CLAMPING DEVICE FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTIONS.
To all whom i 15 may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. TRIMBLE, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamping Devices for Building Constructions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a clamping device for building columns and other like constructions, and has special reference to such a device for use in concrete work.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and eflicient clamping de vice for this class of work which is adjustable for use in constructions of different shapes and sizes, will enable the rapid and easy assembling and removal of the same, and will avoid the loss of time and expense resulting from the separation or loss of the parts of the same.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my invention, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a portion of a column form showing my improved clamp applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 22 Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view partly in section of one of the clamps. Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view of the same. Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-section on the line 55 Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the clamping and adjusting bolt. Fig. 7 is a crosssection of the column form showing another form of the clamping device.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing, a represents the forms for forming a square column, which are generally composed of a lagging of boards and set vertically to form the centering, and between which the concrete is filled in to form the column. In this lagging the boards are set vertically and Specification of Letters I atent.

such lagging on each of its four sides is held together by battens Z) placed at suitable intervals, while each side of the centering is formed preferably before erection by nailing the battens to such boards in order to tie the latter together. The four sides of the centering forms a are held together by the angular clamps 1, each of which is at the corner of such form and extend along the same, so that a bolt 2 can be connected to and from clamp to clamp and thus form complete ties for inclosing such forms by thus being formed of four clamps and four bolts, while such a tie is shown at each batten Z) although it will be understood that only as many ties will be used, as required, and that the battens and ties will be spaced on the form as required according to the size and design of the structure.
Each of the clamps 1 consists of an angle plate having the two sides 8, which are preferably of channel shape, and terminate in the flanged enlargements or lugs 4 at the ends of the same, while the channel flanges 5 extend from such enlargements and are preferably enlarged at the corners of the plate, as at 6, to strengthen the same. ithin each of the enlarged ends 4 on the clamps 1 is the threaded hole 7 which extends longitudinally of such ends and clamps, and the threads in one of said end holes are formed in an opposite direction from those in the other end hole in order to provide for the right and left hand screw connection between each of the clamps, as hereinafter described.
The bolts 2 are each provided with a threaded portion 8 at each end of the same, with the threads of one end portion formed in an opposite direction from those on the other end portion for the right and left hand screw connection, by each of said bolts engaging with the threaded holes 7 in the enlarged ends 4 of opposite clamps 1 through said threaded portions 8. Preferably between the threaded portions 8 and centrally of the bolts 2 is the enlarged portion 9, which is preferably of nut shape, so as to provide for fiat sides thereon and is provided with two holes 10 extending through the same at right angles to each other.
The erection and removal of the centering shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is performed as follows The four sides of the centering is formed by the lagging of the forms a being set in place against each other, as shown in Fig. 2, and secured together by the battens b, so that the sides of the centering are thus put in place, with the battens nailed together at the corners to hold the centering in place until the ties formed by the clamping devices are applied, and the successive ties formed by the clamps 1 and bolts 2 of said devices applied. The four clamps 1 are connected together in sets of two by a bolt 2 between each pair of the same by their opposite ends 4, and on two of the four clamps in one set the other two bolts are carried by one of the threaded portions 8 thereon engaging with the threaded holes 7 in the enlarged ends 4: on the same opposite from the ends 4 carrying the bolt between the same, so that when the two connected clamps in the other set are placed around the forms a and each of the clamps are applied at the corners of said forms, the other threaded portions 8 on the bolts 2 of the unconnected cla-mp ends 1 will engage with the holes 7 in the free ends 4 of the connected clamps by being screwed into the same. After this is done all of the clamps 1 are tightened up against the forms a by screwing up the bolts 2 between the ends 4 on the same through a wrench applied to the nut portions 9 thereon or by a suitable instrument placed in the holes 10 in said portions, as may be desired, to turn said bolts and thereby clamp and secure the centering. When the centering is to be removed after the con crete for the column has been set, all that is required is to unscrew all the bolts 2 slightly to loosen the clamps, and then unscrew one of the portions 8 on two of the opposite bolts 2 from their clamping ends 4, so as to free or separate the clamps 1 from each other, which will allow all of the clamps to be freed from the forms a for removal and with two of them connected together in two sets of two each. The two sets of two clamps each when so removed have each pair in a set connected together by one of the bolts 2 between the ends 4: of the same, while one of said sets has a bolt 2 connected by one of its portions 8 within the opposite ends of its clamps, with the other portion 8 extending out therefrom so that both sets are then ready to be connected together for clamping, as above described, although if desired each of the two sets of clamps can be removed from the centering with a bolt 2 connected between each of the clamps forming a set and from the opposite ends of the clamps.
In Fig. 2 the forms a; are for the formation of a square column, while the dotted lines indicate the formation of a round column, by forms of that shape, and around which corner pieces are placed for the clamping devices. In Fig. 7, the forms 01 are for the formation of a hexagon column by forms of that shape, and around which corner pieces are placed for the clamping devices. If desired, as shown in Fig. 7, two ordinary screw bolts 2 can be used for connecting the flanged ends 4: of the clamps 1 together on opposite sides of the centering to permit of the rapid coupling and uncoupling of the device, and at the same time enable the other two bolts 2 between the clamps 1 to hold all the clamps together when removed.
It will thus be seen that the bolts and clamps of my improved clamping device may be used in connection with the forming of large and small columns and of various shapes, as well as for forming girders and other such forms in frame and other work and the device is conveniently adjustable for any desired range of structural size, while it will enable cheap and convenient erection and removal of the centering or other framework and will involve no skilled labor in its application or removal. It will also be seen that in the device, the clamps will carry the bolts for the same, which will overcome the necessity of separating these parts in erecting or removing the centering, so that the loss of time resulting from the separation and accidental misplacement of parts is thereby avoided, while the bolts of the device will enable the formation of the largest and smallest structures and will always be in line with each other thereby eliminating any tendency of the clamps for tipping. The device will also overcome the use of diii'erent size bolts for different size forms, which will thereby prevent the ends of the bolts from being in the way, and so enable the same clamps and bolts to be used for all structures.
Various modifications and changes in the design and construction of my improved clamping device for building columns and other like constructions may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1.
