H. s. ROOT, or MUNGY, PENNSYLVANIA.-
Letters Patent No. 100,192, dated February 22, 1870,
IMPQVEMEN'I m CAR-COUPLING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
tion thereof,- reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this application.
The nature of my invention consists- First, in a simple contrivance to hold the couplingpin in'an elevated position.
Second, in a frame suitably pivoted within the draw-head, which is-made to more or less depress the ends of the coupling-"ink entering the draw-heads, for
the purpose hereinafter described. 1 To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will pro- 'ceed to describe it, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in whic'l1 Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a side elevation of a draw head with my improvements attached. V
Figure 2, Sheet 1, is a central vertical section of v the same; and
Figure 3, Sheet 2, is a. cross-section taken atthe line a: a, fig. 2. 1
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
, A is intended to represent a draw-head having the usual front opening 3 to receive the link 0.
D D are coupling-pins passing through openings d, in the top and bottom of the draw-head.
Located centrally under the top opening is a swinging'frame, E, against the inner side e of which the pin D bears when in an elevated position and when the frame is hanging vertically.
This frame E is so pivoted to the arms of another frame, F, which surrounds it, as to swing independently of the said frame F; the latter is pivoted to the sides of the draw-head (on the inside) which it bites, so as to require a little force to move it, which is applied by a lever, G,-attached or keyed to one of the pivots on the outside of the draw-head.
The operation is as follows: v
The pin D being held elevated bythe frameE is released from that position by the link 0, which entering the opening B pushes back the frame E, when the pin D will'drop down through the link and pass into the opening-d in the base of the draw-head.
Suppose the draw-head upon a car to which this is to be coupled to be higher than the draw-head A, the link being attached to A, it would then be necessary to elevate the uncovered end of the link in order that it be guided direct into the other draw-heads This is accomplished by depressing the lever G, which swings down the drag or frame F against the covered end of the link, and oilcourse elevates the other end in a proportionate degree.
As the frame F may be .made to bite to a greater 'or less degree against the side of the draw-head, it will sustain the link in an elevated position, as described,
notwithstanding the jar incident to the movement of the car in approaching another.
The pivots of the frame F may also be the pivots of the frame E, as shown in the drawings, (see fig. 3,) the latter frame always swinging free of the former, or they may have independent pivots. In either case, one or both of thepivots of the frame F may be made adjustable, as experience or necessity may suggest, for the purpose of tightening the frame, as set forth.
The throat ofthe draw-head is provided at top and bottom with an incline or bevel at the former, for the purpose ofguiding the link so that it will strike the frame E below the pivots, andv also as a rest for the end of link, and at the Iatter'for the purpose also of guiding the link and to serve as a fulcrum when the uncovered endof the link is to be elevated.
The simplicity and easy application to all drawheads now in use are the chief advantages of my invention, as well as the manner in which the free end of the coupling-link is guided within the'draw-head of the adjoining car, which may be of varying height. Having described the construction and operationlof my improvements, 1 v
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. The frame E when pivoted between the arms of the frame F, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. The frame F pivoted to the sides of theldrawhead, and operated substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
Intestimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this day of January, A. D. 1870.
