Means are provided for feeding one tack from the magazine to the head member 4 while restraining the remaining tacks within the magazine and said means are further shown constructed and arranged for actuation by the relative movement of the magazine and the head member. rIhe form thereof shown herein comprises an escapement member 10 which is movably mounted in a suitable manner, as on a pivot 11. Said escapement member 10 is shown provided with fingers 12 and 13'arranged transversely of the runway of the magazine. It is further shown as being normally impelled to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 by suitable means, such as the spring 14, the linger 13 serving to restrain the tacks in the magazine runway. Means for moving it transversely of the magazine are pro-vided when the magazine and the head member are in position for delivering a tack to the head member. For this purpose there is provided in the present embodiment a cam face 15 fixed relatively to the escapement member 10 so as to be engaged and moved by the head member 4 as it swings toward the magazine. During this movement the finger 13 passes out of engagement with the lower tack, and the finger 12 passes between this tack and the next adjacent o-ne, thus restraining the remaining tacks within the magazine, as shown in Fig. 5, while the lowermost tack is free to move away with the member 4. As the head member 4 swings or moves again toward the position shown in Fig. 1, carrying the rst tack with it, the escapement member 10, under the impulsion of its spring 14, resumes its former position, the finger 12 passing out of alinement with the icoV CTT
magazine runway, the end tack of the magazine being now supported upon the finger 13, in position for a repetition of the opert ation just described.
A suitable device is provided for permitting the tacks to be fed into the magazine -5 and for then preventing their coming out.
As shown herein it comprises a leaf spring 16 at the end of the runway of the magazine 5, said spring being constructed to yield for the feeding in of the tacks and then standing across the runway to prevent their coming out.
In one of its aspects the invention provides in connection with a handle and a movable head or head member, means con tiguous to the hand as Yit grasps the handle for positively holding the head in driving position. In the illustrated embodiment said means is combined with means for moving the head member 4c to and fro between the receiving and driving positions for the tack. As previously stated, the head member 4: is pivotally mounted upon the member 3. The form of such means shown in the drawings comprises a rod 17 connected to the head member L1 and passing within the handle having a bearing therein at 18. A finger piece 19 is shown Xed upon the rod 17 and acting against this is also shown a suitable spring 20. The finger piece 19 is closely contiguous to the fingers of the hand grasping the handle, anda slight pressure of a finger on the piece 19 will actuate the head 1 durving the feeding operation, and a rm hold upon the handle will cause the fingers, by pressure on the opposite side of the piece 19, to hold the head member 4 securely in driving position while the tack is being driven.

The manner of. using and operating, as well as the construct-ion of, the present embodiment will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be further understood that said embodiment realizes the objects of invention and the advantages herein set forth together with other objects and advantages.
r1What l do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A hammer, including in combination, a hollow handle, a hollow head section rigidly connected therewith, tack storing means situated in the handle, a driving member pivoted near one end in the hollow head and adapted to be swung into the hollow handle in operative relation to the tack storing means, an actuating rod extending longitudinally within the hollow handle with its forward end jointed to the driving member below its pivotal axis, whereby when the rod is drawn rearwardly the driving member will be swung rearwardly to take a tack from the storing means, and means acting on the rod and serving to swing the driving member forwardly to driving position.
