Application filed September To all i a'iom it may concern:
lie it known that I. ililnuk l). lltunu, eiti- Zen of the United States, residing at l lau (llait'e, in the county of l lau t laire and State of /Viseonsin, have invented certain new and useful l nnn'ovements in Stumping-dltaohincs, of which the l'hllouiu}; is a speci titration.
This invention comprehemls certain new and useful improveutents in logging, yard-- lug and hoisting engines, and relates particularly to an improved machine of this character tlOSl llttl for use in clearing land, although it is appliaihle for other uses gene ally as above iznlicated.
The invention has for its primary ohject a simple, strong and dnrahle machine of this type which will he ellieieutin ope ation and capable of being easily controlled, and the invention consists in ceraiu constructions, arrangements and combinations ot the parts that it shall hereinafter tally descrihe and claim.
For a tall um'lerstauding of the invention, reference to he had to the tollowing description and accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a top plan view of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a. side elevation thereot; Fig. 53 is an enlarged detail sectional view of one of the clutches employed; Fig. l: is a side ele atiou looking from the side opposite to that illustrated in l ig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one part of the clutch illustrat'ed partly in Fig. 3: and, llig. (3 is a transverse detail sectional view through one of the other clutches.
corres iionding and like parts are re't'errtail to in the 'l'ollowing description and indicated in all the views of the aceompanying d awiugs hy the same rel'erenee characters.
The tramework of my improved machine may he of any desired construction, size,
and design so long as it sahserves its primary function at a strong and durable sup port for the operatingparts and it is designed also to support a prime mover which in the present instances is conveniently illustrated as a steam engine emhodying a holler 1. two cylinders 2 ar nnged on opposite sides of the hoilen steam chests I tor the respective cylinders, pitmeu l in the respective eylim'lers and valve stems 5 working in the respective steam ches the pitmen 1- are connected hy,wrist pins to eranlt disks 6 Specification of Letters Patent.

secured to the opposite ends at a laterally extending main driving shaft 7 which is jourualed in pillow hloeks or other hearings in the main. sidi and intermediate sills of the framework. The valve stems 5 are operatirely connected in any desired way to eccentrics secured to the shaft 7.
There are two loose gear wheels on the shaft T. one designated is larger than the other wheel. designated 9. The wheel meshes with a relatively small pinion l and the gear wheel 9 meshes with a relatively large gear wheel ill. The pinion l0 and wheel ll are hoth tast on a transversely ex teruling counter shalt l2 journaled in the framework as best illustrated in Fig. 1. winding drum 13 is also mounted on the cminterslm'tt 12 being loose thereon and is designed to he engaged with the gear wheel ll. by any desired (clutch, such as that indicated at 1 in Fig. and part; of which is also shown in Fig. 1. The drum 1.3 is moved into engagement with its driving gear wheel ll by means o'l, a'st *am actuated piston rod 15, hut as the specific eonstruotiou oil the clutch For the drums and actuating mechanism there For form no part ot my present invention, T have deemed it unnee; essary to descrihe such parts in tall. Meshing with the pinion is a gear wheel 16 secured fast on another actuating shalt 17 journaled in the 'l'ramework, and a pinion l8 also secured fast on said shaft. said pinion meshing witl a relatively large gear wheel 19 fast on another counter shaft 20 journaled in the f'amework. On this last named shaft, there are two drums, one of which is designated 21. and the other 22, nch ot' these drums heing loose on the shaft. The drum 21. is coupled to the shaft 20 through a clutch coming against: or into the gear wheel '12), the clutch heing operated by a piston rod 23. and the drum $32 is connected to the shaft J0 by an actuating piston rod Qlwhich moves the drum, or the clutch her 26 .tast on said shalt. It will of course he understood that; all ot these clutches are ope ated by steam pressure working against opposite taees ot' the pistons (not shown) in the steam cylinders the steam 'heing supplied to the cylinders in any desired way.
As above stated, both of the gear wheels 8 and 9 are mounted tree or loose on the shaft 7. They are designed to he alternately coupled to the shaft and for this therco't into engagement with a clutch meIn-.
