Specification of Letters Patent. .Patented Aug. 15,1911.
Application filed May 3,1910. Serial No. 559,187
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL JAenNBsno, a citizen ofGermany. and a resident of Dusseldorf, Germany. have invented a new and Improved Machine for AttachingReinfmc.
ing-Slips to Box-Covering Strips, of which the following a specification.
This invention relates to a machine 0 novel construction for attaching spaced slips to strips adapted for covering boxes orsimilar articles. The slips are so posi tioned that they will constitute reinforcements for the corners of the box to which they are attached simultaneously with the strips.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a plan of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a side view thereof; Fig. 2 a detail of the plunger and Fig. 3 a front elevation of the main part of the machine.
The strip to be'reinforced is fed over a table a, on which are mounted a plurality of standards Z), the number of which cor responds to the number of reinforcing slips to be secured to the'paper or other strip The strip feeding means comprise essentially a feed dog 10 pivoted to upwardly extending arms of a slide 11 which is arranged below strip m. Dog 10 is by link 12, and sha t- 13 connected to a lever 14: which receives oscillative movement from a cam disk 15 by a rod 16 all beingso constructed that during the advance of the dog, the latter clamps strip on to the likewise advancing slide, thereby taking the strip along, while upon the receding movement of the clog, the latter is raised ofi the strip.
To standards I) are pivoted kiiives 0 nor mally raised by springs d. Each standard is further provided with an angular vertically movable plunger 6 headed at its lower end as at f. Headsf are padded or felted as at h and have flanges 9 arranged .in the path of knives 0.
' tween lever 0 and rod 8.
lever 0 is slottd'as at t for pivot-a1 attachment of upper end of a rod 5, the lower end of which is connected to an arm uturning on shaft 1; and carrying a pawl w. "Upon shaft -v is further mounted a ratchet, wheel :0 and a feed roller 7' composed of metal,
rubber or other material. Strip m is intermlttently advanced over table a, and is by suitable gumming means coated on itsupper side with an adhesive before it passes beneath standards I); Thereinforcing slips composed of paper, linen or other material are fed overtable a, inthe form of tapes y at right angles to strips m, butsomewhat above the same. Tapes 2 are gummed and are wound on reels 2, from which they are fed beneath rollers 7', across strip m. \Vhen the ends of tapes g have arrived .over strip m, plungers e are lowered byca-m 1", so that flanges 9 will depress knives 0 and cause the same to sever the superposed sections 7; of tapes y. The heads f with the moistened pads 72., will then bear upon the severed slips Z) and press them upon the gummed surface of strip m, so that they are pasted to the stripsand are simultaneously moistened on the upper gummed side.
During the descent Of plunger e, rod 8 will advance pawl w over the teeth of ratchet wheel as, withouttaking said wheel along. During the upstroke of'the plunger,
pawl '20 will however turn wheel :0 to re-' volve feed rollers j, andthus intermittently advance strip 11 the length of the feed being regulable by the adjustable connection be- The reinforced strips m are Wound around a box and pasted thereto together with the slips, the adhesion of the latter to the box being rendered possible by the prior moistening of the gummed sides of the slips. The standards a should be adjustable upon table a, so that the slips may be spaced to conform to various sizes of boxes.
I claim:
1'. A device of the character described, comprising a table, means for feeding an adhesive-covered strip across the same, means for feeding. a slip at right angles over the strip, said slip having a dry adhesive applied to its upper side, means for pasting the lower side of the slip to the strip and for simultaneously moistening the adhesive on the upper side of the slip.
2. A device of the character described,
comprising a table, means for feeding an adhesive-covered strip across the same, .sa'me, means for Carrying a tape across the 'means for feeding a table, means for feeding a strip overthe hesive applied to its upper side, means for copies of thls petent may be obtained for a slip at right angles strip, a plunger adapted to be projected over the strip, said slip having a dry adover the overlapping part of the tape, a pad I carried by'the plunger, means for moistensevering the projecting end of the slip, i ing the pad, and'a knifeactuated by the Inefims 'fof1 pasting tlae :lEOV\'e1".Sld1e of said plunger. en to t e strip an or simu taneousy v moistem'ng the adhesive on'the upper. side I JA of said end.-
