' COLUMBIA PLANDGRAPH GIL-WASHINGTON. D C,
WILLIAM ALBERT CRAIG, OF NEW ERA, LOUISIANA.
HORSE-DETACHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM ALBERT CRAIG, a native citizen of the United States, residing at New Era, in the parish of Con cordia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to horse detachers, and is designed particularly to constructing a device of this nature whereby the breeching strap may be located adjacent to the shafts and be automatically released as the traces or tugs are released.
With the above and other objects in view, this invent-ion consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a top plan view of the shafts of a buggy or carriage provided with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Reference being had to the drawings, 10 indicates the shafts used in the construction being connected adjacent to their rear terminals with a bar 11, said bar having pivotally mounted thereon the swingle-tree 12. An angular breeching hook 13 is mounted on each shaft 10 on the inner face thereof in lieu of the eyes which have been heretofore used. These hooks 13 are open at their forward extremities so that when the tugs are released the horse may Walk from the shafts without unfastening the breeching straps.
The swingle-tree 12 is provided along one side thereof with the eyes 14: in which are slidably mounted the rods 15, one of said rods being located on each side of the center of the swingle-tree. The swingle-tree 12 is provided with a central bracket 16 to which is pivoted oppositely disposed levers 17, the inner terminals of said bell cranks being connected to the inner terminals of the rods 15. Thus it will be understood that by c011- verging the outer terminals of the levers 17 the rods 15 will be moved inwardly thereby releasing the traces which are secured to the outer terminals thereof. The free terminals of the swingle-tree 12 are provided with the eyes 18 in which the terminals of the rods 15 Specification of Letters Patent.

rest when the traces or tugs are secured thereby.
In order to provide means whereby the breeching straps may be locked in the hooks 13 when the tugs or traces are in their operative positions, a bell crank 19 is pivoted to the shaft 10 adjacent to the outer terminals of the hooks 13. One arm of the bell crank is adapted to project over and entirely close said hookwhile the opposite arm is connected to a link 20. The rear terminals of the link 20 are slidably pivoted to the bell cranks 21 which are also pivoted to a bracket mounted on the bar 11. The free arms of the bell cranks 21 are slidably connected to the ends side of the rod 15 and are offset upwardly so that said bell cranks will not interfere with the operation of the tugs.
From this construction it will be readily understood that when the rods 15 are moved inwardly toward the bracket 16, the bell cranks 19 and 21 will swing about their pivotal points causing the arms of the bell crank 19 which close the hook 14 to swing away from said hook and permit the breeching straps to be removed.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a draft rigging for vehicles, of a swingle-tree carried thereby, a centrally disposed bracket secured on said swingle-tree, a plurality of eyes carried by said swingle-tree, rods slidably mounted in said eyes, levers mounted on said bracket adapted to operate said rods, bell cranks mounted on said draft rigging adjacent to the free terminals of said rods and connected thereto, angular breeching hooks secured to the shafts of said draft rigging, and means whereby the open end of said hooks may be closed, said means being operable by said bell cranks.
2. The combination with a draft rigging, of a swingle-tree carried thereby, breeching hooks carried by the shafts of said draft rigging having their forward terminals open, bell cranks mounted on said shafts adjacent to said breeching hooks adapted to close the forward terminals thereof, a centrally disposed bracket mounted on said swingle-tree, levers mounted on said bracket,
i rods pivotally connected to said levers and projecting over the terminals of said sWingle-tree, the portions of said rods projecting over being adapted to retain the traces of said Whiflie-tree, bell cranks mounted on said draft rigging adjacent to the terminals of said sWingle-tree, one arm of each of said bell cranks being ofi'set upwardly and connected to one of the rods mounted on said sWingle-tree, and links 10 pivoted to the bell cranks located adjacent to the breeching hooks and slidahly conneoted to the remaining arms of the bell cranks adjacent to the sWingle-tree.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM ALBERT CRAIG.
