AUTOMATIC SAFETY GAGE-COCK.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JULIAN L. Srunns, a citizen of the United States, residing in Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Safety Gage-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to gage cocks for locomotives, and steam boilers in general, and more particularly to a safety check valve to be used in connection with the gage cock for the purpose of preventing the escape of steam from the boiler in case the gage cock valve is removed for any purpose,
or in case the said gage cock should be broken olf flush with the head of the boiler.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gage cock with a safety check valve, so that the seat of the gage cock can be r'e-' ground at any time desired, without letting down the steam pressure in the boiler, and a still. further object is to provide for the intake of the water, and steam at the bottom of the valve, instead of the end or top, and whereby clogging by scum or dirt is avoided, and it is also an object of this invention to provide a packing for the gage cock valve steam, so arranged as to prevent any grit coming in contact with the threads of said stem.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a valve casing 1, which is provided with the usual central chamber 2, from which depends the-discharge or drip pipe 8. The

A threaded plug 8, closed at its outer end is screwed into the inner end of the casing 1, this plug 8 having a central bore opening at .the forward end for the purpose of receiving the flattened guide stem 9 which carries the check valve 7. This plug 8 constructed with openings 10, upon its under side, and which lead into the central bore, and through .which steam and water pass into the casing 1, and around the valve 7, when the said valve is opened or moved back from its seat.
The central chamber 2 has the usual et cock seat 2 which is produced at the orward or outer end of the bore 11, which extends from the central chamber to the rear portion of the casing and through vwhich steam and water pass, after passing the valve 7. 13 indicates the pet cock valve stein having the taperod end 13, which seats against the seat 2 for the purpose of cutting ott' the flow of steam or water. The forward portion ofthe stem is threaded, as shown at 14, and is provided with the usual construction of hand-wheel 15. .lhe'threaded portion of .the stem works through a stulting box 16, said stuffing boX being screwed upon the threaded forward end of the casing, and this stutling box, it will be noted, is of dif ferent internal diameters, thereby providing an interior shoulder 16, against which a packing ring 17 rests, said packing ring being held between the shoulder 16 and the end of the pet cock casing, and by means of this construction the valve stem can be thor oughly packed, and all danger'of grit, or any other substance reaching the stem is entirely avoided, and furthermore, the said valve stem can be withdrawn, and inserted again, as often as desired, without repacking, or other inconvenience.
