TIE AND RlIL-FAESTENER.
Application tiled .Tune 10. 1911.
ie it known that l, Cinemas Sowine, a eitizen ot the llnited States ol` America, re-
siding' at Jerome, in the eounty ot Somerset and Stat-e ol. VPenneylvania, have invented l eertain new and usetul linproveniente iu Ties and ltail-it'auteners, ot' whieh the lol lowing is a speeilieatioin reterenee heing had therein to the aeeouiipairving drawing'.
This invention 'relateS to ties and rail 'tav tenere, and the objects ot' my invention are to provide a tie possesing Sul'lieient Ietrenggth and irnlnes4 to support the great weight ot rolling Stork, and to provide a tie having;` a hearing` Surface which will a'l'tord a sure and ready' means to attaehing` rail chairs.
(it-her ohjeeto ot my invention are to 'tur niSh a tie with positive and reliable. mean@ in a manner as will he hereinafter Set `torth tor prefervingr alinenent of rails, and preventing' lateral and Vvertical dieplaeenlent.
fltturther ohjeetS ot in v invention are to lurnish a metallic tie with a 'tante/ner that may he repeatedly adjusted to eoinp-eneate tor wear, etpaiieion and eontraetion, and to provide a 'fastener Vthat eau be inntalletjl hy uuSkilled lahor, inanutaet-ur-ed at a eoniparatively Small coat and Vuesed in eonnertion with various types o't railways.
With the aliove and other olijeeto in view the invention resides in a novel eonfitruoA tion, combination and arrangement ot parte to he hereinafter Speeitieally deserihed and then elaiined.
Reterenee will now he had to the drawing, wherein 'lftgure vl is a Side elevation of a portion oE a tie and rail 'taetener in aeeordanee with this invention. Wip". Z is a longitudinal Seetional view ot' the sainey Fig. 3 is a perspeetive 'view ot a detached rail ehair, Fig. t is i a perspective ot a detached outer fastener, a nd Fie; 5 in an elevation ot a key or wreneli eetpeeially deeigzjned tor the fastener.
The reterenee numeral l denotes an ololong' inetallie Slab eonatitutinn` a tie, and thin Slab, at the endg thereof is provided with vertieal openingzje Q tor holteI 9 ein ploved t'or retaining' a ehair plate /tupon the Slah. .fiaid holte havine the heada 5 thereof eounterfainltv in tlio chair plate and the lower ends: provided with nuts t. Formed integral with the ehair plate ft is S tor the hase tlanees t) and 4ttl o'tf a rail l'l. 'l`he inner edge ol the enlargement T hanl a transverse ril) 'l2 providing an aliuttiner aurlaee t'or the inner ha1=-ze llauge t), aud said rih hat, an over-ltanning` tlangre l) adapted to extend over the haue flange il and prevent vertieal displaeeuient, ot lQuid hase ltaugre. The enlargement and the ehair l plate Al are eut awzryn au at tlto provide a vertiral opening: and vertieal opliositely disposed rilv 153. 'lhe wall '1(3 ot" the openintllllA hanan integral hoes Vt7, whit-h is provided with a threaded socket 1S, 't'o' a pur pone that will preuently appear. The Side walls 'ttt ol' the enlargement are ehanrlred or e'rooved to provide `guide wa'ys S20 and the upper edges1 ot: eaid walls have vertieal proieetion1 2l.
llidallly mounted upon the eliair plate fl i. au outer 'fastener 2i having!- the side walls thereot provided with tongues Ql adapted to slide in the guideways EN). while the upper end o!" the inner `I'astener iS lu'aeed hy the projeet ionI Qt. 'l"he outer 'laotener is adapted to ride under the hase tlangfeandie1 provided with a transverse slot Bft to reeeive the hase tlaunje l() ol the rail it.
rl`he outer l'ant'ener is provided with a lonln'itudiual eentral opening` 2:, the outer end o't said openingl terminating; in a reeess 2G in the outer end ot' the Afastener. ln the openinol 25 there is rotatahly mrninted a tie rod Q7 having; the inner end thereo't' threaded to enter the aoeltet IS ol the hess t7. lhe onteiend o'l the tie rod QT han` a eollar QS within the reeese4 QG. also a triarnrularShaped head Q5) adapted to reeeive a Spanner wreneh 30. 'lo prevent the tie rod Q7 'troni lleeoniing aeeidenlally diaplaeed when the outer 'laS- tener io detaehed. Said tie rod has a eollar Si wliieh ie keyed or otherwise eonneeted to the tie rod` as at 22 adjaeent to the threaded end theree'l. rl`hi eollar eauses the outer tas tener and tie rod to move in unison lonitudinallv o'l the ehair plate 4, the tie rod 'freely rotating,l in the inner fastener, whereby the threaded end thereo'tI ean he Serewed into or out ot' the Soeltet 19.
From the 'foregoing it will he observed that the outer iimtener can he l hitted relatively to the enlaipement or inner ilastener,`
a transverse enlargement 7 providing a l ,eatV
consequently the base flanges 9 and 10 can be rmly gripped to retain the rail in engagement with the chair. Through the medium of the tie rod, the outer fastener can be repeatedly adjusted and when it is desired to remove the rail, the outer fastener can be easily and quickly detached from the enlargement. Vertical displacement of the outer fastener is prevented by the tongues 23 and lateral displacement is prevented by the walls 19 of the enlargement 7.
What l claim is zl. ln -a tie and rail fastener, the combination with a slab, of a chair secured thereto and adapted to support a rail, said chair comprising an enlargement having an overhanging flange adapted to engage the inner base flange ofthe rail and side Walls provided with guideways, an outer fastener slidably mounted upo-n said chair and provided with tongues engaging in the guideways of the enlargement, said outer fastener having a transverse slot formed therein to receive the outer base flange of the rail, and a tie rod rotatably mounted in said outer fastener and having` an inner screw threaded end thereof to engage in said enlargement.
2. In a tie and rail fastener, the combination with a slab, of a chair secured thereto and adapted to support a'rail, said chair comprising an enlargement having an overhanging fiange adapted to engage the inner base flange of the rail and side Walls provided with guideways, an outer fastener slieably mounted upon said chair and provided. with tongues engaging in the guideways of the enlargement, said outer fastener having a transverse slot formed therein to receive the outer base flange of the rail, a tie rod rotatably` mounted in said outer fastener and having an inner screw threaded end thereof to engage in said enlargement, a collar carried by said tie rod and adapted to retain said rod in engagement with said outer fastener, and a head carried by said tie rod and adapted to receive a Wrench to facilitate the rotating of said tie rod.
3. ln a tie and rail fastener, the combination with a metallic slab, of a chair secured thereto and providing a seat for a rail, an inwardly projecting flange carried by said chair and adapted to engage the inner base flange of the rail said chair having vertical side walls provided with guide ways and a boss provided with a screw threaded socket, an outer fastener slidably mounted in said chair and provided with tongues adapted to engage in the guide ways of said chair, said fastener having a transverse slot formed therein to receive the outer' base flange of the rail, a tie rod rotatably mounted in said outer fastener and adapted to have the inner end thereof engage in the socket of said chair, a collar mounted upon said tie rod and adapted to retain said tie rod in engagement with said fastener, and means to facilitate the rotating of said tie rod.
ln testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
