To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Board- Sets and Nail-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined board set and nail driver.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described to be used in the construction of tongue and grooved board walls, ceiling, flooring and like construction for the purpose of forcing the boards close together as well as driving the securing nails therein without scarring the boards. In constructing walls, etc., of this character the securing nails are usually driven diagonally through the board tongue and into the supporting framework with a hammer and in so doing the board and tongue are scarred and disfigured. It is also difficult to force one board up closely against the adjacent one and it is the object of this device to overcome this difliculty as well as to prevent the scarring of the board.
With the above and other objects in view my invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as applied in the accomplishment of its purpose. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof taken on the line a-a of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof and Fig. 4 is an edge viiew thereof looking toward the operative e ge.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral 5' refers to the body portion of the device which is an oblong member, preferably constructed of steel and having a handle 6 integral therewith and composed of the same metal. This handle has aslight inclination to the plane of the body portion, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the free end thereof will be readily accessible to the stroke of the driving implement. The driving edge of the body portion has two longitudinal laterally projecting lips, 7 and 8 which form a slot 9 therebetween, for the reception of the tongue 10 of the board, as shown in Fig. 1.
.The'board 11 is first placed in position and the nail 12 is driven diagonally through the tongue and the board proper, with a hammer, allowing the nail head to project some distance therefrom so as to obviate the liability of scarring the board. The implement is then placed upon the framework 13 and against the board edge so that the groove 9 thereof will receive the tongue 10, of the board, and the central ortion of the under face of the upper lip is upwardly beveled, as at 14, so as to insure the engagement of said lip over the nail head and not against the side thereof. The under side of body portion 5 is perfectly flat so as to rest firmly on the framework and the device is then driven against the board by the successive strokes of a hammer or other driving implement, against the free end of handle 6 until board 11 is forced closely against its adjacent board and the nail 12 is driven in until its head is buried in the tongue so that it is flush with the upper surface thereof. Both of these results are attained by the use of this implement without any scarring or disfigurement of the board.
What I claim is v 1. A device of the character described composed of a body portion, and longitudinal lips carried by one side thereof and projecting therefrom so as to form a groove therebetween, the central portion of the under side of the upper lip being upwardly beveled, and a handle projecting from the side of said member opposite said lips.
2. A device of the character described including a body portion, two longitudinal lips projecting laterally from one side thereof so as to form a groove therebetween, the central portion of the under side of the upper lip being provided with a seat, and a handle carried by the member and pro ecting from the side thereof opposite the lips, said handle being inclined to the plane of the lips.
