Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Application filed Ianuaw 12, 1911. Serial No. 602,193.
Patented Aug. 29, 1911.
of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ()dometers, of which the following is a specification, referonce being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part'hereof.
This invent1on relate; to the means for other yehicles which are mounted. within casings secured'to or forming parts of-the hubs of vehicles to rotate therewith, the actuation of the registering mechanism be ing effected through connections to' 'the stationary axles'upon which the Wheels are 'mounted. V
The invention is particularly concerned with the actuating connections and has for its object ito provide meohanismrb which.
the register shall be driven in one 'irection only, while the n'ieeluin1sin itself is comp aratively simple'gin construction and is certain in operation.-
Theinvention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to the accompan ing drawings in which it is illustrated an in which- Figure 1 is a view, partly in end elevation and partly in transverse section, of a wheel hub with the invention appl ed thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the plane indicated by the-line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows. F ii. 3 is a view in section on the plane indicate by the line 3--3 of'Fig. 1, loolring in the direction of the arrows. Fig, 4 1s a view similar to Fig. 1 but with some of the parts removed so as to show others behind them more plainly,
Enough of a wheel huh (I, of ordinary construction, is shown in the several figures,
of the drawings to enable the application of the invention to be understood, the end of a stationary axle Z), on which the wheel is mounted,-being shown in Fig. 2. The hub,
is shown as ha'vin' formed integrally therewith a' cape whic forms 'a register chamher a, separated from; the axle chamber a by a plate at whichis removably secured in the hub and supports the register e and, in
with the construction of the driving mecha nism therefor.
The driving shaft of the register has secured thereon a bevel gear 6 which meshes with a. bevel gear 1 mounted loosely on a shaft 9' which is supported in suitable bear ings in the plate d and in the end of thejqap.
.I he shaft 9 has secured to its end, on the side of theplate a? adjacent to the axle endb, an arm fiiiwhich slotted as shown by dotted lines at 71. in Fig. 1 for engagement with a bin 2' secured eccentricallyto the axle b, so that as the hub rotates about the stationary axle the arm and shaft are oscillated. On the shaft g is secured a pawl earrier g' having one or more spring-pressed pawls g which engage and are a apted to actuate a ratchet wheel f secured to the hub of the 'earf. In this manner the register 2 is riven through the oscillations of the shaft g which are effected through.
the engagement of the stationary, eccentric pin 2' with the arm hwhich revolves with the hub. As eifeetive'movement of the, pawl carrier is accomplished-only b the com letie ..revolution of the shaft 9 an arm h i. out the stationary eccentric pin '12 and as the pin moves freely in the slot of the arm the register 'mechanismis not affected by the rela- I tive displacement of the hub and axle which necessarily occurs.
It will be understood construction and arrangement may be that the details of' varied to suit different conditions of use and that the invention is not restricted to the precise construction shown and de scribed herein. I claim as my invention:
. The combination with a wheel hub, of a register sup orted bythe hub, a shaft su ported. by the hub, an arm secured to t e shaft and adapted for engagement with a etationary'eccentric 15in carried by the axle, This specifi'cation signed and witnessed 'a pawl carrier secured to the shaft,,a pawl this 10th day of J anua'ry, A. D. 1911. carried thereb a ratchet wheeimounted to rotate on sai shaft and engaged by said CURTIS HUSSEYVLLDEB 5 pawl, .a gear secured to said-ratchet wheel Signed in the resence 6f and a register driving gear engaged by said ,CHARLES ALLYN,
last named gear. r AMAsA TROWBRIDGE.
