Abstract

A process for the preparation of titanium carbide using SHS-process comprises the preliminary operations for preparation of exothermic mixture from initial powders of metallic titanium powder and nonmetallic powder of carbon soot in a form of furnace charge, loading of furnace charge to graphite container of reactor, heating of furnace charge to ignition temperature and burning of exothermic mixture in regime of self-spreading high temperature synthesis (SHS), cooling of reactor and unloading of synthesized material. Furnace charge is prepared in a form of press tailings using organic compound, which is burned, then obtained press tailing is compacted in a form of samples of fixed size, dried to constant mass. As container unpressurized graphite container is used. Dried compacted samples of furnace charge are placed to back filling of carbon powder (fine soot). Support with container is placed to the preliminary heated working zone of the heated furnace with air atmosphere. Container with loaded compacted samples of furnace charge is hold in heating furnace to the appearance of traces of intense gas release, cooled it to room temperature and samples of synthesized titanium carbide are unloaded.
