SKIRT-MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 30, 1910. Serial No. 569,753.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY O. J oHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oroville, in the county of Butte and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Markers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
p This invention relates to improvements in skirt markers.
One object of the invention is to provide a skirt marker having a platform adapted to be adjusted for supporting a person at the desired elevation for marking a skirt whereby the length of the latter may be accurately indicated. Another object is to provide a skirt marker having means whereby the lower end of the skirt may be securely held while being marked thus preventing any movement of the person from interfering with the accurate marking of the skirt.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the append ed claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a side view of a skirt marker constructed in accordance with my invention and showing in dotted lines a skirt arranged thereon in posit-ion for marking; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the marker; Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view; and, Fig. 4 is an en larged detail sectional view through the adjusting mechanism of the skirt clamping ring.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, I provide a supporting base 1 which may be of any suitable construction and which is here shown as of a circular hollow form having arranged'in its upper surface a centrally disposed upwardly proj ecting boss 2 provided with a vertically disposed threaded passage 3. Arranged above the base 1 is a circular platform 4 adapted to support the person having on the skirt to be marked. The platform 4 is adjustably supported at the desired distance above the base 1 by means of a supporting screw 5 which has a threaded engagement with the boss 2 of the base.
Arranged above the base 1 is a skirt clamping mechanism comprising an inner clamping ring or band 6 which is secured to or formed integral with the upper ends of a series of supporting standards 7 the lower ends of which are secured to or formed integral with an annular base engaging flange 8 which is secured to the upper side of the base by bolts or other suitable fastening means. The outer member of the skirt clamping mechanism comprises an open spring metal ring or band 9 which is arranged around the inner ring 6 and is sup ported in position by a series of spring arms 10 the lower ends of which are bolted or otherwise secured to the flange 8. The upper ends of the arms 10 have formed thereon grooved lugs 11 which are slidably engaged with an annular series of horizontal slots 12 formed in the spring ring 9 as shown.
The outer spring ring 9. of the clamping mechanism is adapted to be contracted or drawn into operative engagement with the inner clamping ring 6 by means of a suitable contracting mechanism comprising a longitudinally slotted connecting plate 13 one edge of the slot therein being provided with a series of rack teeth 14: which are adapted to be engaged by a pinion 15 which is revolubly mounted on the adjacent end of the ring 9 and is provided with an operating knob or handle 16 whereby when the pinion is turned in one direction or the other the connecting plate will be shifted in one direction or the other thus expanding or contracting the outer skirt marking ring to release or to clamp the lower edge of the skirt into engagement with the inner ring thus.
firmly holding said end while the skirt is marked through the annular slots 12, formed in the outer ring 9. In orderto insure a tight frictional engagement between the rings and the end of the skirt the inner stationary ring is preferably provided on its outer side with a felt facing strip 17.
In order to adjust the supporting platform 4 to bring the end of the skirt at the proper position between the clamping rings for marking the skirt at the desired point the platform is revolved in one direction or the other thereby screwing the same upwardly or downwardly to the desired position. After the platform has been thus adjusted the latter is held against further rotary movement by a stop bolt 18 which is slidably mounted in a socket 19 formed in one side of the platform. The bolt is adapted to be projected and retracted to operative and inoperative positions by means of a lug or operating knob 20 secured thereto and projecting upwardly through a slot 21 formed in the upper side of the platform as shown. (On the outer end of the bolt 18 is formed a stop finger 22 which is adapted to be engaged with the vertical slots 23 one of. which is formed in each of the ring supporting standards 7 When the finger 22 is thus engaged with one of the slots 23 the platform will be held against rotary movement and thus secured in its adjusted position. In order to indicate the height in inches to which the platform has been adjusted one of the standards 7 is provided with a scale of inches 24 arranged thereon as shown. By providing the spring arms 10 the spring clamping ring 9 will be expanded at a uniform distance from the inner ring when the outer ring is opened by the expanding mechanism hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may 'be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what i I claim is:
1. In a skirt marker, a base, a platform revolubly and adjustably mounted on said base, means to hold said platform in its adjusted positions, a pair of skirt clamping rings comprising an inner stationary ring rigidly secured to said base, an expansible ring arranged around said inner ring, means to yieldingly support said ring on said base, and an expanding and contracting mechanism connected with the ends of said expansible ring whereby said ends are drawn together or forced apart to engage and disengage said ring with said inner stationary ring.
2. In a skirt marker a base, a boss arranged in the center thereof, said boss having a threaded passage, a platform having secured thereto a screw adapted to engage the threaded passage in said boss whereby said platform may be screwed up or down to adjust the same at the desired position above said base, an inner skirt clamping ring arranged around said platform, and secured at a suitable elevation to said base, an,
outer clamping ring having formed therein an annular series of slots, spring supporting arms secured to said base having a sliding connect-ion with said slotted outer ring, and an expanding and contracting mechanism secured to the opposite ends of said outer ring whereby said ends are drawn together to clamp the end of the skirt between said ring and said stationary ring whereby the clamped end of the skirt may be marked through the slots formed in said outer ring.
3. In a skirt marker-a base, a platform revolubly mounted thereon having a revoluble engagement therewith whereby said platform is raised or lowered, an inner clamping ,band arranged above said base and around said platform, a series of slotted standards secured to said base and adapted to support said ring in suitable position above the latter, an outer longitudinally slotted open clamping ring arranged around said inner stationary ring, a series of spring arms loosely engaged with and adapted to support said outer ring in position to be engaged with said inner ring, a slotted connecting plate secured to one end of said open outer ring, a series of rack teeth formed in one edge of the slot in said plate, a pinion revolubly mounted on the other end of said outer open ring and adapted to engage said rack teeth, an operating knob connected to said pinion whereby the latter is revolved in said slot and engaged with said rack teeth whereby the outer ring is contracted and expanded to secure the lower end of the skirt while being marked, means to inclicate the position to which said platform is adjusted, and a locking bolt slidably mounted in the platform and adapted to be engaged with the slotted supporting standards of the inner clamping ring whereby the platform is secured in its adjusted position.
