Description
H. ROWN TREE. CAR LOOKING HEOHANISM. APPLIOA'I'IOI nun IA! 13, 1001.
, Patented 11118.29, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD ROWNTREE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO NA'IIQNAL PNEUMATIC COMPANY, A CORPORATIOHJDF WEST VIRGINIA.
CAB-LOCKING MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that T, Hallow Rijnvn'rnne, when in its centered position a citizen of the United States, reidi ng at Chicago, county of Cook, and fitate ot ]ll1 no'is, have made a certain new and useful Tuventi-on in (larlioclnng ltleehamsm, of which the following; is a spccificat-itni.
This invention relates to car locking mech anisnn 'lhe ohject of the invention is toprovnlc means which are simple and ellicient for positively forcing the hoisting motor controller to position to stop the motor whenever an elevator door open, and to posttivcly lock such controller in this-position as long as the door remains open.
hirther ohjcctis to provide a centering mechanism for the hoisting motor controller and means rendered operative by the openinn of a door for o 'ierating suchcentering mechanism, whereby the car hoisting motor 'li rcialcred inoperative as long as the door remains open.
further object. to provide means for lin'isiti cly forcing the valve which controls the motion of an elevator car to centered or cut oil" relation whenever a door is opened, v
Other objects of the invention Will hear more fully hereinafter. The invcntipn consists substantially in the construction, combination, location and relatire arrangement of parts "all as Wlll be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the 21060111 panyi-no' drawing and linally pointed out in the n'ieiided claims. i The single View 0. the drawing shows the application of a construction of car locking uiechanism'ernlnnlyingg"the principles of my i'i'ivention. to a hoisting motorcrn'itroller of the hydraulic pilot valve type, and in association with two elevator doors, one of the doors being shown open and one closed.
In the operation] of elevators it is'desirable to provide means whereby the hoisting; motor coutrolhn' is positively forced to centered position, that. is, to position to arrest the motor, whenever a door of the elevator htttchway or of the car is opened, and the controller is [msitively locked in such positiohjas long, asthe door remains open.
In safety devices and mechanism of the chi s to which myinvention relates, whieh ha e .heretoiore been. em ilo vcd it has been enfleavored tolock the car in its guides in Specification of Letters Patent.

the hatchway or else lock the control valve Such devices are open to the objection of loss of time in their application, and :Frerpwntly a lailnrc, in attaining the locking position of the parts.
It is among the special purposes of my n'esont invention to provide means, iinlcpendent of the hoistil'ig motor control lever on the car, and which is automatically operated when an elevator or l'iatchvvay door is opened, for positively moving or forcing the hoisting motor control. IDCClltlIllSlll to center position long asthe door remains open.
Many specifically dill'ercnti constructions may be devised for accomplishing;the desired result. and while, l'l'HJI'OZFOlU, I have shon'h andwill now describe one "form of mechanism, which is well adapted for carrying my invention into practical operation I desire it to be understood that in its broadest contemplation as defined in the claims my invention is not to be confined or limited to the-exact form of construction shown in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing reference sign A, designates the hoisting motor control device on the ear, which, in this instance, in the form of a hand lever, B the control connection assimilated'with the control device on the ear and which, in the form shown, is a cable, and C is. the through which the operation of" the hoisting motor controlled. shown, a pilot valve fora hydraulic elevator is disclosed which may he of the usual or. any sl'iitable or desirable-type or COllStIllCi'lOIl for controlling the direction or speed of-the hoisting motor andconnected for operation by the lever through. the control device conncction B which is attached to a rocking arm I), through the rocking of which the valve is operated.
Reference signs E, F, designate doors of the elevator well or'shaft one ofwhich, as E, is shown in open position'and the other, I isshown closed. any suitable or. arrangement such as is ordinarily employed in elevator-or similar constructions, and the control device on the car, the motor com troller and the intermediate connections may, similarly, be of any suitable, convenient, or
well known construction and arrangement,
hoisting motor controller In the particular form These doors may be of, convenient construction and and in the specific details of such eons tyucdigGQiliQlllO tion and arrangement form nb part of my fora h present-invention.
Inacxzordamm" with" the prl' mipllas' off my 5 invention I I rop'cs'e-to prfivid, @3333 which arererllifil fl flH-tomflflfiiflg, h any dwbisopansdto p motor-cont)? townte'r whatwar iitsf p e bndfhe iewav ter'wei'glit to nectioii-EK. l When-Javier 1 011930 i$ positi ely the motor wi l os'itilon, pr 1 P9 bell crank lever is arr-anged to cooperate with a stop 21, on the connection 17, in such manner that when a door 1s open, as indicated at E, the bell crank lever 19, adjacent thereto or coo )erating therewith 1s rocked in a direction vor the arm thereof to enga ,e
the cooperating stop 21, wherebythe tension of retracting device 20, is exerted upon the connection 17, in a direction to augmcnh that of weight 16, the combined tensions of retractin device 20, and-weight 16, overcoining the tension device 18 and hence actuating'thc bell crank 15, and shifting valve 11, to position to close'exhaust connection 13, and to open cylinder 9, to its power and dium supply and hence'moving piston and consequently causing the ever 1, to rock into position to positively force this hoisting motor controller to center or cut on positi'oir- The parts are maintained in this position as long as any vdoor remains open. It will be observed that this operation takes place automatically whenever an y door is opened, and is wholly independent of the operation of the control device on the car. \Vhcnever the door is closed again the adjam at or cooperating bell crank lever 19,
is rocked, thereby, against the acticm, of.
From the foregoing description it'will be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple and cliicicnt construct on whereby the hoisting motor controller is positively forced to cause 'the arrest of the hoistin motor, Whenever a door is open. It will also be seen that this action lakes place automatically and indcpenden y of the motor control device on the car, and that the motor controller is positively maintained in its flzenter position as long as any door remains open, andis released, and the control thereof restored to-the control device on-the car whenever all doors are closed. gHaving' now set forth the object and netllfre of my invention and a construction embod ing the principles thereof, and having exp aincd such construction, its purpose, function and mode of operation, what I claim as new and useful and of my own in cut is cy The combination with 'amotor conof a pivoted lerer Weighted at one end, connections between the other end of said lever and the controller, a yoke engaging said lever, means for operating the yoke, a door and means operated by the opening of the door for hontrolling said yoke operating means. i
'2. The combination with a motor con- ,trollcr and means connected thereto for operating the same, of a ivoted lever, weighted at one end and having connection at its opposite end with the motor controller, a yoke having forks arranged to straddle said lever on opposite sides of its pivot, power mechanism for moving said HAROLD nowx'rnnn.
