Lett-ers Patent .Na 100,081', dated-February 22, 1870.
' IMPROVEMENT IN WINDMILLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. making part of the sama other details of construction, which will be more t'ully explained hereinafter.
In the drawingsv Figui-e1 is a side'elevation of myinvention;
Figures 2 and 3, perspective views of portions de.- tached and Figure 4, a front elevation, with the fan removed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a vertical standard, to whih are securely attached the hearings ot' the revolving cylinder A', on the upper end ot" which is located the metal head a, which is provided with projectionsa1 ai'in which are tle bearings ot' the crank-shalt I5,l
To the head a. are attached the strips b, one on each side., between the rear ends of which is -thefan b.
Between the fanb' and the head a is pivoted Athe elbow-lever O, winch is provided at its upperendwith the connecting-rod O',and at the lower and inner end with .the roller c.
The bearings of the cylinder A' have projections c c", in which are orifices ior the vertical.connecting-rod c2 to pass through.
The rod c? isattached at its upper end to the circutar horizontal collars D D, which surround the cylinder A near the upper end thereof, and are suiiiciently far apart to .allow the roller c to pass between them', thus tbl-ming a circular' track therefor.
` zlrepresents a lever, to which thelower end of the rod c2 is connected by an arm d1, while the lever d is pivoted to the standard at one side of the point of at-.
taclnnent of the-arm d, and lwhen operated, raises and lowers the rod with the collars D D which operate the elbow-lever G-and connecting-rodi?.
-The latter is lprovided with a clutch, d2, which is attached to the sliding collar E on the shaft B;
The fan-wheel is constructed with the spokes or' braces e, attached to the sockets e', which are rigidly attached to the shaft B.
F F represent concentric rings of metal, which are suitably attached to' the spokes e, and are sufliciently far apart to admit the-fans f between them,whichlat ler,y are pivoted so as to turn freely.
f.' 'represents au additional movable ring, beside the ring F, to which, also, the innerendsjof the fans are pivoted, thus giving each fan two bearings on the inner ends.
The ring f' is connected with the sliding collar E by means ot' the crank-levers H, which are two in. ynumber,'and work in the sockets h It on the spokes e,
and by the rods h. h', which pass from thc inner ends otf the cranks to the collar. Each end of the levers H is provided with a crank. That at the outer end projects fartherii'om the spokes than at the inner, and is pivoted to the ring f'. Y
I represents the regulating-ian, the shank of which is pivoted upon a projection, i, near thel head a, and its inner end is attached 'by a chain or other suitable method to the bell-.crank lever 'i1,\v.hich is connected tothe elbow-lever C by the strip di.
rlhe connecting-rod C is attached to the collar E by the ends d2, one on each side, which are bentdownward, and provided with .oriiices through which pass. vthe ends of the half circles :1; x,'iig. 4, which surround the collar, being itted in an annular groove of the same.
.ihe operation. of my invention is as follows The ians, being set 'in motion, turn the crank-shaft B, and impart lnot'on by any' suitable connection to the mechanism to be operated. The regulation oi' the fans is etfected bythe regulating-tim I, which, when swung-inwardfraises the elbow-lever 0, and draws back the. connecting-rod G' and collar E, which will turn the crank-lever 1I in such manner as to open thelfans. 1f the regulating-Ian should not prove sufficient, the lever d1 and connecting-rod c2 are operated,
which,.- when raised,i`orce the collars D D up, and
with them the lever C, which produces the saine .cifect as before described. 'I
In case two rows of vfans are employed, as shown in. g. 3. three stationary rings are used, with an additional movable ring, beside the center one, to which the vfans arev pivoteihas in the former case, exceptthose of theinner row, which arc pvoted at the outer instead oi' thc inner ends. y A
Having thus fully described my invention,
' VVhat-l dlaimas new, and desire to-sec-ure by Letters Patent ofthe'United States, is-f- 1. The ring lf', in combination with the fans f, cranklevers H', rods ItI It', and collar E, substantially as described.'
2. 'Ihe regulating-fan 1,3 in combination with the bell-crank lever il, and elbow-lever O, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The rod O, I ttached lto the. collar E, constructed substan tiallyoi'the bent' ends cl2, and semicircular pieces l :n x, substantially as described.
4. IlJhe rods c?, operated by the lever Z,'in combina day of July, 1869. p
