To all whom t# Imay concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL l. iixnnnws, a citizen ot' the United t'ltates, residing at- Kennebunk, county olf York, State ot Maine, have invented a` certain new and usetut lmprovement in Boats, ot which the tollowing `is a specification, re'lerence being had therein to the accompanyingl drawings.
My inventitm relates to a new and use't'ul improvement in boats.
The object ot my invention is to provide a boat ot simple and inexpensive construction and relatively light in weight yet ha ing great strength and sti'tlness.
The main Feature ot" the invention consists substantially in niaking the hull otj the boat of a single piece o't' chemical tber eut and molded into proper shape.
Other features relate to the means tor closing and protecting the joints at the ends and also to the gunwale.
Other features `will be more particularly described hereinafter.
The novel 'features of the invention are more Jfully set t'orth in the Yfollowing specification, and are clearly detined in the claims at the close thereof.
The invention may be employed in the construction o't'l boats ot.: any lform or purpose so long as they are ot' a size to permit them to be made t'rom a single piece or sheet of chemical fiber.
For the purpose oit illustrating the invention have shown it in the aceompanying drawings as embodied in a` canoe, although it is to be, understood that the claims are not. to be limited to the employment o't." the invention in a canoe or any other special l"orm or design.

Referring now to the drawings, A represeuls the hull or body otE the canoe which consists ott chemical liber. lrelferably this is made lrom a tlat sheet o'tE chemical liber ot proper size and thickness, (as shown in Fig. El), said sheet heilig cutY away or otherwise notched at the ends as shown at l, l, to torm the bow and stern oll the canoe or boat. 'lhe blank sheet thus produced then molded overa l'orm ot the right shape while the blank is in a green and workable condition. .it'ter it is closely titled to the 'lorm it is secured and allowed to set. lter the body or hull thus shaped and dried is removed `trom the liorm the adjacent edges C and tl ot the notches l. li, at the ends are practically in contact with each other. The contiguous edges (l at one end and (t at the other end are seeured by suitable waterproo'lf adhesivem lt. preferably marine glue, as shown in ll`ig. (i. A tender or shoe l) preterably ot metal is then applied, covering the said edges (l at one end and (.l at the other end and is firmly secured in place hy rivets o. Adhesive l2, pre'lerably marine glue. as above described is applied to the inside ot the shoe il). so that when the shoe is in place and is securely riveted, the edges (l and C are embedded in the adhesive thereby male ing a water tight joint at the bow and stern.
'lhe top ot" the sides ot the canoe adjacent the gunwale are when the lmll is molded, turned inwardly and then upwardly 'torming an L-shaped [lange having a substantially horizontal portion Q, and a Substantially vertical lip 3, and adding greatly to the rigidity and strength oit' the structure.
.i gunwale lll, preterably ot wood, is tormed with a longitudinal slotI or groove f1 in the lower tace thereoiti to receive the upwardly jnfojecting flanges or lips 3 ot the hull. as shown in Figs. t and rlhe groove -t is pre'tferably made sutliciently deep to reeeive the At'ull height ot' the upturned lip or tlange 3 so that the bottom ot the gunwale on the outer side ol the lip 3 will rest upon the horizontal portion 2 ol the said flange. '.lhe gunwale is tirmly secured to the upturned lip 2% by bolts 5 which pass transversely through the gunwale and the inclosed lip 2%.
Cross pieces t3, lor seat supports, are secured under the gmnvale by angle irons 7 and bolts 5 and 8. as shown in Fig. 4t. Thwarts t3 are preferably mortised into the gunwale as shown in Fig. 5, and secured by bolts 8, 9 and angle irons 10 in the usual manner.
The hull or body of the boat is varnished both interiorly and exteriorly with several Coats of marine varnish which gives it a hard, glossy, waterproof surface.
A boat thus constructed does not need and is not provided with ribs but has a subw stantiallyo smooth continuous interior surface, it is comparatively inexpensive to make, is light and is very efiicient in resisting abrasion or puncture from sharp rocks or other obstructions.
l. A boat having a hull made from an integral piece of molded material with smooth sides whose upper edge is formed with an L- shaped oli-set integral therewith, the base leg of said off-set extending horizontally inward and thence vertically upward.
2. A boat, the hull of which is made from an integral piece of molded material and having an L-shaped rim integra-l therewith ,A to receive a gunwale and a gunwale formed with a longitudinal groove which engages with the upwardly extending lip of said L- shaped rim.
8. A boat having a hull consisting of molded chemical fiber having the upper edges thereof formed with an L-shaped oii'- set and a gunwale formed with a longitudinal groove in the under side thereof itted into the upwardly extending lip of said L- shaped oset.
4. A boat having a hull consisting of molded chemical liber having the upper edges thereof formed with an L-shaped Oifset and a gunwale formed with a longitudinal groove in the under side thereof fitted onto the upwardly extending lip of said L- shaped offset, and seats held by angle iron hangers secured to the inner sides of the gunwale.
