward end of the wall 4:, adjacent the door opening 2, is recessed at 9, into which recess is adapted to move a door closure 10 in a slot 11 extending transversely across the door opening 2. This door is held in Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 605,873.
closed position by means of a coil spring 12 fastenedto the back of the side 13 of the body of the trap, and passing around a stud 1 1 has its elongated end 15 engaging in a bracket 16 centrally disposed in the door closure 10. From the rear edge of the door closure 10 extends a stud 26 against which bears one end of a bell crank lever 17 pivoted to the floor 18 of the trap, the other end of whlch lever is engaged by the arm 19 of an angularly disposed lever 20, which lever is pivoted to a stud 21 disposed in rear of the back closure 5 and extends through a slot 22 in said closure, to project into said compartment 3 to carry a bait 23.
The trap is set by opening the hinged cover 24, drawing the closure 10 open against the action of the spring 12 and holding the closure 10 by engaging the bracket 26 with the lever 17, which in turn is held by the bait-holding lever 20.
The compartment 3 is not large enough to contain the body of the rat or mouse, but is only of suflicient size to admit the head of the rodent, so that as the rat or mouse puts its head within this compartment to eat the bait 23, the knife edge 25 of the closure 10 will be opposite its neck. Nibbling on the bait, the rodent will release the lever 20, which in turn will release the door closure 10, and this acting by the force of the strong spring 12, will forcibly project the knife edge of the closure into the neck of the rodent, thereby strangling it.
Many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely diiferent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof. It is intended that all matters contained herein in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is merely intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween, and that materials, sizes and relativities of parts are non-essential, except as called for in the claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a mouse trap having a compartment therein, an opening in said trap giving entrance to said compartment, one side of said compartment being recessed, a sharp edged door closure movable in said recess to close said opening and to cut anything in its path, said closure having a bracket thereon, a coil spring having one end engaging said bracket and the other end fastened to said trap, a stud extending from said closure, a bell crank lever pivoted to said trap and engaging the said stud, and bait-holding means opposite said opening pivoted to and extending through the rear Wall of said compartment and having a hooked end removably engaging an end of said lever, Where- 15 by the movement of the rodent against said bait-holding means Will release the engagement of said bell crank lever with said closure, to permit said spring to actuate said closure, to decapitate the rodent.
In testimony whereof I have signed my, name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
