To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMEs S. MoKnE, a citizen of the United States, residinrr at Marshall, in the county of Saline and gtate of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pile-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in pile supporters, comprehending specifically a roll of absorbent cotton adapted to be impregnated with a suitable medicament.
The main object of the present invention is the production of a pile supporter made up of an appropriately sized strip of absorbent cotton, impregnated with a medicament for a portion of its length, and rolled into solid cylindrical shape for insertion in the anal canal.
The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of a strip of absorbent cotton from which the pile supporter is formed, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the strip in rolled form, Fig. 3 is an elevation of the completed article.
In forming the pile supporter I first provide a strip 1 of absorbent material, such as absorbent cotton, and impregnate the strip for the greater portion of its length with a suitable medicament, dividing the strip into a treated portion 2 and a plain portion 3. After treatment the strip 1 is rolled into a more or less compact form, as at a Fig. 2, the size of the strip 1 being such, of course, as to provide a roll of the proper size for use.
The use of the medicament throughout a portion only of the strip will stifien that portion to provide the desired rigidity for insertion, the remaining portion 3 of the strip serving as a gripping portion for the insertion and withdrawal of the supporter, and being free of medicament to avoid undesired rigidity. The portion 3 is, therefore, entirely flexible to avoid discomfort to the wearer and also avoiding the adhesive contacts between said projecting portion and the skin of the wearer which would naturally result if the entire strip were medicated. As an additional securing means I prefer to form diametrically opposing notches 5 in the completed roll at the juncture of the medicated and non-medicated portions,
thereby providing for the gripping of the mouth of the rectum and preventing accidental displacement of the supporter when in place.
The use of the supporter will be obvious, it being understood that the medicament imparts sufficient rigidity to the upper portion of the device to provide for its convenient introduction into the anal canal beyond the outer and inner sphincter muscles. The heat of the body dissolves the medicament and directs it to the diseased portion. The comparatively soft and yielding character of the supporter avoids irritation and absolutely prevents protruding or slipping of the pile. The use of the notches 5 insures the retention of the supporter in place against accidental displacement and thereby provides an effective support and incidentally ameans of medication.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
A pile supporter comprising a body formed of a series of convolute layers disposed in contact, the relatively inner and outer surface of each layer having a direct application of medicament for a portion of its length, the outer surface of the outer layer being free of medicament for a portion of its length to form a handle, the outer surface of the outer layer at the juncture of the medicated and non-medicated portions being cut away to provide an annular notch.
