To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NICOLS HERNNDEZ, a citizen of the United States of Venezuela, residing at San Juan, in the county of San J uan, Porto Rico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sandals, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sandals and has for its principal object, to provide animproved sandal which is at one strong, durable and comfortable, as well' as light in weight, simple in construction, and inexpensive to manufacture.

Another object 'of the invention is to provide improved means for securing the up per of the sandal to the sole.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure l is a perspective view of the sandal, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing the upper folded to occupy a flat position, Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l, Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a planview of the sole, the upper of the sandal being removed, Fig. 6 is a similar view of the upper of the sandal, the same being removed from the sole. Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 7-7 of Fig. 5, and, Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section view taken on linev 8 8 of Fig. 5.

In the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, a sandal is shown as comprising a sole l, which may preferably be formedy of leather although any other suitable material may be employed. The sole l is formed in a suitable shapeyand size to fit the foot of the particular wearer. The sole l is provided upon its upper face with spaced inner and outer longitudinally disposed grooves 2, 3, 4 and 5, which do not extend entirely through the sole. The grooves 2 and 3 are connected at spaced intervals by transverse openings 6 and the grooves 4 and 5 are connected in a similar manner by spaced openings 7. The number of the transverse openings 6 and 7 and their distances apart may be greatly varied, to suit the occasion.

tion of which are attached side straps 9, having connection with a heel strap l0. The vamp 8 is woven so that the warp threads extend beyond the body portion of the vamp, to form fringes of loops ll. lhe heel strap l0 is woven in a similar manner and is provided at its ends with fringes of loops l2. The loops 11 carried upon the longitudinal edges of t-he vamp 8 are grouped in bunches corresponding in number to the transverse openings (S and inserted within these transverse openings to extend inwardly beyond the same. The loops 12 carried at the `ends of the heel strap l() are grouped in bunches corresponding in number to the transverse openings 7. These bunches are inserted through the transverse openings 7 to extend inwardly therebeyond. The numeral 13 designates a securing thread or cord which is run through the inner ends of the loops 1l and l2, thus positively preventing their removal from the transverse openings. The thread or cord is preferably continuous and extends through the sole l at points between the openings G and 7. The extreme forward end of the vamp 8 is not connected with the sole, whereby an open ing 14 is provided.

The vamp 8 is creased along lines 15 and 1G and may be folded upon itself on these lines to lie [lat upon the sole, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The heel strap is also creased upon lines 17 and 18, to be folded thereon for lying flat upon the sole 1. The side straps 9 and 10 are adapted to be disposed one upon the other.

From the description of the above referred to parts, it is obvious that novel means are provided for securely attaching the upper to the sole. The upper may be readily folded to occupy a flat position, whereby the sandal may be packed in a small space.

Having thus described my invention, I claim l. A sandal comprising a sole having transverse openings formed therein, an upper comprising a vamp and heel strap, said vamp and heel strap being provided with loops adapted for insertion within the transverse openings, and a securing cord for insertion within the loops to prevent their removal from the transverse openings.

2. A sandal` comprising a sole, a vamp attached thereto, a heel strap attached to the sole, side straps connecting the heel strap and vamp, and said vamp and heel strap being creased to allow the saine to be folded iat upon the sole.

3. A sandal comprising a sole having transverse spaced openings formed therein, an upper to be attached to the sole and comprising a vamp and heel strap, the vamp and heel strap being formedot a fabric having the Warp threads extended beyond the body portion of the same to forni fringes of loops, said loops being arranged in bunches and inserted Within the transverse openings, and
