UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. BRACI-IER, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
MOTOR-CYCLE TANDEM ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM F. BRAoHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Jose, county of Santa Clara, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor-Cycle Tandem Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in motor cycle tandem attachments, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character specified, by means of which the ordinary single passenger motor cycle may be converted into a twopassenger vehicle with the seats tandem without any changes in the structure of the vehicle itself. Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the detached improvement, and, Fig. 2 is a side view of a motor cycle with the improvement in place.
The embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, consists of a yoke comprising a body portion 1, and arms 2, and supporting a seat 3, together with means for attaching the yoke to the frame 4 of the motor cycle.
The seat 3 is connected to one end of a seat post 5, in the usual manner, and the seat post is provided at the other end with a bearing ring 6, encircling the body 1 of the yoke, and secured to the said body in any suitable manner, as, for instance, by brazing or soldering.
A plate 7 is slidably connected with each of the arms of the yoke. Each plate is provided at each of its ends with a laterally extending lug 8, and each lug is provided with a bearing 9 to receive the arm. The body portion of each plate is on the inner side of the arm, and each plate is provided near its lower end with an opening 10.
A coil spring 11 encircles each arm of the yoke below the uppermost lug 8, and a collar 12 is arranged on the arm intermediate the lugs 8, and is held in adjusted position by a set screw 13. The lower end of the spring is secured to the collar, and the upper end is secured to the under face of the lug. Another coil spring 14, of lesser length than the spring 11, encircles each arm below the lowermost lug 8, and a collar 15 is slidable on the arm below the spring. The collar is held in adjusted position by a set screw 16,

and the spring rests on the collar and bears against the lower face of the lug.
An arm 17 is secured at one end at 18, to each of the plates 7, near the upper end of the plate, and near its opposite end each arm is provided with a transverse groove 19. A strap 20 provided with a transverse groove 21, is detachably connected with the end of the plate by screws 22. The grooves 19 and 21 cooperate to form an opening for receiv ing one arm of the rear fork 23 of the frame of the cycle, and the arm and strap form a sectional bearing which may be detachably connected with the fork. The arms 17 are connected intermediate their ends by a yoke, the arms 24 of which are connected with the respective arms 17, by rivets 25. A split ring 26 is rigidly connected with a post 27, on the body portion 28 of the yoke, and a handle bar 29 is held in the ring, by means of a screw 30, engaging the ends 31 of the ring. A foot support or rest 33 is arranged on each arm 2 below the plate, each rest consisting of a plate having a hub 34 encircling the arm, and the outer end of the plate is upturned, as shown at 35. The rests are oppositely arranged, both extending outwardly, and each is held in place by a collar 36, encircling the arm below the rest, and held in adjusted position by a set screw 37. The attachment is connected to the cycle, with the arms 2 of the yoke astride the rear wheel 38. The handle bar supporting yoke 2428 also rests astride the wheel, and the sectional bearing of each of the arms 17 is connected to the adjacent arm 23 of the rear fork. The material of the yoke 12 is sufliciently resilient to permit the arms to spread enough to en-, gage the axle ends with the openings, 10 and the attachment is supported on the axle ends and by the arms 17.
The foot rests 33 may be moved toward or from the seat 3, to accommodate riders of various heights, and the tensions of the supporting springs 11 and 14, may be Varied to suit the weight of the rider. To adjust the foot rest, the screw 37 is loosened, and the collar 36 and rest 33 are moved up or down on the arm. When in the proper position, the screw 37 is tightened to hold the collar rigid. The tension of the springs 11 and 14 is varied by raising or lowering the collars 12 and 15, respectively. The rigid connection of the arms 17 with the plates, holds the frame rigidly connected with the frame of the cycle.
The attaclnnent is simple and inexpensive, and may be easily attached and detached. No change is necessary in the construction of the cycle, and the device cannot get out of order. To remove the attachment, the bearings are loosened from the arms of the rear fork, and the arms 2 of the yoke are sprung apart slightly to disengage the axle ends from the openings 10.
