IMPROVED-SERIES OI' DIES POR PORNIING THE HEADS OI' .KING-BOLTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letter-ll Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT It. MiLLER, of Plantsville, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and improved Dies for Forming King-Bolts for Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this y specification, in which- Figure l represents the rough king-bolt,ufter being split, and before being placed vin the die. ff*
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the die by which the clip-arms ofthe bolt are formed.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved sct of dies, by means ot which the clip-arms and wings of king-bolts may be quickly, conveniently, and accurately formed; and
It consists in the series of dies constructed and operating as here-inaiter more fully described.
A represents the die by which the clip-arms are formed.
The die A is formed with a round hole, a, in its center, to receive the end of the round rod from which the upper part ot' the bolt is to be formed.
From opposite sides of the central hole al semicylindrical grooves a2 are formed, extending out for a suitable distance.
One end of therod-from which the king-bolt is to be formed is split for about one. and a half or two inches, and the parts are turned down to about at rightaugles with the body of the said rod. -Thisna'turally forms a collection or thickening of metals at the angles or bends.
The rod thus prepared is then placed in the die A, and struck with a drop, forming the clip-arms, and
forcing the surplus metal into the ring-like cavity a of the die A, around the hole a.
The partially-formed bolt is then removed from the die A, and placed across the die B, the arms resting on the projections b.
The die B is formed with a hole, b1, in its center, to' receive the'part of the bolt which is to form the upper part or spindle. Frein the opposite sides of -the hole b1, haltlrouud grooves b2 lead out for sucient distances. Upon the upper side of the die B, upon the opposite sides ofthe hole b, arev formed upwardlyprojecting lugs or flanges b4, upon the inner side of which are formed' half-round grooves, to receive the shoulders ot' the clip-arms of the bolt, and give them the proper bend or form while the wings are being formed in the grooves 7)",

I wish it to be understood that l do not claim either of the dies herein described separately; but having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The series of dies A, B,`and C, for forming the cliparms and wings ofthe lower ends of king-bolts for wagons, said dies being constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
