To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARCUS MAsHBIR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State 'of New York, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Sewing-Machine Finger-Guards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates more particularly to a finger guard to prevent injury to the operators lingers by the machine needle or needles. v

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and elicient device or attachment adapted to be operativelyconnected to the presser foot or presser foot bar of a sewing machine in such a way that the lingers of the operator cannot possibly come in contact with the needle or needles of the machine as the same is operated, and at the same time permit the movements of the l needle to be seen in order that the quality of the stitch and thestraightness of the seam may be carefully watched.

'A further object of the invention is t9 provide a device which is adapted for/use in connection with various forms of sewing machines employing one or a'number of needles.

With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with'reference to the ,accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the tion.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the presser floot. Fig. 3 shows a slightly different means for holding the device to the presser foot bar.

\ The machine head 10 may b provided claims at the end of the descripwith the usual form of presser foot bar 11 on the lower end of which is held the presser foot 12 having the usual slot and opening, as 13, for the reciprocatory movement of the needle 14, and said needle is held to the needle bar 15, all of which may be of the usual or of any referred construction and operated in any esired way.

The device or guard 16 is provided with a substantially U-shaped body 17 one leg of which has its end, as 18, held in a slot '19 in the presser foot, and secured to orformed as a part of the body 16 inan arm 19, one end of which, as 20, is arranged at an angle to the fastening part 21 so as to hold the body 16 properly and adjacent to the needle 14, and sald arm 19a is provided with a slot 22 through which a screw 23 passes to permit adjustment of said arm. A screw 23 passes through t-he slot 22 and is held to the .end of. abar 24, and this bar issupported 1n a cllp or bracket 25 which is held 'to the. bar 11 by a screw 26 or otherwise. As thus constructed the guard or device is movable with the presser foot and bar and may be adjusted yrelatively to the foot, though it will be understood that the end 18 of the Patented Aug. 15, 1911,.

guard need not be made to fit into a slot or presser foot if delclose enough together to prevent the lingers of the operator from passing throu h the slot between the legs of the body, but in case the machine employs a number of needles, as is sometimes the case, the legs Awill thus be placed farther apart, and to prevent the fingers from entering the space between the legs is a glass or other plate 27.

This plate 27 may be of any suitable transparent material and is held tothe body 16 1n any desired way and will permit the working of the needle and the quality of the stitches and the straightness of the seam being made to be readily seen.

In Fig. 3the guard is entirely independent of the presser foot otherwise the guard and its supporting arm is substantially the same as in Fig. 1. In this construction the arm 19a has the slot 22 by which the guard may be adjusted and has a screw 28 passing -through the slot, and said screw engagesa bar or -post 29 extending outward from a sleeve 30 which fits about the presser foot bar 11, the said sleeve being secured tofsaid bar by means of a screw 3'1.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and eicient guard is provided which will protect the hands of the operator and at the saine time permit the quality of the stitches and the nature of the seam to bey readily seen at allv times; thaty said guard may be variously vconstructed and held and may be movable with the presser foot; and that said guard is ladapted for use in connection with various forms ofmachines, and
