CLAMPING DEVICE FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTIONS.

Be it known that I, CHARLES P. TRIMBLE, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamping Devices for Building Constructions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a clamping device for building columns and other like con-,
structions, and has special reference to such a device for use in concrete and other similar work. a
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efficient device for this class of work which is adjustable for use in constructions of different shapes and sizes, Will enable the rapid and easy assembling and removal of the same, and if desired, will avoid the loss of time and expense resulting from the separation or loss of the parts of the same.
My invention consists, generally stated,in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved clamping device, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a portion of a column form with my improved clamp applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 22 Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view partly in section of one of the clamps. Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a view, similar to Fig. 1, showing another form of the clamp.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing, a represents the forms for forming a square column, which are generally composed of a lagging Specification of Letters Patent.

of boards and set vertically to form the centering, and between which the concrete is filled in to form the column. In this lagging the boards are set vertically and such lagging on each of its four sides are held together by battens b placed at suitable intervals, while each side of the centering is formed preferably before erection by nailing the battens to such boards in order to tie the latter together. The four sides of the centering forms a are held together by the angular clamps 1, each of which is at the corner of such form and extends along the same, so that a bolt 2 can be connected to and from clamp to clamp and thus form complete ties for inclosing such forms by thus being formed of four clamps and four bolts, while such a tie is shown at each batten Z), although it will be understood that only as many ties will be used as required and that the battens and ties will be spaced on the form as required according to the size and design of the structure.
Each of the clamps 1 consists of an angle plate having the two sides 3, which are preferably of channel-shape and terminate in the flanged enlargements or lugs 4 at the ends of same, while the channel flanges 5 extend from such enlargements and are preferably enlarged at the corners of the plates, as at 6, to strengthen the same. Within each of the enlarged ends 4 on the clamp 1 is the slot 7 which extends longitudinally of such ends and clamps, and a recess 7 is formed by the two channel sides 3 and the overlapping portions 7 on the sides of the enlarged ends 4 and is adapted to form a seat for a flat sided nut as hereinafter described.
The bolts 2 are each provided with a threaded portion 8 at each end of the same, with the threads of the one end portion formed in an opposite direction from those on the other end portion for the right and left hand screw connection. Both threaded portions 8 of the bolts 2 are provided with square fiat sided nuts 8 thereon, for fitting into the recesses 7 on opposite clamps l. Preferably between the threaded portions 8 and centrally of the bolt 2 is the enlarged portion 9, which is preferably of nut shape, so as to provide for flat sides thereon and has two holes 10 extending through the same at right angles to each other.
Upon one of the inner faces of each of the clamps 1 lugs or pins 11 are preferably formed and are provided with sharp points for being driven into the battens b, as hereinafter described.
The erection and removal of the centering shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is performed as follows :The four sides of the centering are formed by the lagging of the forms a being set in place against each other, as shown in Fig. 2, and are secured together by the bat-- tens 7), so that the sides of the centering are thus put in place, with the battens nailed together at the corners to hold the centering in place until the ties formed by the clamping devices are applied, and the successive ties formed by the clamps 1 and bolts 2 of said devices are connected together. One of the clamps 1 is then applied at each corner of the batten 7) and the pins 11 are driven into said batten by striking the side of the clamp carrying such pins to hold the clamp in place until the bolts are applied. The nuts 8' carried on the bolts 2 are located about equidistant from the enlarged portion 9 and at such a distance as to allow the nut on one end of its bolt to clear the enlarged end 4 of one of the clamps 1 while the nut on the other end of said bolt will clear the enlarged portion of the adjacent clamp and the threaded portions 8 on the bolts 2 will thus be enabled to slip into the slots 7 in the enlargements 4 of the clamps 1. After this is done all the clamps 1 are tightened up against the forms a by screwing up the bolts 2 between the ends a on the same through a wrench applied to the enlarged or nut portions 9 thereon or by a suitable instrument placed in the holes 10 in said portions, as may be desired, to turn said enlarged or nut portion, and as this is done the nuts 8 are drawn down into their respective seats 7 in the clamps 1, and the sides 3 and overlapping portions 7 are so formed that they keep the nut from turning and thereby form a threaded path for the bolts 2 in said nuts so held and permit the flanged enlargements or lugs 4c of the adjacent clamps l to be drawn together for tightening the clamping devices around the forms a and to secure the centering.
lVhen the centering is to be removed after the concrete for the column has set, all that is required is to unscrew all the bolts 2 slightly by means of a wrench or other instrument as herein before described, until the nuts 8 on all of said bolts have been screwed outward from their respective seats a sutlicient distance, so that they will clear the overlapping portions 7 on each end of the clamps 1 and then the bolts 2 may be lifted from the clamps 1 through the slots 7.
After the bolts 2 are removed the clamps 1 will then he held to the bat-tens 7) around the forms a only by the pins 11. and said clamps may then be easily removed from said battens by a slight blow of a hammer.
Fig. 5 shows another form of my improved clamping device in which the enlarged ends or lugs at of one end of the clamps 1 are offset from the plane of the lugs of the other ends, so that if the bolts 2 are long enough to reach to the corners of said clamps, the ends of said bolts will pass at right angles to each other when in position, and therefore will be prevented from striking one another while if the form shown in Fig. 1 is preferred other sets of bolts of different length may be used.
In Fig. 2 the forms a are for the formation of a square column, while the dotted lines indicate the formation of a round column and it will be evident that my improved clamping device may he used in the construction of a hexagon, octagon. or other shaped column by a slight modification of the forms.
It will also be seen that the bolts and clamps of my improved clamping device may be used in connection with the forming of large and small columns of various shapes, as well as for the forming of girders and other such forms in frame and other work and the device is conveniently adjustable for any desired range of structural size, while it will also enable cheap and convenient erection and removal of the centering or other framework and will involve no skilled labor in its application or removal.
It will also be seen that in the device, the clamps will be easily placed in position and separated, while the bolts of the device will enable the formation of the largest and smallest structures and will always be in line with each other, thereby eliminating any tendency of the clamps to tip.
Various modifications and changes in the design and construction of my improved clamping device for building columns and other like constructions may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the in vention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with the centering forms, of a clamping device consisting of angle clamps at the corners of such forms having the two sides of the same fitting against the sides of said forms, flanged ends on each of the sides of said clamps, each having a slot within the flange, a right and left hand threaded screwbolt fitting in alined slots in the flanged edges of two of said clamps and between said ends for connecting the clamps together and for tightening the same, nuts engaging with said bolts and withsaid clamps to hold the same in place and for adjusting said clamps by the movement of said bolts, and means for preventing the accidental displacement of said nuts while permitting the removal of said bolts.
2. The combination with the centering forms, of a clamping device consisting of angle clamps at the corners of such forms having the two sides of the same fitting against the sides of said forms, flanged ends on each of the sides of said clamps, each having a slot within the flange, a right and left hand threaded screw-bolt fitting in alined slots in the flanged ends of two of said clamps and between said ends for connecting the clamps together and for tightening the same, nuts on said bolts engaging with recesses formed on said clamps to hold the same in place and for adjusting said clamps by the movement of said bolts, and means for preventing the accidental displacement of said nuts while permitting the removal of said bolts.
3. The combination with the centering forms, of a clamping device consisting of angle clamps at the corners of such forms having the two sides of the same fitting against the sides of said forms, flanged ends on each of the sides of said clamps, each having a slot within the flange, a right and left hand threaded screw-bolt fitting in alined slots in the flanged ends of two of said clamps and between said ends for connecting the clamps together and for tightening the same, nuts on said bolts engaging with recesses formed on the side of said flanges to hold the same in place and for adjusting said clamps by the movement of said bolts, and means for preventing the accidental displacement of said nuts while permitting the removal of said bolts.
4. The combination with the centering forms, of a clamping device consisting of angle clamps at the corners of such forms having the two sides of the same fitting against the sides of said forms, flanged ends on each of the sides of said clamps, each having a slot within the flange, a right and left hand threaded screw-bolt fitting in alined slots in the flanged ends of two of said clamps and between said ends for connecting the clamps together and for tightening the same, said bolt having a wrenching portion thereon and between said flanged ends for turning the same, nuts on said bolts engaging with recesses formed on the side of said flanges to hold the same in place and for adjusting said clamps by the movement of said bolts, and means for preventing the accidental displacement of said nuts while permitting the removal of said bolts.
5. The combination with the centering forms, of a clamping device consisting of angle clamps at the corners of such forms having the two sides of the same fitting against the sides of said forms, flanged ends on each of the sides of said clamps, each having a slot within the flange, a right and left hand threaded screw-bolt fitting in alined slots in the flanged ends of two of said clamps and between said ends for connecting the clamps together and for tightening the same, said bolt having holes through the same and between said flanged ends for turning said bolt, nuts on said bolts engaging with recesses formed on the side of said flanges to hold the same in place and for adjusting said clamps by the movement of said bolts, and means for preventing the accidental displacement of said nuts while permitting the removal of said bolts.
6. The combination with the centering forms, of a clamping device consisting of angle clamps at the corners of such forms having the two sides of the same fitting against the sides of said forms, flanged ends on each of the sides of said clamps, each having a slot within the flange, a right and left hand threaded screw-bolt fitting in alined slots in the flanged ends of two of said clamps and between said ends for connecting the clamps together and for tightening the same, said bolt having a wrenching portion thereon between said flanged ends and provided with holes through the same for turning said bolt, nuts on said bolts engaging with recesses formed on the side of said flanges to hold the same in place and for adjusting said clamps by the movement of said bolts, and means for preventing the accidental displacement-of said nuts while permitting the removal of said bolts.
7. The combination with the centering forms having battens applied thereto, of a clamping device consisting of angle clamps at the corners of such forms having the two sides of the same fitting against the sides of said forms, flanged ends on each of the sides of said clamps, each having a slot within the flange, means fitting in alined slots in the flanged ends of two of said clamps and between said ends for connecting the ends together and for tightening the same, and means on the inner face of one side of said clamps and carried by the same for engaging with the battens to hold the clamp in place for assembling.
8. The combination with the centering forms having battens applied thereto, of a clamping device consisting of angle clamps at the corners of such forms having the two sides of the same fitting against the sides of said forms, flanged ends on each of the sides of said clamps, each having a slot within the flange, means fitting in alined slots in & 1,000,212
